Last week I threw out over 30 pounds of meat from my freezer because of freezer burn (and being too old-that's my fault). I decided I should use a FoodSaver so I purchased one from Costco yesterday.
Now I'm second guessing my decision as the guidance recommends freezing meat before sealing. It feels like a lot of work when you add in sealing and cutting the bag to size before hand and then vacuuming and sealing afterwards. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
So, I guess I'd appreciate hearing what you use it for and what your experience has been with meats such as ground beef, chicken, bacon, etc. Do you feel it's worth the extra time and expense (FoodSaver bags verses Ziplock freezer storage bags)?
Thanks.

I freeze my meat/fish when I first come home from the store and have never had any issues. Recently cooked a piece of trout that had been in the freezer over 6 months and it still looked/tasted like I had just brought it in from the grocery store.
It definitely keeps food longer and in better condition than ziploc bags do, especially long term. I debated on getting one for nearly 3 years and after I did I wondered why on earth I hesitated. Definitely worth the cost to me. The one thing I will note is that I have better luck with the premade bags than I do with the cut to size rolls. Not sure what the issue is but I seem to get a better seal from the premade bags so that's all I buy now.

I don't use it on meat so much anymore. I'm plant based heavy. However, I do use it to freeze leftovers. I have some souper cubes and once whatever I am freezing is done, I will use the vac sealer. I keep it all in chest freezer. They have never tasted or looked off.

I also vacuum seal the meats when I get home from the store - I never freeze the meat first.
I’ll typically trim the meat down to how I’ll be preparing it. Chicken breasts are trimmed down to cutlets, steak for tidbits are cut into bite sized pieces, other things are frozen into portions. I can store more in my freezer this way plus it defrosts faster and there’s flexibility if we aren’t eating together.
I’ve cooked months old meat that tasted just fine.
It’s the one appliance I have replaced immediately when it broke.

I use one for meat and seafood purchased at Costco. I’ve never pre-frozen my meat before vacuum sealing it.

I use mine often it's well worth it. I never freeze my meat before I seal it. Everywhere now and then I'll have a bag that lets loose and doesn't maintain its seal but that's not very often. It definitely does help with the quality and longevity of the meat.

I do. I will flash freeze stuff that is juicy but don’t freeze my meats first. If you use pretty standard amount when freezing you can also get premade bags (all you have to do is seal the top) but they are more expensive and probably more waste - but sometimes it is just more convenient.
I also often will break down large packages of pre frozen foods that come in just a box and regular plastic bag when I open them for portions just my size. Then they don’t get all that ice build up if I don’t quickly use the box of stuff.
I also will often freeze / vacuum seal my left overs for a day when I just want to grab something quick and microwave it. If it is a casserole or something I just put it in the freezer for a few hours and then pop it out of the dish and just vacuum seal it with no dish. I love mine and doesn’t seem like too much effort. But I hate freezer burned food and can taste it immediately. I also hate when food gets all that ice build up on it - so it is worth it for me.

I vacuum seal a lot of things, meats and beyond.
For meats, I prefer precut bags. I use gallon for wings and quart for chicken breasts, chicken tenders, thing cut breasts, and 1 pound of ground turkey.
I make an assembly line after laying down some saran wrap and paper towel on my counter.
I have the bags pre labeled with a sharpie (date, store I bought from, how much), and opened. I then have my meat to the left of those bags. I glove up and add the meat to the bags.
I then take off my gloves and with paper towel I have already in small sections, wipe the tops of the bags inside and out to remove any fluid.
Then I start to vacuum and seal. Once done, I add the bags to my freezer.
For ground turkey meat, once vacuumed and sealed, I smoosh the meat into the entire bag area to be thin as possible. This helps with storage and defrosting.
I also vacuum seal:
Souper Cube cubes of stock, soups, rice, left overs, ground meat
Shredded chicken
Flash frozen fruits like blackberries, blueberries, cranberries
Flash frozen fresh vegetables like green beans, onion, bell pepper.
I also pre make turkey patties and seal those as well. Makes burger night so super fast.
ETA: you seal fresh meat. You do not freeze it then seal.

Fo bacon, roll it on strips of parchment, add to the bag, vacuum, and seal. I again use the zip ones as it is easy to reseal after I grab out what I need. Having it in strips is hard as they stuck together.

I have had 3 broken seals since 2019 when I got my Food saver.
The best trick to prevent that is to clean where you will seal the bag. That extra liquid can cause the seal to not be good.

I often will get some of the bags/rolls here if there are not sales or I am looking for a bunch of specific sizes and not a variety pack. Lems- vacuum seal products
ETA - from your price at Amazon, Lems is significantly more expensive. So I think that price that you gave for Amazon is pretty good!

It definitely keeps food longer and in better condition than ziploc bags do, especially long term. Agreed. I find I'm using it more frequently even to repackage frozen foods for longer term storage. I never pre-freeze meats before sealing them. In fact, I think this is the first I've even heard of it.

I do not personally use it, no. It just seems like too much effort. However! My mom's husband is an avid vacuum sealer. So when I go to Costco I drop my meat off with him, tell him the portion sizes I want and he vacuum seals it for me. It really does keep the meat a higher quality in the freezer. Saying that, I still eat freezer burned meat. There isn't actually anything wrong with it. I will cut off the worst parts and put the rest in crock pot meals or things where the texture doesn't matter too much.
ETA: He also vacuum seals things from the garden. Last year they grew corn, so the corn got parboiled and then frozen. We've done snap peas, bell peppers, diced tomatoes. Veggies work out really well and then you have your garden fresh produce throughout the year. He does not freeze things before using the vacuum sealer. Everything goes in fresh, gets sealed, then frozen.

I'm encouraged to read so many are not prefreezing their meat before vacuum sealing.
For those that are using the premade bags, how much per bag is a good price? I think the most common size I will use is quart. I see a box of 120 on Amazon for $29.99 or $.25 each (brown box but says FoodSaver brand) but many others I've looked at are $.50 to almost a $1 each. When I buy a 6 pound pack of ground beef at Costco, I usually break it down into five 8 ounce bags, two 12 ounce bags and two 1 pound bags so I go through my ziplocks quickly.

We have one and honestly we don’t use it much. About the only time we get meat that isn’t already frozen is when we run out of beef from the butcher and need to grab something from Costco Business Center. We’ll get a big hunk of meat and cut it up into steaks or chops and package them in ziplock freezer bags in packs of 2-3 depending on how big they are. ETA: we never freeze the meat first before we bag it. I do that with fruit, shredded cheese or scooped balls of cookie dough though. I’ll freeze the stuff loose on a sheet pan and once it’s frozen solid I’ll bag them up for longer term freezing. That way it doesn’t freeze into a solid clump and I can take out only as much as I want without having to thaw the whole bag.
I bought a box with two big rolls of bags for the food saver from Costco a few years ago and I doubt we’ll use them up in my lifetime. I either end up making the bag too big or too small 90% of the time.

I get the kit from Costco. You get 36 quart bags that are premade. I do keep and use the rolls. I have premade my own with the rolls, making sure they are sealed well at the bottom. To me it's the best deal. But I have bought the zipper quarts on sale at Amazon for $6.99 for 18 bags.

Years ago I started a thread like this saying I was thinking of getting a FoodSaver. elaine messaged me and said she just bought a new one and would send me the old one. It is a workhorse and still going strong. One thing I do that no one has mentioned is use it for packing for long trips (14-19 days.) I make 3-4 day bundles of underwear and socks. It saves room in the suitcase and, the bundles are so hard, they can be used as a weapon if someone breaks into your hotel room.

I bought one several years ago after a thread here. I use it to freeze meat all of the time. Mine has not been working quite right for awhile (not sealing the best all of the time and now when I vacuum/seal it never goes to seal so I have to stop it then start again just to seal it. I bought a new one from Sam's Club but for what ever reason I keep thinking the old one will start working again and haven't opened the new one yet.

I’ve had a food saver since 2016 and it is probably my third most used kitchen appliance behind my rice cooker and microwave. It also is great for sealing food before I put it into the water while using my sous vide.

I’ve had a FoodSaver since they first came out over 30 yrs ago. The only things I freeze first are soups and my spaghetti sauce. Those I just drop in a pot of boiling water when I’m ready to use. I do wrap my ground beef first in some plastic wrap so the juices don’t squirt out along with the air. Wouldn’t be without one.

We use the food saver from Costco (DH just bought the one on sale because our old one died last week) and we do not freeze the meats first. Make the "bag", label the bag (VERY important- no mystery stuff in the freezer please!), portion out the meat, vacuum seal it up, into the freezer it goes.
Sometimes DH will take it from the freezer straight into the sous vide. It's all sealed so no water gets in.

I never freeze the meat first. I use it a lot and it has saved me a lot of money. Now I will freeze liquids first like leftover soup or chicken stock. I freeze them in ice cube trays because sometimes you just need a little bit like in a stirfry

I never heard of freezing the meat first. I've had mine for 18 years and used it for every meat that has been put in the freezer during that time. It is the main thing I use it for. I still love it - one of the best purchases I ever made.

I answered the poll that I don't have one and don't have a need for one. But in true Two Peas fashion, you all are making me think I need one. I buy my meat at Costco and use the Glad press and seal wrap or freezer ziplock bags. If I seal it good, the meat doesn't get freezer burn. But I wouldn't mind having a Food Saver for frozen goods like vegetables or fruit for my smoothies.

Love ours and like everyone else I don't pre-freeze, just package things out when I get home from the store.
I love it, and I'm PICKY about frozen meat. To this day I can still taste the rubbery brisket my mom (who was an excellent cook) would make by parceling out the cooked portions into metal cake pans and then putting them into the freezer, Foil optional. We buy a lot of our meat from Costco and parcel it out as it's cheaper. This has worked great.
FYI, here we have a nature center that will take donations of freezer burned meat. It's home to several carnivores who don't care that it's burned. From time to time we've done a clean out and donated meat to them that we won't eat but their (residents) will.
