I just watched an episode of HH International about a family moving from San Diego to Germany (for father's job).
Before setting out, the agent asked the parents, "Would you like to go pick up the kids so they can look at houses?"
Without missing a beat, the father laughs and says NO! The mother says, "This family is not a democracy. They don't get a vote."
HA! I loved it! Given how many people on HH and HHI give their dogs and kids decision-making power in their new home choice, I thought that was priceless.
Yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with these shows. One of my kids is kind of hooked, too. I said, "Just promise me when you're a first-time buyer, you won't reject a home because it has the wrong kind of kitchen backsplash."
What have you heard on HH or HHI that made you laugh out loud?

Just the 'hunters' inability to see what's easily changed, or overlooking what, to me, matters most.

DH and I will always remember the "Jackson" episode. This young couple with a 2yr old were looking at homes and the parents kept saying things like "Jackson wouldn't like this....Jackson would love this" ALL they kept saying was Jackson!!!!! Drove us crazy! Now when we hear that name we cringe lol (no offense to any Jackson peas here lol!)
My sister would be great on there. She is in mid 20s and just told me she isn't picky on buying a home then listed her top 75 requirements (very detailed!!) for her home she and her DH are wanting. They said they won't settle either lol

The only choices our girls got to make when we built our home was what bedroom each of them wanted.

All that raving about crown molding makes me laugh. Crown molding is cheap, cheap, cheap to put up and covers an often faulty line of demarcation between wall and ceiling.

I like those parents! Ours was never a democracy, either. When they pay the mortgage, they get a say. The one I'm still scratching my head over is the woman who chose her house based on how good it was for her pet turtle.

You've never heard that before? My parents and grandparents used it all the time. Along with "Democracy begins outside the front door."

I saw one commercial for a HGTV show where one woman said "I will have a panic attack if I see brass lights in the house." Seriously!?

The ones that crack me up are when it is all about the dogs. Like they really care how nice the house is. Also I get that you may need a yard (my dog likes his) but because it isn't a full acre for a teeny dog?!
My other favorite is not getting a house with stairs because your infant baby doesn't know how to use them (this was a flight of 4 stairs, not the scary floating kind).

She better hold on to something then because brass is coming back, lol. It's not the shiny stuff of the 80s and 90s, but it is the aged, patinaed (sp?) antique looking stuff.

I also love the ones where they comment on how comfortable the furniture is --- umm, generally you don't get the bed or couch when you buy the house unless you buy it furnished!

Love those parents!
I don't watch very often, but usually when the super picky, unsatisfied types start talking about "outdated" and "must be removed and new installed" before they could even consider it, I'm all over it- whatever it is! Hey, I'll come get it when you take it out! Looks really good to me! I'm just not trendy.....or rich!

Awesome!
I threatened my boys with leaving them at grandmas if they screwed around while we were house hunting.
They did ok. They didn't get a vote...but we did consider their wishes.
There have been several episodes where I have to wonder what a poor guys sees in his very young, super-demanding, unable to give, new wife. Why would that be attractive?

My 25 yo ds is shopping for his first home - thankfully neither he (nor his gf, who gets a vote, but ds is buying on his own), have any ridiculous requirements. He wants afforable, 3 bed, 2 bath, newish, and in a decent neighborhood

I wouldn't have a panic attack seeing it, but I HATE anything brass, antiqued or not. If it's coming back into style, I will be the odd man out.

We say a version of that!
But I get what you mean. As much as I love my kids, they only get to chose bedrooms. Maybe they could participate in some discussions- like bigger yard vs pool -but in no way would they get to make a final choice. And I think they understand it.

It always seems like couples are so shocked that the house has a kitchen. For ex., the realtor will say, "if we go through this door you will see the kitchen". The couple seems so surpised that there is a kitchen. Substitute any room for kitchen. I hope I am making some sense! I really don't know how to explain it.
And I also hate when they seem to turn down the house otherwise perfect because one room is painted a color they don't like. But they love everything else about it.

This show would make an excellent drinking game. Sometimes if someone has a dog or little child, it is the ONLY thing they talk about, "Oh, Jeffers would like this back yard. Jeffers could practice his political speeches in this office. I can just see Jeffers coming down the stairs for breakfast every morning." Honestly, I want to strangle Jeffers before they show the second house. Whew, thank for letting me get that off of my chest. I have been watching too much HGTV this break.

The one I'm still scratching my head over is the woman who chose her house based on how good it was for her pet turtle. That has got to be the winner. I work with a man who has a 35 year old turtle. It has its own bedroom. He thinks he understands women because his turtle is female. I NEED to see that episode.

^^^ he thinks he understands women, but his turtle has an actual BEDroom in his house?!? He's single-- am I right???
ETA I never responded to the original post: (disclaimer: we don't have kids)
I don't understand how parents think their kids can't POSSIBLY share a bedroom; like it will scar them for life, or something. Especially if they're moving from the US to Europe where the houses are a lot smaller, they still expect to get a 4-5 bedroom house for a reasonable amount of money.
It also always annoys me when people say 'oh, we can't have stairs (or whatever) because it's dangerous for the kids... like they can't possibly teach their kids to NOT do whatever it is, or put up a baby gate. I just watched one where the lady was INSISTENT that they remove a fireplace in what was going to be the kids' playroom (while the kids were small), even after the contractor told her they could shut off the gas so there would be NO way the kids could POSSIBLY start a fire. The only reason she agreed to leaving it was because of how much it would cost to remove it. People don't ever seem to think about resale value.

Drove us crazy! Now when we hear that name we cringe lol (no offense to any Jackson peas here lol!) Omg this episode made me nuts too! i winced every time they said his name like they were searching for a home for the Crown Prince of Egypt. Gahhhhh.... when my parents bought our house, they didn't consult me, my brother and sister. One day we were at the old house, the next, we were at the new house. No one asked if we would like our rooms or the backyard. They just drove up to it and said "we are here. Now put your stuff away." Lol.

That turtle episode was crazy. What killed me is the lady was married and he went along with it.
When I bought my first house as a single mom, the only choice DS got was when I purchased. I had a house I wanted but it would have required him to move and change school districts mid school year. I told him that i would wait until school was out if he didn't want to do that. I didn't HAVE to buy and move at that particular time and the house I found was something I could have bought in the same neighborhood a few months later. It was a new neighborhood being built.
When DH and I were house hunting, the dogs were taken into account but we didn't bring them to the house to check it out and get their approval. LOL We did bring them to the house we were in now while it was being built. Not that we had to but we would load them in the car and let them come with us. Also, Bud was still alive and he was blind. It helped him start finding his way around before we actually moved. I wanted to make the transition as easy as possible for him.
