Catastrophic flooding in central Texas

Just saw a post on Facebook that two of the Mystic campers have been found and did not make it. Their family members/friends had shared the news. So afraid of what additional news the day will bring.

As I mentioned, my source was Facebook. Because several of the girls were from my area, this is pretty much all I am seeing on Facebook and Instagram this weekend.

Also the man who owned the camp and at least one of the counselors died trying to save the campers. 

There are so many adults and children still missing and those who are confirmed dead all along the river. Many from an RV park. Last story I saw said 27 dead- 18 adults and 9 children. Of those, 6 adults and 1 child remain unidentified. 

There is a family who used to live in my area that were there. Their 8-year-old daughter was at camp and was found safe. Unconfirmed reports that the dad's body had been recovered. Mom and their two young sons are still missing. 

So many heartbreaking stories and more to come, I'm sure. It is such a beautiful area. There are no words for the devastation.  

***correcting myself that the counselor who died was a camp director from another camp in the area that was not in session during the floods. 

There will be another news conference at 2:00pm CT.

At the last one the officials are not giving out information on names, families etc. but families can talk about what ever they choose.

One comment made my catch my breath. They said that there are not a lot of places along the river where people could be. They are searching trees etc. But when he stated that they had 30 miles of river to search until the outlet.....

Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice also said during the press conference that the storm "dumped more rain than what was forecasted" into two forks of the Guadalupe River.

Kerr County judge Rob Kelly told CBS News: "We had no reason to believe that this was gonna be anything like what's happened here. None whatsoever."

Since January, the NWS—a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—has reduced its workforce by nearly 600 people as a direct result of staffing cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, as part of Trump's mission to eviscerate numerous federal agencies.

This policy is in line with Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation-led blueprint for a far-right overhaul of the federal government that calls for "dismantling" NOAA. Trump has also called for the elimination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, arguing that states should shoulder most of the burden of extreme weather preparation and response. Shutting down FEMA would require an act of Congress.

Many of the fired NWS staffers were specialized climate scientists and weather forecasters. At the time of the firings, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee, was among those who warned of the cuts' deadly consequences.

"People nationwide depend on NOAA for free, accurate forecasts, severe weather alerts, and emergency information," Huffman said. "Purging the government of scientists, experts, and career civil servants and slashing fundamental programs will cost lives."

Now, the Daily Beast is reporting that "officials in Texas are casting blame on the National Weather Service (NWS) for failing to forecast catastrophic flooding that has killed" dozens of people, including nine kids, according to new reports.

According to the Daily Beast:

"NWS was among the government agencies targeted by the Trump administration in its effort to gut the federal bureaucracy, losing approximately 600 staffers. After the cuts, the agency—which was already understaffed—began to prepare to offer 'degraded' forecasting services, facing 'severe shortages' of meteorologists, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times in April."'

The outlet goes on to quote Texas Emergency Management Chief W. Nim Kidd, who pointed to bad data.

"The original forecast that we received Wednesday from the National Weather Service predicted 3-6 inches of rain in the Concho Valley and 4-8 inches in the Hill Country," according to the chief. "The amount of rain that fell at this specific location was never in any of those forecasts.”

Others have noticed the connection between the Trump administration's cost-cutting efforts and the Texas tragedy, as well.

Former GOP lawmaker Adam Kinzinger, a frequent target of Trump, had this to say Saturday:

"Regarding the flooding: GOP doesn’t want to fund the programs that predict these things, but they still want to blame the federal government for not predicting this."

Pfluger: Camille, Vivian and I are now reunited with Caroline and Juliana who were evacuated from Camp Mystic. The last day has brought unimaginable grief to many families and we mourn with them as well as holding out hope for survivors.
