Ashley, I was reading on it. It appears if the speech incites an actual act of violence, otherwise they can say what they wish, outlandish or not. Lawyer peas, is this correct?

Ashley, we have particular hate speech laws that the US does not. I know our hate laws are different, but I thought the US has some? No? Or do you have no laws against hate speech in the US at all? Ashley, as long as the speech doesn't promote violence or cause danger, it's protected.

Disgusting. They are likely in your town because it isn't diverse...it's easy to be a jerk when there isn't anyone to fight back. they are vile cowards. I just don't understand hatred. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) This. They are vile and disgusting. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Born and raised in Alabama and I really don't know anything about the KKK. However, I am curious, have they always been violent? I know they assemble and have meetings and such, but do they openly commit acts of violence? To me, they are all idiots. And it makes me sad to think that my children live in a world where these people still exist.

My town and one town over found recruitment letters like that under rocks at the end of driveways and on porches last summer or the one before. I know I can just throw it away- but you can't unsee that stuff, you can't forget those people were near your home. The idea that someone is walking the streets of my town, spreading that brand of hate, thinking anyone is of like mind, disgusts me. It feels like a violation. I don't want any part of it. I don't want them near my home.

Spiffie, to my knowledge they haven't been violent in a long time but I could be wrong. I admit to being a bit of a pessimist but I don't see groups like this completely going away nor the associated hate as there will always be hateful people in the world and they will teach it to the next generation.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with scrapqueen01. I think things have gotten better, but I don't think we will ever see a day without somebody hating somebody. It just seems to be the way too many people are made. I think all we can do is try our best not to contribute to it, and teach our children better.

We have a little market in our town and it was hopping with the holiday yesterday, we're a tourist area so we get a lot of through traffic, everyone who is camping comes here to grab food/firewood/etc. We've been hearing stirrings that the KKK is trying to recruit around here for a couple of weeks now. In May in the next town over two men in a truck shot a black child with an airsoft gun as he was riding his bike down the street and yelled KKK out the window. link we were pissed but thought it was just trashy rednecks, and it well could've been. But yesterday it went a step further and honestly I have no idea what to do about it. Talking to the neighbors we feel disgusted, violated, scared and angry beyond measure. This trash has NO business in our town, county law enforcement can't do anything until they are caught breaking laws and quite honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the village law enforcement signed up- I don't trust them further than I can throw them and i'll be the first to say I can't even pick them up. They went through and papered the cars at the little market we've got-- probably 40 or so cars yesterday. They were quick about it as we were only in the store for about 10 minutes or so and everything was normal when we walked out but now I can't stop wondering who is behind this. If there are locals participating I want to know who it is, I don't want this to escalate, the idea of them even being near just makes me want to vomit. What can we do? Honestly I don't know why they're wasting their time here. There isn't diversity here. My boys go to school with TWO children that aren't white. Two. It's so boring :/ Sitting back and waiting for something to happen seems so wrong yet I really don't know what should or can be done. This just isnt' something I ever thought i'd see on my vehicle. What you've said is probably why they are trying. Diversity is minimal. It's a great place to go about spreading misinformation and instill their brand of fear in people that don't know beyond their own community. The less diversity, the easier it is for them to operate. Hopefully, this is the last you will hear of them.

As much as we progress there's always those factions that remain like a cancer in our society. A Neo-Nazi was actually voted into EU Parliament this year. Where I'm at (Germany) the NPD/Neo-Nazis regularly schedule protests. What's awesome is when they schedule a protest there are always an oppositional group protesting against the Nazi protesters.

I would have thought most propaganda coming from the KKK would not be permitted under hate speech laws? Ashley, we have particular hate speech laws that the US does not. JBeans or Ashley, can you help me out by reminding me what our laws are re: hate speech?

Steph, are you still in Ohio? Ohio has always been a hotbed of KKK fanatics. When I was in grad school Ohio State in the late 80s-90, I had KKK stickers stuck to the back window of the shell on my pickup truck. At least you just had a flyer and didn't have to scrape it off!
The final straw for me was when during spring break of 1990, while I was visiting my boyfriend in California, someone came by and wrote KKK in the side of my truck in some type of acid while it was parked outside my house. Since I am Jewish, the police treated it as a hate crime. At that point I didn't have any more classes to take and was just writing my dissertation, so I packed up and moved in with boyfriend in California and finished writing it out there.
The KKK was one of the worst things about living in Ohio, for me.

I would send an email to the Southern Poverty Law Center They track and document hate groups and crimes around the country. They might be interested in seeing your flyers.

When I was in grad school Ohio State in the late 80s-90, I had KKK stickers stuck to the back window of the shell on my pickup truck. This is interesting. I was in college in southern OH during those same years, and I remember the KKK holding some type of rally in our small college town. It was a big deal at the time, and the concensus was that everyone should stay out of the uptown area until after their appearance. I can't remember if they showed up or not. Again, though, I had no idea that the KKK had a big (or any) presence in OH at the time. Hearing your story helps put that into perspective.

I think the best thing is to throw the flyer away and ignore them. They are obviously looking for a reaction.

Use the experience as a positive experience to educate your children about what's out there and discuss diversity.

It is horrible. Unfortunately it's not the first time in the last year that they've recruited in Southern Ohio (see article). I think the best thing you can do is not give them the attention they seek and to educate your children and the people you come in contact with to love and treat everyone as they wish to be treated. I would also send those flyers to the Southern Poverty Law Center. KKK recruitment in Hillsboro, OH

Oh, Sunny Smile, they are SO still here. We had one way up in the hiarchy living in our little town until recently. And our town is split fairly evenly along black white lines. Back in the 80's while living in NC we regularly saw signs stuck along the side of the roads proclaiming "Klan meeting tonight". Scared me silly seeing those signs.

I'm not sure the lack of diversity is what draws them to a town - our area is fairly diverse and they have still shown up looking to recruit. The first time they staged a rally everyone basically ignored them - the second time, the local ministers got together and planned a gospel concert right across the street from the klan meeting. Once they realized their speeches were being completely drowned out by the music, they slunk away. I don't think they have been back since. I'm sure there are a few members around, but there doesn't seem to be any organized activity locally.
I lived in the South in the segregation days and they were very violent at that time, sometimes with the complicity or tacit approval of law enforcement or local government. They were not as openly violent as the original KKK (the post Civil War group), but there were lynchings, fires, bombings and many other acts of violence attributed to KKK groups and individuals affiliated with them. The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham is probably the most familiar to anyone from Alabama - all the bombers had ties to the Klan. Now, I think they use fear, intimidation and the threat of violence, and while the potential for violence is always there, they are more likely to try to manipulate the media or the voting process.
