The "Rules"
You are only required to have two things for these challenges. 1) a camera of any kind. "The best camera is the one that's with you" (Chase Jarvis). It can be a cell phone, point & shoot, ancient bellow style, pinhole, holga, large format, medium format, slr, dslr.... use the one you have. 2) a place to share your photo. Fairy Pod Mother has started a Flikr page specifically for the PeaRefugees. But if you don't want to go that route you can set up a blog, share a link from photobucket, or whatever works for you.
There will be no critics in the challenge threads. If you want to ask for advice please start a new thread. That way the challenge threads stay non threatening and don't get too convoluted. Plus, by starting a new thread there will be even more threads to read on this board (yippee!)
You are not committing to doing every challenge. If life gets busy, then life gets busy. You will be welcomed back with open shutters (ahem, arms) whenever you are ready to return. You can skip a month's challenge then return to it later or just skip it completely. I tried to keep things so they aren't extremely tied to seasons so those who live in different climates aren't closed out. However, I'm not sure I succeeded completely. So if one seems impossible try it in a different season.
Purpose
The challenges are very ambiguous by design. The purpose of the challenges is to get participants to think about the world around them. To pay attention to things that might have gone unnoticed. And to get the camera out of the bag. The ambiguity means each of us can interpret the challenge from our frame of reference. There is nothing to get wrong!
Format
As I listed each month I also listed something I associate with that month. Often it is a holiday but it can be a nursery rhyme, movie title, poetry line. That association is the "inspiration" Each month has an "inspiration", two adjectives, a verb, a noun and a color that are loosely related. You are welcome to make substitutions if you have different associations. Above all this is about having fun with your camera!!
