One for 'resolve'. Last spring I won a lottery bingo game at work and bought a second hand Canon Speedlite 550EX. I still have not used it. I resolve this year to do some reading, and to actually put it on my camera and try to learn flash photography. You'll be rocking the flash in no time! Check out The Strobist for some great tutorials related to flash usage.

Scrappinsami, I am not a huge lover of winter myself, I do not ski or skate or snowmobile, but I cannot imagine living where there are not the four seasons. Winter has a special kind of beauty (though I wished the duration were shorter!). And it is fun to wear warm, cozy clothes and sit by a wood burning fire. My best friend used to live here but moved to California and loves it, and she doesn't miss the winters at all, lol! Definitely only one season in Hawaii, after moving from Washington state, so I know what you mean.

I don't think this photo fits any of the categories, but indoor sports photographing has been challenging for me. So much that I posted on the old board nearly a year ago seeking some help and Volt, you were among the ladies who responded and it helped me so much. Since then my camera broke and I did upgrade and have been struggling with more buttons, but I got some great shots this weekend and this was in manual. This is the first competition that I trusted myself to use manual. Anyway, thanks for letting me share Maybe this does fit the resolve category. Lol

I've been a little reluctant to share this because it doesn't fit any of the challenge, except that it WAS taken in January. We (my husband and I) are calling this our "try something new" challenge. In December, we decided to rent a lens that was totally "new" to us. We chose the Lomography Petzval lens. This lens is a reproduction of a 19th century portrait lens, except is has been re-manufactured to work on Canon or Nikon dSLR's. What makes the lens unusual from other modern day dSLR lens is that instead of an internal electronically controlled aperture, the Petzval uses a series of removable plates (called Waterhouse stops), each with a smaller diameter circle, to cut down the light that passes through to the sensor. The rental lens also came with 3 noncircular apertures. Of course, once we received the lens (there was quite a waiting list!), the weather turned bitter cold - as in sub-zero, freezing cold - so outdoor photography was, well out. So off we went to the only place we could think of - our local indoor Botanical Gardens on the last day of the Christmas Holiday display. Which was a pretty boring display, except for the abundance of poinsettia plants and mini-lights. So that became our photography "subjects" - plants and lights. LOL The "stars" you see in this picture do not exist in real life. They were actually normal shaped clear Christmas mini-lights. The stars were not "created" in photoshop or by using a star lens filter. They are in fact, the result of the Petzval lens with a star-shaped aperture. When the picture is enlarged on a computer screen, some of the background bokeh is also "star-shaped". It was a fun (and challenging) lens to play with, but limited in it's use, so we'll never buy one.

Final edition, nice action shot. It makes my stomach lurch though to imagine being so high up in the air!
Restless Spirit, I had not heard of that. What an interesting effect.

finaledition - that's a great shot! The look on the flyers face it too awesome.
@restless Spirit - I wish I lived in an area where I could rent lens. I'm too rural for that and I think it would be fun to try didn't ones out.
pamp - I like your picture especially the water droplets that you were able to capture. Good job!

Did you know they can be rented online, mailed to you and you mail them back?

The ones I have found you have to be local. lensrental.com rentglass.com will ship most of their lenses. They do have some of the super longs that they won't ship due to the cost associated with shipping them. You have to go to Overland Park Kansas to pick up/return.

Adjective 2: fresh
When I hear the word "fresh" I think of fresh air and for me that means Yosemite. I live in a valley that is pretty polluted so to get fresh air I just drive a few hours to Yosemite and I get to breath free for a day.
What a beautiful picture!
