Porto is supposed to be lovely but will certainly be busy and touristy, at this time of year

I'd go for either. Just make sure that you can find a place to stay before you book the flight. July and August are very popular times for vacations in Europe. VERY popular.
When we lived in Belgium, we used to start making weekend plans Wednesday or Thursday, and then look for cheap flights/accommodations. Its a good way to get some great deals (and travels!) at great prices. The Daily Drop site is a good resource for that.

If you’d been able to meet him in Glasgow, I would have taken you both for a drink! 😁

Looks like it's Shannon, Ireland (with rental car to drive around) leaving on Tuesday.
Naples was cheap for me, spendy for him. Same with Porto.
I can fly into Shannon, rent a car, and airbnbs for way less than Naples or Porto. He has to deal with me driving on the left hand side (he yelled at me when I was driving in the UK last year).

It's crazy that I only thought do this last Thursday. I was ready to leave on Friday (teacher summer break). No preplanning. No real research. LOL, husband is doing to most of the logistics research (flight, rental car). ChatGPT is doing my planning.
I did do a trip on the spur of the moment to see him in April in Paris. THAT was crazy. Booked Friday, flight on Monday, but Paris doesn't need much preplanning. So not me.

I can't wait to hear how much fun you and your DS had on your spontaneous trip! What a great opportunity.

So I'm sitting in the hotel in Ennis waiting to go pick up my son (Gorgeouskid) at 12:10am. I've not slept in 28 hours, save 10-20 minutes a couple of times. I'm not a good traveler that way.
We head up the coast through Doolin and the Burren to Galway. There's an art festival in Galway.
Son has been a rockstar in planning a loose itinerary. Lots of driving though.

Trip was awesome save the rural driving (which was 90% of the driving). Driving was awful for me (DS isn't old enough to drive a rental car). We had a lot of awesome experiences. Innish through Lahinch to the Burren to Galway. Innis Mohr. Clonakilty/Cork. Killarney. Ring of Kerry (AWFUL tiny rural roads 1/10 do not recommend, but the non-driving parts were awesome). Several beaches.
Many pubs. Much Guinness and Beamish for him (I'm not a beer drinker at all, plus I was driving). Watched All Ireland rugby final at pub in Cork (Ireland in Galway victory) and Gaelic Football final in Killaryney (Co. Kerry victory- was insane!)
I'm thankful that I had this time with my Los Angeles lonely son.
He's coming home (rather unexpectedly September 8) for a time while he waits for his (UK) degree to be posted and he can start to apply for UK/Ireland jobs.

We were able to partake! Not in all the things that were able, but certainly the food and in the main square.

I am so so glad to hear you had a wonderful trip. Time spent with your son, in an incredible place, and seeing incredible things…how can you not just love that. I had to chuckle at the rural driving part, though. Many people (me 😆 ) are much more confident with rural driving and that would be a win or 10/10 for me. The worst part of driving on the left (IMO) is muscle memory kicking in and drifting back to the right. At least rural I got a chance if the happens. 😉. Just out of curiosity what was it about the driving that you didn’t like. Narrow roads? Dirt? Animal obstacles?
