My son has been in the UK since August. I saw him in Paris in April, Dublin in December and here in CA in June for a school trip, so it's not like I haven't seen him.
He called me this morning (he never calls me, but his dad was busy). He's sad and lonely. His girlfriend unexpectedly had to return to Canada for a family emergency and it's not likely she will return to the UK (same university, but both programs are winding down).
I got a hair up my butt tonight and suggested to my husband I fly to the UK tomorrow or Friday. (Teacher, off for summer break.) So, I might be flying to the UK tomorrow. More likely Friday if I do it at all.
So, crazy?

Nope, definitely not crazy! A friend of mine (who is originally from the UK) once flew from Australia to the UK to surprise her mum for Mother's Day. She also flew to the UK this year to watch Liverpool's last match of the season. I think a sad and lonely son is the most perfectly un-crazy reason to jump on a plane!

Nope, not crazy. Do it! This is a good reason why it's smart to keep an up-to-date passport... so we can do last minute trips just like this.

I love a last-minute adventure! It's something you'll both remember forever.
I'd take every opportunity to hang with your boy with just the two of you, especially since it sounds like there's a serious girl in his life!

Crazy in all the best ways!
Sometimes you just have to be spontaneous, and do crazy things, like >> booking a last minute flight and going for an unexpected visit. This is how some of the best memories are made.
Enjoy your trip!

Make it happen. You will never regret going but you would always regret not going.

Just make sure you get your UK visa before buying your airline ticket. If there is no hang up in your application you should get in within an hour, but it can take up to three days.

Nope, definitely not crazy! I think a sad and lonely son is the most perfectly un-crazy reason to jump on a plane! Don’t think about it - just do it! I would do it for my son - he is in Belgium and I’m in Australia

So he's going to Glasgow for the weekend, so I won't be flying out today or tomorrow. My buddy ChatGPT says Krakow is the likely best destination for us. He wants somewhere non touristy. He's been everywhere I've not been. Rome is the cheapest for me, but terrible this time of year. He's already been there but I have not.
He's been to Poland, but not Krakow. Flight isn't terribly expensive for me. So maybe? Another choice is Porto, Portugal.

Either of those destinations should be good, my choice would be Porto - let us know what you decide

Porto is supposed to be lovely! A radio guy from here just retired & moved there. He talked a lot about what he liked about the city. Made international news (slow news period & good story of American leaving the us bc of politics).
All that to say, you should go. You’ll never regret the time with your kid!
