Last night Vicki Boutin released her Christmas line for preorder. I was thinking I'd come over here to see if anyone was talking yet about December Daily this morning. I also went through my albums this morning and realized just how much I love that I did them. I was considering doing an album again this year. This is going to be a little bit long... I've been thinking a whole lot lately about scrapbooking. I started scrapping in 2000 and I did it the very traditional way. I did follow trends and push my creativity, but basically I did the 12x12 albums, mostly with funny stories about my little kids + recognizing their milestones. In 2009 we hit the recession and divorce came too. I didn't feel like scrapbooking any of it. So I simply took the best pics of my kids and put them in a Shutterfly album, called it good. In 2011, I met Jeremy and life was looking up again. We lived in a very tiny house without room to scrapbook with paper, so I did digital scrapbooking all the way through my 2014 pictures. Still pretty much the same style, just digital. In 2015, we moved and I had enough space to paper scrap again, so I went back to it. I finally had a decent phone camera and I was in the phase where I didn't want to spend whole events behind a camera. So this led to a lot of one photo layouts, many without a story. In 2020 I decided that I wanted to try Project Life/pocket scrapping. I enjoyed the fact that it lent itself to random one off photos and I had room to give a bit of journaling. I did that until my child died in 2022. I never finished 2022. But in 2023, I began again. I did make it the whole year. But in 2024, I had some issues with my family and I questioned why I was doing this and I thought maybe no one would care about any of it. I bought a traveler's notebook for my camping adventures and did DD. Other than that, I let the daily stuff go. Now, I'm sitting here thinking that I miss it. I have enjoyed scrapbooking for years and years and even if no one cares at all about my albums, I do. I like marking the events in my life and being creative. But PL/pocket albums just seem too large scale. And traditional scrapbooking feels even bigger. And I definitely don't want to go back to digital. I don't own a personal computer at this point, my tech skills are really on the decline and it doesn't involve paper which I like. But what's left? Mini albums? Junk journaling? A planner? I'm open to considering the pros and cons of any kind of scrapbooking. Does anyone do something off the beaten path or have even seen something a bit different you can recommend? Anyway, I have some kind of desire but I can't quite figure out the thing that will suit me. Update: I ordered some A6 size traveler's notebook inserts from Yellow Paper House recommended by caspad. They should arrive some time this week. I'm going to give that a shot.

I mainly create 6x8 mini albums. I haven’t created a 12x12 layout in almost 10 years.
I tried junk journaling but lost steam for it fairly quickly.
I haven’t been excited about scrapbooking in a year or so but I’m sure it’s just a phase. I still buy occasionally when something spurs my mojo.
I love looking through old albums and projects so I know that I can never completely give up memory keeping.

I mainly create 6x8 mini albums. Is there a particular album you like? Also do you do pocket pages, full size, or are the albums you use have pages?

I would suggest asking yourself what types of photos you would like to take, of what events, travels, ect. Then from there ask how many photos per event/vacation, etc would there be.
Then you can say okay is a 6x8 big enough? Would you like having smaller photos on a page if you want to include many? Or will it be single photo layouts?
I did a 6x6 for my mom of the grandkids. One photo per page. I found it personally hard to work with.
I used to do 12x12 but after doing DD too I enjoyed the fun and freedom of the pockets pages. So in 2020 I moved to 9x12 D ring albums where I use various pocket pages or single 9x12.
This gives me the freedom to mix and match based on photos and creativity.

If I could find a source for TN near that size, I'd probably be sold. I got mine on Etsy. I used to do 12x12 but after doing DD too I enjoyed the fun and freedom of the pockets pages. So in 2020 I moved to 9x12 D ring albums where I use various pocket pages or single 9x12. I did 12x12 my first couple of years. Then switched to 9x12 and that still felt like I used too many random pics that I totally didn't need to include. I feel like my PL albums (especially the 12x12) are just way too visually overwhelming.

I don't do Project Life, but I do a monthly page of all the random stories that aren't big enough for their own page, in a grid format. Last year it was a 12 by 12 cardstock with nine-ish squares (a mix of pattern paper and photos) this year I used pockets. It's not as fluff filled (trying to fill a spot on a boring day or when I forgot to take a photo...) but still captures the little things.

jeremysgirl, do you follow Ali Edwards? She had a flip through of her 6x8 albums and I really liked seeing her more meaningful stories in a smaller format. I can see myself moving to something smaller in the next year or two. That’s exactly what I do too @breetheflea. I usually have 6 small 3x4 photos in a grid for the mini monthly stories, but found if I slightly layer them, they’ll fit on a 8x11 too. I like having the option in my 12x12. I’m definitely seeing a scale back in how much I include now that we are empty nesters. My months are half what happens at my house, and half what my daughter is up to. She’s gracious enough to share photos. I just saw a video where someone cut down an 8x11 binder to make it a 6x10, I think? It really opens up possibilities to whatever size makes sense for your project.

I would group my photos by the month and I still felt like it was so random that none of my pages were cohesive in any way. But I totally did not want to have a full page of one thing/event. One photo will do me. I just don't know how to present them. But since pantsonfire brought up the DD I did, I did absolutely love making that little album. Maybe that's the direction I should head.

One is an AE album that was just so cute I couldn't pass it up. I did some travel layouts in another one and I didn't get quite comfortable that the pocket pages in that size. However, I did like the open pockets.

Pshhh no need to be ashamed! I have several unused albums, those are called ‘stash’ in my world. If you search on YT, Ali Edwards 6x8, you’ll see one where she flips through her 2024 album. I always title my monthly page of mini stories ‘July Recap’, or ‘July Mini Stories’, something like that. I don’t love random stories together, but in my head, this ties them together.

Do you want to jump right in or do you want to ponder until Christmas and try DD again? If you want to jump right in (and you liked PL style), you could try Week in the Life. You don't need all the product. You just create a formula for each day and do your best to document daily life. I never go as crazy as the stuff you see online. I've really enjoyed it. I am waiting until we have a date for our drywall install and that will be my week. Sometime this Fall. If you've taken a trip recently, that would be fun to do as well!

If you search on YT, Ali Edwards 6x8, you’ll see one where she flips through her 2024 album. I'm going to go look. I love that you want to try something new! This is so fun. What is calling to you? Honestly after pantsonfire's post I thought about what I enjoyed most lately. And I do enjoy the TN camping album. And I loved that little Christmas album. I usually do a 6x8 for DD but I happened up the little leather book on Etsy last year and I bought it thinking I'd have a low key Christmas so I only needed a small canvas. I thoroughly enjoyed that book. So maybe that's my sign I need something small. Do you want to jump right in or do you want to ponder until Christmas and try DD again? I was on the fence (as usual, seems like something gets me every year) about DD this year. Sometimes I feel like we are repeating the same memories over and over again. But it's a fun project. And I like that it has a beginning and an end. I did an October daily in 2023 and I really enjoyed that too. I am thinking small albums might be my jam.

I totally get it. I was at this point a few years ago, I wanted to be creative but didn't feel like making huge albums again because I'm not sure what will happen to them after I'm gone. I talked to a friend who happens to be a children's art therapist and she said making art is a personal thing and that we should do this for ourselves and not worry about what will happen to them after we die. If it brings you joy to create things, you should create things! That being said, from your answers above, I would definitely keep it small. If you're like me, you have tons of 12x12 paper and you can make your own TN's with 12x12 paper if you want to use your supplies and not buy things (here's a playlist on YouTube about how to make your own TN's Dearly Dee ) And as an aside, for those who say crafting isn't art, they can go suck eggs.

If you search on YT, Ali Edwards 6x8, you’ll see one where she flips through her 2024 album. I did watch it. Honestly I really like it. But there's a lot of outside the page protector. I did this in an October Daily a few years ago and I love it. But the size is weird to cut down 12x12 paper to that particular size that is bigger than 6x8. And then I love the look of the full page size pictures but how does one get them printed to that exact specification? This is the reason why I never quite got on with the 6x8. I have several 6x8 albums too but except for the October Daily, I was an in the page protector scrapper on all of them. I'm still wishy washy about it. I always title my monthly page of mini stories ‘July Recap’, or ‘July Mini Stories’, something like that. I don’t love random stories together, but in my head, this ties them together. This is a good idea.

I wanted to be creative but didn't feel like making huge albums again because I'm not sure what will happen to them after I'm gone. What did you end up doing? Did you go back to the full 12x12 or did you size down a bit? (here's a playlist on YouTube about how to make your own TN's Dearly Dee Thank you. I've just watched this and it totally motivating me to do my own rather than try to find exactly what I am looking for. What's nice is that I can control the number of pages. That was hard with the Christmas album because it was pre-put together. And then scrapbooking is bulky. And as an aside, for those who say crafting isn't art, they can go suck eggs. Agreed.

I mostly scrapbook, my daily, everyday, random things in what is a planner, but I never actually do planning. I still make 12x12 pages, paper and digital when I feel like it for bigger events (family gatherings, holidays, etc) I first tried the smaller scale in June 2020 (mostly bcz of the craziness of that time) and started with Heidi Swapp's Blur books, which are 7.5x9 and have a weekly horizontal format. I did that style thru October 2021, then used the monthly style, which has a limited number of weeks, which I did from Oct 2021 thru Nov 2022. I didn't scrap every week. I just did which ones I felt like doing and sometimes I incorporate Ali Edward's things into like, like Pieces of Home or Day in the Life. I took a break from that kind of scrapping for 2023, but missed it so I went back to it in 2024 with a Happy Planner in the vertical format. I love how it came out, but since I was doing every week because it's a dated planner, I did less other scrapping/hobbies. I find I love the everyday/daily stuff, but in the loosest format possible. I'd been following Linda's Hobinochi style ( lasteve1) and at the very last minute found the day-free Hobinochi Techno A5 for 2025, which is just about 6x8. I have pages that look like traditional layouts with photos, but mostly it's snippets of things. I try to do a summary page of each month, but if I'm too busy I may just do specific days/events. I will include reviews of tv shows, books, etc. Some of these are ongoing list sections that I go back and add to. It's generally chronological, but I don't worry if I want to put something on a page and it happened before the last, I just date things or add notes. I've been doing collages of receipts, tags, product packaging, etc. I really like how it captures things in a fresh way. There are monthly spreads in the first part of the planner, so I use that to log things as a reference tool. And I also just decorate those pages as fun and carefree as possible. There are some pages in there that I will or may possibly make a regular 12x12 layout for also when I go to a crop, but I am still glad I have it documented in some way recent. The day-free style allows way more flexibility to not have to do every week. I keep a post-it note on the inside of cover and jot down ideas for spreads or stories I want to document. I plan to continue a format like this, whether I use the same notebook or not, am not sure yet. I understand the feeling of going thru phases with scrapping, and I think that's what keeps it interesting is changing things up. And also, I always say I will never not do it in some way. Yes, maybe take breaks, or skip certain styles or projects, but it's just part of how I process life and remember things. I will leave some pages to my nephew documenting his life, but sometimes I envision being an elderly lady having an epic bonfire to burn it all when I'm ready. My attachment is to the process, not the output. Also the best advice I took, is just to start. I didn't know how I wanted this year's album to go, but I started, made notes, marked things with post-its and it's worked out just fine. Don't wait for a specific point or date or anything like that, just start!

For travelers notebooks, A6 is 4.1x5.8 and Pocket is 3.5x5.5 so you could go with blank inserts in those sizes similar to your DD. Yellow Paper House has nice inserts.
What about a 6x8 or 4x8 Citrus Twist album? You could mix some pockets in with some full size pages depending on what you feel like scrapping. One pocket can be one story. So a 4 3x4 pocket protector could have four unrelated stories/photos/moments/memorabilia.
The Elle's Studio and Citrus Twist design teams have great inspiration for storytelling in smaller spaces.
It doesn't have to be all 2 page spreads. Do what makes you happy in the moment. Even if it changes from page to page within one album.

You said so many good things scrapcat I'm going to think about them further. But I get the idea of wanting some sort of calendar structure. Honestly it's hard for me to not feel like the pauses I've made have screwed up the chronological order I've had going on for 20 years. I've been thinking about how when my kids were little I did things by the season. That might feel just right in the scheme of things. Gives me a loose calendar but not obligating me to any particular days or weeks. I am out right now with Jeremy picking up our camper. And I just said to him that it doesn't matter if the kids toss my books when I'm dead. I'll be dead. 😂 But a bonfire sounds like the perfect way to go out. 😉 Just start. I think I'll pull some paper out next Tuesday (I'll finally have some time) and see if I can put a little book together.

Something smaller, maybe that doesn't feel so daunting? Another thing I do is inserting different sized pages into my project life album. Sometimes I have more to say than will fit in a 3x4 space, but, not enough to want to do a 12x12.

I think finding your right size is really important, and your “texture” - I don’t know what else to call it but I don’t like the feel or look of plastic page protectors, some people love the layers and texture of mixed media (for me, I hate the texture of acrylic paint too!) Some people enjoy making cardstock pages on rings or in a binder, other people prefer a stapled or bound book. I like the smoothness of certain kinds of notebooks and there’s a sweet spot size that’s about a quarter to a half sheet of letter sized paper that feels good to me. From there it might be fun to play with what size you like to print your photos and what kind of writing and embellishment you like. I wouldn’t commit to anything too hard - just play around and see what speaks to you right now. You’re allowed to make up your own format. There’s a woman who used to share online about her scrapbooking - she didn’t have much access to supplies so she makes small pages with lots of layers and artsy stuff, but then she often pulls them apart later to use in her newer pages. She’s all about the process, and the thing that still kind of makes them archival is that she takes great photos of the finished pages. That might sound like a nightmare to you but I mention it to say, it’s only paper, play around and find your own way

I’m loving 6x8 albums right now. Especially Citrus Twist. Simple Stories is nice too, but smaller spine. I do pocket pages, full pages in the protector, and lots of out of the protector pages, from full size, to 4x6, 3x8 and even tags. I like the mixture. It’s a great size to play in and manageable.

This is a very cool company. I just may order some. I like the various colors too. So a 4 3x4 pocket protector could have four unrelated stories/photos/moments/memorabilia. It doesn't have to be all 2 page spreads. Do what makes you happy in the moment. Even if it changes from page to page within one album. I am not a two page spread scrapper. But I do like one cohesive page. That's part of what felt too visually chaotic for me about 12x12 pocket scrapping.

I have definitely felt this too, but then I decided for me doing Dec Daily is kind of my own creative tradition that I ENJOY doing just for me each year. Even if no one else looks at it, I really enjoy the creative process, it gets me in the Christmas spirit and I also enjoy looking at old albums ahead of making a new one. Kind of like how I enjoy looking at Christmas wrapping paper each year and buying a few new rolls . Finally, for me, the creative inspiration in the community - foundation pages and seeing how other people use products and then trying to scrap lift, is just a creative shot in the arm each year. I genuinely love that endorphin feeling that comes from seeing people post using the same products I have bought and getting inspired to try a new technique or layout based on what someone else came up with. I have found that the 6x8 size works well for me - not too big but big enough to create the stories I enjoy. But I have also done some smaller ones too. I just know anything bigger (with a few exceptions like PL), I get overwhelmed and don't finish. I need a small enough size to be able to be productive in getting pages done and not in analysis paralysis.

Texas Scrap said: I need a small enough size to be able to be productive in getting pages done and not in analysis paralysis. I didn't used to be this way but I think this is where I've landed too. And not just with scrapbooking. But I haven't made a crochet blanket in a very long time. And it was my practice to always have one going. I've just been doing shawls. Which I can do in about a month or six weeks (around my other commitments and crafts). I just feel lately like I don't have the endurance for a crochet blanket at this stage of whatever place I am in. I am still quilting. But even the project I'm doing right now is basically a big collection of a variety of different squares. I can make a square and walk away until I feel like making another. Weird huh? I have done DD for four years. And I have never bought AE product. I look at it every year and consider it but I get enough community right here talking with everyone.
