I grew up in MD in a county that borders DC. We moved out of MD 30 years ago but still have family there and visit often. I hate when we go back to my beloved small hometown in MD and see all the crime and devastation and trash in what was once a beautiful area. Most areas of DC are not safe and that crime has spilled out to the areas bordering DC. My family have all moved to the Eastern Shore of MD or to other states. I think it’s great that Trump is trying to clean up the crime in DC. I wish other crime ridden areas like Baltimore, Chicago, etc. would do something about theirs. Y’all just hate that Trump is willing to DO something about crime instead of just talking about it. Other cities need to get tough on crime. When we see all these videos of people walking into stores and taking arm loads of items without paying. If the police would spend time watching the surveillance videos and hunt these people down and charge them with some serious jail time, these types of crimes would stop. They just need to get tougher on crime and not allow this to happen. And then, the citizens in these cities complain that there are no grocery stores or Walgreens locally for them to shop. Or they complain that everything inside the stores are locked up and you need to wait around for someone to unlock the case for you. Well, that’s because your city leaders didn’t get tough on crime and allowed these stores to be looted over and over again and those stores had enough and closed down. I feel sorry for the single mom with no car who needs diapers and food for her children or the elderly folks that have lived there forever and now have no stores close to them to shop. SOMEBODY needs to stop these criminals and I’m happy to see Trump doing something about it! Oh fuck off. And then fuck off again once you are done doing that. Is that some of that "reasoned, good faith discussion" some of you like to condem others for not having?

I live here and so does my family and this is not our experience nor that of our coworkers, friends and the vast majority of fellow citizens. The Eastern Shore keeps voting for Andy Harris who can't even be bothered to show up to speak with his constituents. He voted against funding that provided lifeguards for Assateague and as a result, there have been drownings. That's one small example, but I'm sure it matters to those whose loved ones lost their lives. Assateague drownings
Maybe if Trump had stuck to stiffing his contractors, we wouldn't even know he was a child rapist. If we're calling out crime, lets stand on business.

I’ve got many ideas on the root causes of crime. I’m sure you’re going to have some liberal bullshit ideas on this though. I want politicians that are tough on crime. I want to see an end to these people going into stores and taking whatever they want and they just get a hand slap and they’re out there doing the same thing the next day. Which only encourages more people to steal because they know nothing will happen to them. How would you feel if your house was broken into and they took all your personal items? Or, if the one and only grocery store that is close to you closed because of continued theft and you had to drive 3 times as far to shop? And what if you didn’t have transportation?Or your local store locks EVERYTHING up and you have to wait on someone to unlock each item? I’m sure you think oh these stores can afford to take the hit. But can YOU afford to take that hit if you personally were the victim of theft? I want people to get serious jail time for theft so others may think twice before they steal. If it was you personally or your business that was being looted, you’d be singing a different tune here. I’m thankful to live and shop in a very low crime area, but I certainly feel for those that don’t have that luxury and I’d like to have their areas cleaned up and crime free too. And for them to be able to shop safely and close to their home. This. jeremysgirl, you wanted to talk about policies. How do you feel about policies coming from your party where they don't lock up the thieves, so stores are forced to lock up the products or go out of business?

And for them to be able to shop safely and close to their home. I can imagine this very well because on January 6, 2021, I watched the US Capital being broken into by thugs summoned to the same city that now suddenly, supposedly, has a crime problem. I watched them not only break in but attack the very police who were there to protect the building. Those criminals were tried and convicted and you know what happened then? The same man who claims that D.C. needs federal help to protect itself and who failed to summon the National Guard on January 6 to protect the capital, our legislators and the police, pardoned these criminals. Those long prison sentences were overturned. So I really don't believe that Trump has suddenly become Mr. Law and Order. I don't believe he cares at all about crime in D.C. or anywhere else for that matter. He has his own agenda to build and maintain power. This is just another move on the chess board for him.

I’m sure all shoplifting ended in countries with a dictator and police state. And economic conditions didn’t deteriorate increasing the volume of people willing to give it a try out of desperation.

Why did you tell me to fuck off? Because we finally have a President that has balls and is getting shit done. And you liberals hate that he’s accomplished so much in so little time being in office. And all that taxpayer waste that was uncovered? Think about all the good things that money can do and put to much better use now and help the citizens of our country! And y’all are upset that the waste was uncovered! Why? Because it shows how poorly the previous administration was running things. I want the border closed and all illegal immigrants deported. If you want to come into this country, do it legally and don’t skip the line. All other countries have closed borders. But when Trump closed our border, we are now racist? So the other countries with closed borders are racist too? Obama deported way more illegals. But somehow Trump is the racist one? And I want a President that is tough on crime. I’d love to see all states get tough and reduce crime across the country. This would benefit all of us. I’d love to see all the funds that had previously been used to house and feed illegals used instead for our veterans, low income families and the elderly. This is all common sense. Reduce crime and help low income AMERICANS. When and if this country is back on track, then funds can be used to help other countries. But we’ve got SO much need here in our own country. Let’s fix our country and help our people first. Our tax dollars that we Americans pay should help Americans.

I had gotten the idea that Trump likes criminals:
“ Mr. Trump’s remarks seemed largely aimed at rewriting history and the reality of crime in Washington. Soon after he took office, Mr. Trump pardoned hundreds of rioters, some of them violent, who ransacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Many had already been convicted of their crimes and were serving their sentences before being immediately released in January.
And in the summer of 2020, Mr. Trump deployed more than 5,000 National Guard troops to Washington to crack down on mostly peaceful demonstrators pushing for racial justice. That deployment was widely seen as a debacle.”
So he is going to use NG and various types of agents. But their(agents) ability to arrest people is limited
“. One complicating factor of using federal agents for essentially street-based police work is that those agents do not have the same authority as police officers to arrest people for minor criminal offenses, so the current view among Trump administration officials is that if federal agents see someone commit such a crime, they can stop and detain them until a local police officer arrives and makes an arrest.”
As for the NG, pretty much the same. This seems like a big wrinkle in Trump’s strategery. Mayor Bowser did say that she would cooperate, so maybe they will work it out. Maybe not.

I can't disclose too much but I spent the day with federal employees from various agencies who grew increasingly frustrated & angry during the day about the ambiguity of staff being reassigned to DC for this. They couldn't focus on the task they needed to do today because they were so preoccupied. This task they couldn't focus on is allegedly critically important to national security (sarcasm heavily implied.) And to add to the context, these are federal employees who have ALREADY been reassigned to do jobs which have nothing to do with their various agencies, for which they have received no training and which clearly many of them do not want to do. And the reassignment apparently was so ambiguous that it was basically like "you need to send xxx# of employees to DC for an indefinite amount of time by tomorrow, let us know who you are sending."
Ooph. Maybe I did disclose too much, lol!

No detail is too small for Herr Trump./s Seriously, I don’t blame them. This operation is designed to distract folks from the fact that Trump has no intention of releasing the Epstein files. So obv. It was planned hastily.

So glad he's working to clean up D.C.! Do you live in DC? If so, what are the issues that you, as a resident, are concerned with? You don’t need to live there to want to have the crime cleaned up. I’m glad that he’s cleaning up all that crime too, and I hope it spills out into a lot of other blue cities where the criminals have taken over everything.

The issue with the border and immigration is how it is being done. I think we all agree that we needed comprehensive immigration reform years ago. But there are a lot of things wrong with how Trump is doing it now. It is inhumane and is targeting people who are here doing good things--not the "rapists and murderers" that Trump said he was going to focus on. Trump is racist and so is Stephen Miller and other members of his administration. Their methods and intentions of removing people is based in large part on that racism. We are also paying a lot of money to house people in detention centers. Guess who is benefitting from that? And then we are losing any tax revenue from the immigrants themselves. I also am curious if you have been paying attention to the ways that Trump has been taking away services and jobs from the US citizens that you want to help?

The lies, you mean? They laid out a lot of lies about a crime wave when crime has actually fallen substantially. Do you have any concerns for what he may do to the homeless people he says will be sent “far from the capital?” Or do those people just not matter to you. They’re American citizens but not, you know, the kind Republicans like. Where's all the posts complaining about getting rid of the homeless in California when Xi came to visit? 🦗 🦗 🦗

From conversations here, I don't think that is happening in just blue states or blue cities. How about we talk about potential solutions rather than further politicizing the issue? Okay, what do you suggest needs to be done? I think a big part of the issue is degradation of society. The US has always been more of an individualistic society (as opposed to the collectivism common in some other countries). That has served us well in some aspects, but I think we are at a crossroads where it is starting to hurt us. What are the reasons that people steal things? They want or need the item. What stops people from stealing? There are usually a number of factors. One could be that people have the means to buy it for themselves. Another factor could be that they don't want to get in trouble. They also may bear the shame of getting into trouble. They may recognize that the store owners or employees know them and don't want to hurt the local store. If those factors aren't there or they aren't strong enough deterrents (within the person or in society) they are more likely to steal (or engage in another crime). We have a lot of disconnection from families and community members these days. There is also the legal aspect of it. I do think that there need to be consequences for stealing and other crimes. Those consequences need to fit the crime, though. People talk about wanting "them" to be tough on crime, but what exactly does that mean? I don't think being thrown in prison to rot for petty theft is fitting of the crime. Just like I don't think being sent to CECOT to be emotionally, sexually and physically abused is fitting of being an undocumented person. There is a lot of talk about cities being too lenient on criminals, but I would like to know more about the stats as well as the role of the store. A lot of stores don't really do much about theft it seems. So, it would be difficult for the law to get involved.

So glad he's working to clean up D.C.! Are you effing kidding me? This is horrifying, but it’s a good reminder to me that there are people like you out there cheering this shit on. It’s horrifying to me that people are stupid enough to complain about wanting to have the capital of the United States cleaned up of its crime. The liberal judges are too busy with no cash bail and letting these criminals off and out of jail. Trump didn’t have a choice.

Second, he did have a choice. Did he talk with the mayor and/or police about what they are doing to reduce crime even further and see if they need anything from the federal government?

I’ve got many ideas on the root causes of crime. I’m sure you’re going to have some liberal bullshit ideas on this though. I want politicians that are tough on crime. I want to see an end to these people going into stores and taking whatever they want and they just get a hand slap and they’re out there doing the same thing the next day. So what are your ideas on the root causes of crime? I don't see any that you shared, liberal bullshit or otherwise. The US has the highest rate per capita of incarceration among wealthy nations. Second place isn't even close. So your theory that "nothing will happen to them" isn't really supported by the data. If your theory was correct, our astronomical rate of incarceration would lead to near zero levels of crime, and yet here we all are. We also happen to have the highest rate of violent crime among wealthy nations, so increased incarceration hasn't fixed that, either. Well, you know what assuming gets you. I don't think stores can afford to take the hit at all. I think food deserts are a serious concern. But I don't think, based on all the evidence, that even higher rates of incarceration are going to solve the problem. So since it seems that high rates of incarceration haven't actually solved the problem, what other ideas do you have? Trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity.

Lol, someone is mighty upset with my posts. I wonder why? Is telling me to fuck off the best you can do? Shows how you handle people you don’t agree with instead of handling it like an adult. Lol, don’t flatter yourself. Not upset in the least, thats just how I talk when Im beyond done reading the kind of predictable Trump-enabling constitution-violating bullshit you just wrote. Then stop reading it if you are “beyond done”. Why are you still posting if you are “beyond done”. Every single thing glory77 wrote is true and valid. EVERY SINGLE THING.

Oh fuck off. And then fuck off again once you are done doing that. Lol, someone is mighty upset with my posts. I wonder why? Is telling me to fuck off the best you can do? Shows how you handle people you don’t agree with instead of handling it like an adult. Why did you tell me to fuck off? Because we finally have a President that has balls and is getting shit done. And you liberals hate that he’s accomplished so much in so little time being in office. Prices are up across the board and only getting higher due to tariffs, and we're spending billions of dollars in taxpayer money to keep mostly non-criminal immigrants in concentration camps. Our peer countries despise us while our administration is cozy with the world's worst dictators. I guess that's an "accomplishment" by some people's standards, but not mine. "Savings" are a fraction of what Elon claimed, and far from helping the citizens of our country, Americans in need have paid a steep price in cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, as well as losing essential funding for education and medical research. What *legal* avenues are there for poor people to come to this country and fill jobs that need to be filled? The Biden adminstration brokered a bipartisan immigration bill that would have solved some of these issues, but Trump made the Republicans vote against it in the end. The racism comes in when he wants to put the brown immigrants in concentration camps but invites in a bunch of largely unvetted white ones from South Africa, and when he largely ignores visa overstays from countries other than those south of our border. Biden and Obama also prioritized actually finding and deporting criminals rather than rounding up every brown-skinned gardener and abuela they can find just to get higher numbers. We hadn't been housing and feeding many immigrants at all until Trump stuck them in camps. They were generally housing and feeding themselves. The refugees and asylees we help contribute more than they take. Now we're spending billions on arresting and incarcerating them with to end in sight. Is that what you wanted? And I feel it necessary to point out that when Democrats try to expand social safety net programs for the groups you name, Republicans call it "socialism" and vote against it. I'll point out again the GOP's long standing complaints about "socialism." I don't think your view is common sense at all. I think you've allowed yourself to be swayed by ... something that isn't common sense. I'd encourage you to do your own research on the claims Trump makes. The reality will likely surprise you. I think we agree about the need to reduce crime and to fix our immigration system. Please consider that continuing to do what we've always done, or doubling down on it, is likely not the best way to accomplish those things. It may be there's something we can learn from our peer countries with both lower rates of crime and incarceration.

I know all I need to know about anyone using more energy worrying about theft and being “tough on crime” than they are about how our immigrants, the actual humans living here and working in our society are being treated in these detention centers. What about that crime? Anyway, came back on to share something DH just sent, I know I could use a laugh right now. Hamilton fans especially will appreciate this.

As an almost 40 year MD resident, I'm curious where this rampant crime is you speak of?
Maybe all the people that burned Portland down to the ground have moved on to DC. (Sarcasm)

What are the blue cities “where the criminals have taken over everything?”

What are the blue cities “where the criminals have taken over everything?” Yeah, when I was in NYC last week it was grim. Criminals with weapons prowling the streets, New Yorkers cowering in terror…
