An unprompted letter was written by Senator Joseph Martin of Maine and sent to Western Canadian MLAs (Member of Legislative Assembly) to join the USA. Western provinces are Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Brennan Day a Conservative MLA in British Columbia took the time to call and verify the letter, then wrote a response. I'll post the link. There is a twitter link in the article for Brennan Day which includes the letter written by Joseph Martin and the response by Brennan Day. The arrogance in this letter is absolutely astounding. MLA Responds to Senator's Letter

Yet many Americans wonder why Canadians are so angry.
Worry about your own country and leave us the hell alone.

Hmmmmβ¦wonder how that will go over for him with the majority of his constituents? It said he was a state legislator so I am not sure his area , but would guess he would get more push back than agreement. But you never know.
I was wondering how many border states are actually doing the opposite and trying to distance their states from Trumpβs idiotic, arrogant and just down right stupid weird obsession? Even if it is only for βshowβ, βplayβ, or whateverβ¦he is hurting the citizens of his own country.
If he is so concerned about and works so hard to help us,works harder and better than anyone has ever worked for the middle class for every US citizenβ¦blah blah blahβ¦why is he trying so hard to tank small business and peoples livelihoods in border states and towns over something that will never happen? His well hated tariffs policies here, at least seem like it is trying to do something. But this whole taunting of making them states is just hurting his own citizens and there is no way to spin it that you are trying to help them.
Burlington VT renamed Church Street temporarily to Rue Canada (for like a month). People have been standing on overpasses by the border with thank you and welcome signs, etc. There are marinas up by the border where probably 40% of their slips are rented by Canadians and they are deciding not to continue to come to the states. A huge % of my stateβs tourist economy is Canadians. There are so many Canadians that have camps and 2nd properties in areas that really need the business. Why would try and hurt all these communities who rely the good relationship we have had with family, friends and people just across the border.

And the US wonders why tourism is down. It's not because Vegas has outpriced themselves. It's not because the Canadian dollar is weak. Those things habe been like that for years. It's because we are not supporting this 51st state idea crap. We are quiet and don't wear our patriotism on our sleeve, and shirts and cars and houses but we are deeply patriotic. Yes we are similar to the US, compared to so many countries around the world and going to the US is familiar in many of the same stores, restaurants, products but it's superficial. Our similarities aren't at the core of what makes us and our country unique and ours, in those areas we are vastly different.

We just want to be left alone to live our lives LOL. There seems to be a segment of the American population who watch far too much right-winged media and want to "save" Canadians from our obvious oppression. There are actually some Canadians who feel the same way. My BIL is already beating the drums on "climate lockdowns" due to forest fires and the WEF. There are no lockdowns π I look forward to the day when Americans elect a sane president and the chaos/noise stops once again. ![]()

How embarrassing. And infuriating. But this part of the reply: "Your letter is a perfect example of what many Canadians find so deeply troubling about the American worldview...." Please no. I understand it's the impression we give, especially now. But whatever outrageous shit is going on here isn't 'the American worldview". Most of us are normal. Most of us are just ashamed and embarrassed about the things happening here. I wonder why anyone would WANT to come here now- for holiday, work, school or anything else. If I were from another country, I'd stay far away.
Also- I don't actually know anyone who doesn't feel fondness for Canada and Canadians.
I don't actually know anyone dumb enough to believe they're ripe for poaching either.
We're just so embarrassed.
(Most of us.)

And to echo the above post - his worldview as a MAGA state senator is not the American worldview. I believe we are a largely sane people who have allowed these morons to take over through apathy and complacency, and because many falsely believed that our elected leaders would generally hold themselves bound by the constitution.

Definitely going to help his tourism-dependent state π. As a Vermont resident I can tell you for a fact that Canadian tourism is way down. Just before Memorial Day I was up in Maine beyond BoothBay around Pemaquid and commented they also seemed to have a lot less Canadian tourists/cars. It is hurting and hurting the smaller businesses as a larger portion (at least IMO and personal experience). For nothing but stupidity.

Meanwhile Maine tourism has plummeted this year and the people who own and work at businesses that cater to those missing tourists are worried about their livelihoods. And what do their leaders do---make it worse, of course! Good job!
