... and pools this time of year, but just a reminder to keep an eye on your pets around the pool as well.
A dear friend lost her dog last night. We had a big storm and her area lost power, so she went to spend the evening with another friend and took her dog with her. Somehow in the dark the dog fell into the pool and drowned before anyone noticed. He was an elderly dog with failing eyesight so that may have played a part.
Needless to say she is heartbroken. It had never occurred to me that a dog would be prone to falling into the pool or even that they might drown. Just thought I would share this story with the peas - please keep an eye on kids AND pets around the pool.

Oh, how sad. I have friend whose Bassett hound drowned in their pool also. They didn't realize he could fall in, and it happened when they weren't home. Such a heartbreak.

How sad. I would never have thought about the dog drowning. I guess I thought they could all swim and would magically be able to get out.

That's so sad, and a good PSA. DD's dad and stepmum had a puppy who fell in a hot tub and drowned. It was awful.

It's a common thing here, Our local channel 10 it's there weather guys' motto. He says "watch your kids around water" after every weather report. It happens far too often several every year. Even with fences. So scary!

How awful! That is so sad. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) Thanks for the PSA. I will admit that it never has occurred to me that my pooches might be in danger around a pool.

How very sad for her. My puppy fell in my pool a couple of weeks after I brought him home. Fortunately I was out back with him. It was cold outside and I had put a little vest thing on him to keep him warmer. He was playing in one of the raised planters by the edge of the deep end and was bouncing around. He bounced too far to one side and splash! I worried that I might not be able to reach the water from there since the planter is raised up so far, but I was able to reach him by his vest and I hauled him inside and gave him a warm bath immediately.
I had already made the decision not to ever let him outside alone, and this confirmed it. He hasn't fallen in again, but boy does he ever race around close to those edges. I can see it happening again at some point. I thing I'll bring the net into the back instead of storing it on the side yard. I would jump in for him, of course, but if I can reach him faster with the net, I will.

ETA- I forgot to mention I don't let my puppies swim alone. I was gonna mention that. Even Pia. She is a good swimmer but I have to tell her to go to the steps after a few laps because she forgets. She gets a little tired and her but starts to sink. We don't have that big of a pool and she's a big puppy but i still worry she gets tired fast.

Every pet should be taught how to get out of the pool. Yes even the cats. Once a year, when it's warmer out, much to my pets horror, I put them in the pool and teach them where the pool steps are. If they can find the steps they can get out. But many pets will just try and climb up the side of the pool, which does not always work, especially if they are trying to climb the higher hot tub wall.

I've known a couple of people who had pets drown in the backyard pool. We have an in-ground pool, and don't allow the dogs out back unsupervised. My westie has fallen in once - we were on the pool deck with her, and she was barking at a squirrel... she was backing up as she was barking and backed right into the deep end. I got her to swim to the ledge in the deep end and scooped her out - she was only in the water for a brief time, and she was panicked and very tired. Ds's whippet manages to fall in nearly every time he's here - we just haul him out, but he gets so freaked out that I don't doubt he would tire very quickly.

My sister had a Bassett hound that drowned. He tried to get on a float that was left in the pool over night. I'll never forget the next day when he was discovered, it was awful. Please be careful with you pets around pools.
