Do you scan your own photos OR do you send them off to be scanned? If you send them off, what service do you use?
What about memorabilia? I'm figuring it would be easier to do it myself, not to mention that it wouldn't cost a thing.
I have a scanner (Epson Perfection V500) I found on a great sale but have never used. Would that work for memorabilia?
I have things like graduation programs, ticket stubs, etc.

I scan all my own stuff. I have an old HP all in one that doesn't print so well anymore. DH bought a new Canon, and was going to recycle the HP, but I snagged it for my crafty room.

I also scan all my stuff. Anything flat can be easily scanned and if it is bigger than the scanner bed I use Microsoft ICE to stitch the sections of it together.

Okay, scanner is plugged in and connected to the computer, and I'm ready to scan a few documents like my son's "certificate of birth" from the hospital (not the official state-issued one) and other documents. I just read the online instructions and it gives me the option of "scan" and "scan to PDF" (as well as "copy" and a few other options that I don't think apply. I just want to "scan" right? What would I use "scan to PDF" for? Oh, crud, I just pushed the scan button to give it a try before posting this and got a screen on my computer with all kinds of settings. What dpi should I use? Update and another question. I played around and scanned a document at 300 dpi -- just to see what it looked like. Now I need to know where to save it. I have a macbook pro. Should I save to Documents, Downloads, iphoto, or ?? I'm planning to buy Photoshop Elements, if that makes a difference. I am so sorry to be asking all these questions. I googled them and got all sorts of answers -- some conflicting.

I just scan and save it to my computer in a folder called "scanned documents"...LOL. I don't scan too much so I don't have that folder broken down into sub-folders but you could if you are scanning a lot of stuff from one event.
My husband sometimes scans documents to PDF but I think he only does that if he is emailing that document to someone and they want it in PDF form.

Thank you, Tammiem2pnc! I'm relieved that's all I have to do because I know how to do that! lol I was afraid I was supposed to save them to PSE or something, which I haven't purchased yet.

I scan everything at 300dpi or higher. The higher your dpi the bigger you can enlarge your final image. 300dpi is perfectly fine for printing and I've had tiny old photos (that are like 2" square) enlarged to 8" without any problems when they were scanned at 300dpi.
If you scan to pdf you'll end up with a document. If you want to be able to resize or crop what you're scanning I would save all your scans as a jpg or tiff file (which basically makes them the same as a photo).
I save all my scans into a folder called "scans" but once I've done any cropping, renaming of the scan, etc that needs to be done I move the files into the appropriate folder. So if I was scanning a certificate of birth and I stored all my photos in folders by year I would move the certificate into the folder that matches the year of birth.

PSE will only look at folders on your computer. You can not save anything TO PSE. This is true of most if not all programs. You use the programs to access files on your computer. You can save files as a particular TYPE of file (Word, Excel, PDF) but you can not save files to the program.
