I have a question for the RefuPeas. This is not Penthouse Forum topic, no matter how salacious it may sound. Nor is it an "I hate Walmart" thread. I do not hate Walmart.
No, this is just a general question about the meat department practices at Walmart.
I do not always purchase meat at Walmart, but when I do, I appreciate the way it's packaged in increments of pound-plus-one-tenth-of-a-pound. For instance, instead of 1 pound of ground chuck, it's 1.1 pounds of ground chuck. Instead of 5 pounds, it's 5.5 pounds of ground chuck. And so on. I like this, because I like to feel that I am being generous to my family when I fix Hamburger Helper with *extra meat*. Not a ton of extra meat, mind you, but *extra* nonetheless. I buy a 5.5-pound of beef, divide it into 1.1-pound portions, and freeze that meat for later use. Yeah, man, my meat is large and in charge!
(Somehow, this really is sounding a little bit like a Penthouse Forum letter. Not sure how I feel about that.)
Yesterday, after an emergency dash to a town in which I do not live to winterize my deceased sister's house before the frigid air moved in and froze the vulnerable water pipes, I stopped at a strange Walmart where I never regularly shop and purchased some (surprise!) ground chuck. I was disheartened to find a package of 1 pound of such. What? I looked around. 1 pound. 3 pounds. 5 pounds. Where are my beloved little tenths of pounds of *extra meat*?
I'm not planning to stop at a familiar Walmart tonight on the way home, so I thought I would ask the experts, the RefuPeas, people who *know* properly packaged meat when they see it: Has Walmart changed a policy? Are they becoming chintzy with the beef? Are they withholding? Is it me? Have I let myself go? Am I not attractive enough to the meat department overlords that they just won't give me the meat I want? What can I do to improve my meat-procuring endeavors?!
Sigh. Please advise.
Signed, Hungry for *Extra Meat*

I would assume you are paying per pound, so it's not like you were getting anything for free before; you were paying for the .1, .5, etc. Just buy two smaller packs and keep dividing up like you do now.
I have no idea about Walmart meat packaging policy so can't answer from that perspective.

My guess is that your 'overage' packages are done by the butcher at your store. You could easily ask at that store and commend them on a practice you like.

The three Walmarts between work and home at which I do usually purchase food all do the "one tenth over a pound." The one I stopped at last night is way out in the middle of nowhere. I really like the convenience of having just a little more than a pound automatically added to the package. I'll make sure not to stop at the one-pound Walmart any more! Thanks again. --Cricket (a.k.a., "Hungry for Extra Meat")

On the other hand, my Wegmans packages in just under a pound. It always makes me want to buy the giant bulk packages.

according to my personal Walmart expert who is a meat dept mgr - he says that meat packaging varies by Walmart region and that his store used to carry 1, 2.25 and 4.5 lb packages but when the cost of meat increased they switched to 1, 2 and 4 ;b packages for a similar over-all price/package as previously (similar to how ice cream used to be 1/2 gallon and is now smaller). US Walmarts no longer package the meat in-store - the packages are pre-packaged.

Love having a full service meat counter.

The cynic in me says its Walmart's intense study and management of of their demographics.
Wealthier areas they might package a little over, knowing people will buy it, and they can sell more. In lesser income areas they package weights slightly under knowing their shoppers will seek out smaller packages first, leaving the larger ones.

Are you sure you are getting that .1 or is one store weighing the meat and the other is weighing the meat with the tray thus making it .1 more. Just a thought.

Well, for starters, I wouldn't buy meat at Wal Mart.

Just an FYI there are no butchers at Walmart. Every meat comes in already pre packaged and gets a sell by slapped on and put on the shelf.

I haven't ever bought meat at Walmart-only Publix and they sell in increments of pounds, no rounding up or down.

My Walmart only does the pound increments. Kind of a pain, when you have a recipe that needs, say 1 1/2 pounds. I've never seen the "tenth" thing. Maybe it's just something your store does?

Maybe I have never notice...I only buy ground turkey and...well, now that you mention it, you are right, it comes it at whatever weight it is that is whatever it comes to around the pound. I just checked my freezer to see. Dang. Y'all pretend I never said anything and don't know what the hell I am talking about.

My Publix always has weird weights: 1.36, 0.89, 2.73 etc., for meat. But I love that I can always ask for a different size package and Publix will accommodate me <3

Where ever I buy ground beef, it is always in all kinds of different sizes and has been as long as I can remember. I know this because it always annoys me to no end. I'm always saying to anyone who will listen "why can't they just sell it in 454 gm packages?". In Canada we go by grams and I want 454 to 500 grams, not 400 grams. I always end up having to buy up instead of down. But ground turkey on the other hand, I buy the Maple Leaf Prime packages and up until about 6 months ago it was always 500 grams. I just noticed the other day it is now 454 grams, no price reduction, just a smaller package . But hey, at least it is that 1 lb.

I can't speak fo Walmart practices, but at the commissary, meat is always in odd amounts. I assume that it's because it's a butcher and not automated machines packaging the meat. They just take approximately the same amount for each package, but then weigh it to get the actual weight and cost.

Hmmm. I wonder if it's a way to increase their sales figures? I always have this conversation with myself at the deli when I order a pound of turkey, and the clerk inevitably asks "Is a pound and two-tenths okay?" Do they cut more, figuring I'll buy it since it's cut?
