My husband has invited another couple over for dinner on Saturday night. After dinner we want to play board games but it has been a long time since we've done something like that. In the old days we played games like Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, or Taboo. We are looking for something along those lines but I wonder if there is anything new out. My husband had a stroke that has given him some problems with aphasia (he can think of the word he wants to say but can't seem to say it) so I am worried that word games like Taboo might be really frustrating for him. I've looked at Cards Against Humanity and I'm not sure what I think about that. Some song games like Encore look fun but I don't know if I want to subject anyone to my horrible singing. I just need some ideas and thought I might find some helpful recommendations here. Thanks!

How about Apples to Apples? It is the clean version of Cards Against Humanity and a lot of fun!

I got DH a fun card game for Christmas. It is called Chronology. Each card has a historic event on it, and the year the event took place. Each player starts with one card. Then each turn, someone reads you an event, and all you have to do is correctly guess if it happened before or after the event you already have. Then as the game goes on, you gradually build a timeline of events, guessing where each new event falls in relation to the ones you already have.

when we have game night we always play Cranium or Catchphrase the longest. Catchphrase isnt a "board" game, but you pass around the handheld game and it is SO much fun!

Yeah, Apples to Apples is a great game and he won't have think of the words because you use the word cards you have in hand.
Dice board games might be good for him too. Sequence is a good game and so is Sharp Shooters. I don't know if they still make the latter, but it's on eBay.

I played Pit with my family over the holiday, and it was a lot of rowdy fun! You have to "corner the market" on a given commodity (corn, wheat, rice, etc.) Basically, you have to trade other players to get a seven of a kind.

We just got Sequence. Fun and easy! Got the jumbo version on Amazon cause reviews said it was easiest on the eyes. All the neighbors love it.

We love Apples to Apples. Rummikub is a fun one and generally can be found at stores like Target.

I like Apples to Apples but I think it's more fun with a group bigger than 4. Not a board game, but a dice game, LCR (Left, Center, Right) is so much fun! You can get it at Wal Mart, Target, etc.

Another vote for Apples to Apples *but*.... I actually like PicWits better if you can find it in the store. Same exact concept but after playing both, I find the PicWits cards nicer made and the images are funnier.
You might enjoy Logo Party too. Fun concept but the age on the box should be much higher than 8. It's tough and is definitely easier for adults to play.

Two new games this holiday season for us. Chinese Revolution; just like Chinese checkers but the middle of the board spins. You can play regular or with the spin. The second game was Roll For It. A dice game that's a cross between Yahtzee and Texas Holdem. Really good.
Play on ..........

Another vote for Apples to Apples. We played at Christmas with about 8 families and it was a blast. So much laughter! We have also had fun with Headbandz.

Mad Gab is a fun game - www.amazon.com/Mattel-G6850-Mad-Gab/dp/B0009F4YRG You do teams and someone reads a card that has unrelated words but sounds like something else, sometimes a catch phrase and the team has to guess what you are really saying. For instance, the person reading says, “Ice Mail Ask Hunk”. And it is really, "I smell a skunk"

I bought Blokus and Sequence for my kids this Christmas and they have been a big hit for family game night. Other games we like to play are Qwirkle, Mexican Train and Life.
