Yesterday afternoon I managed to really hurt myself by falling down part of the stairs after I stopped and bent down to pick up a cup. I started to slip, but then my legs were way up in the air. I've had a muscle spasm before where my legs came up to waist level then I hit the ground on my back. It happened again. I hit my spine/bottom of my right shoulder blade, then bounced in a seated position on my hip bones/sacrum down the last 4 steps, hitting the edge of each step--thankfully they are carpeted.
I already have degenerative arthritis and broke my sacrum completely off as a teen when I fell off my horse onto a tree stump. I didn't get treatment because my pediatrician couldn't believe that my back could be that injured if I was able to walk around. I just have an extremely high pain tolerance.
The xrays look fine, but I'm not bruised at all!!! I can barely move because of the trauma. The areas where I hit are obvious because they're hot and swollen, but not discolored. Dh looked at my back tonight, and he said that right on my spine where I hit the hardest, he can see dark purple mottling under the skin, really deep, and he thinks I'll be really bruised tomorrow.
I try to look up not bruising on the internet, but there's nothing. All the articles talk about excess bruising.
I've always been an excess bruiser. My inlaws have seen me pop my knuckle because the joints in my hands can hurt, then the whole area turns purple before their eyes. I've walked around with finger marks on my arms from "foreplay" with dh, but with the way I bruise, it looks like dh has hurt me.
I'm going to call my general physician tomorrow and make an appointment to see him. I already have some blood work that he has ordered for me that I hadn't done yet because I had a flare of acute pancreatitis right before dh and I went to my inlaws for Christmas.
We just got back into town Monday morning at 2am. I slept on Tues and went to dh's pain doctor on Wed. I was so excited to call my mom on Thurs afternoon because dh's doctor prescribed a new migraine medication and was sending dh to a special urologist who was going to take over dh's treatment for low testosterone. The pain doctor didn't realize that even with treatment for the past 3 years, dh's testosterone levels were still almost non existent.
I am not taking any NSAIDS or aspirin (I got bleeding ulcers before) nor am I on any blood thinners. (I have a genetic mutation and can't keep a therapeutic level--I'm usually too high 6-9, yes 9) I tried Xaralto instead of Coumadin/Warfarin, but I felt like someone was beating my abdomen--my muscles would get all tense and sore like I had been beaten. I was in so much pain I couldn't move, so I stopped taking it.
My vitamin D level has been low. My gp was going to put me back on prescription vitamin D but wanted to check my levels first.
I didn't like my hematologist, so I'm looking for another one. I've just never heard of not bruising, and figured that there would be a pea that knew about this weird condition. I'm not using the peas for diagnoses, but info I've learned from the peas has been very useful in the past when trying to figure out how to treat some of my issues.

You poor thing, it sounds like a horrible tumble.
I don't think not bruising is something to be really concerned about. I bruise pretty easily but have had times where I have had major trauma to an area that didn't bruise much at all. I had a major haemotoma in my knee when I was pregnant and it was so sore and my specialist said it was bruised right down to the bone but there wasn't much visible bruising.
I hope you are OK.

Im on a blood thinner and it causes me to bruise at the drop of a hat, so my first thought is maybe your blood is thick, as in your protime numbers are pretty low??
but for the record I have had bruising take longer to show up before than one would think----and then it often leads to the "oh where did that one come from" mentality because I have by that time forgotten what caused it.
anyway.hope you figure something out,and hope you arent too sore from that fall!!

I'm doing ok, just taking it easy. I've been so saddened to read about the trials so many other peas are going through now. I am very thankful that my injuries weren't worse.
Dh and I are not going to renew the lease on our townhouse. We're going to find a one story house or move to an apartment complex that has an elevator--we're thinking about downsizing a bit. I'm so thankful that in the two years we've lived here, that this is the first time I've fallen.
I was definitely thinking that maybe my blood is too thick. Even the spot on my arm where they gave me a shot in the ER hasn't bruised. This is just so unlike me.
Since I need to have blood work done already, I am going to check with my gp to see if he wants to order any other tests just to make sure everything is ok.
I think it is amazing that the EMS woman also has MS and had been to the doctor I have been referred to and gave me some great advice. A really good friend of mine that lives in Finland was just diagnosed with MS this past year. Dh and I just saw him at Christmas, and he was telling us about how aggressive MS is treated in Finland. The EMS woman gave me the name of a MS specialist that used cutting edge treatments and only used steroids for the shortest amount of time necessary during a flare. I'm so thankful that I met her because she saved me months of aggravation having to deal with a MS specialist who has a huge ego and terrible bedside manner.

Sometimes if I have a Nast accident and really injur a bone or something deep inside, it will take a few days for the bruise to appear at the surface of my skin. And then the bruise will stick around for a few months.
I wouldn't worry about a bruise not showing up right away.

No advice, but feel better. I'm glad you weren't hurt worse. Accidents/falling is one of my biggest fears (due to existing back problems).

I'm so sorry you took such a bad fall. I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt. Get your rest and follow doctors orders.
Over the summer, I took a bad tumble down one of those crazy slides that are 5 stories high in the St Louis City Museum. Months later and I still get neck pain if I move a certain way. But the weird thing is, I did not get any bruises. And the way I banged around inside that slide, it's hard to believe that I didn't have bruises. Actually, I'm lucky I didn't break my neck.

I really thought I had broken my back. I was also scared because I couldn't tell that I had seriously broken my sacrum as a teen, so I had no way of knowing what damage I did this time.
I'm glad that not bruising can be normal for what happened. I'm just so used to bruising all the time that this is unusual. It is very obvious I did bang myself up really badly because I have hard lumps visible where I hit the steps.
Falling is very scary. I already have so many issues with my back and paralysis. If I bend over and move wrong, I can no longer feel my leg(s) and have to rest in bed until I improve. If I twist wrong, my arms will fall asleep. I also get annoying muscle spasms.
I did so much with my niece and nephews at Christmas and felt great. I paid for it afterwards with muscle spasms. I feel like I've tensed up all my muscles and can't relax them. I've tried muscle relaxers, but they don't work well for me.

Your muscle tension can be from the stress. You were shaken up by the fall. Give yourself some time. Hopefully you will start to calm down from your scare in the next few days.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your fall. This is just a guess, but is it possible that if you iced the area you would have prevented bruising?

Ouch!! I'm one the bruises really easily too. Most of the time I have no idea where/how I even got them. In November I took a spectacular tumble while trying to avoid knocking down my toddler who had darted out in front of me. I was walking at a fast pace and knew I didn't have time to stop so I did a side step to avoid her and tripped over the hem of my pants (this can happen when you're short LOL). I fell hard, landing on my knee and hands and twisting as I fell to again avoid hurting the little one. I had enough momentum going that I rolled after I landed. It was pretty bad. (Although I probably could have won America's Funniest Home Videos if anyone had been recording it. haha) Anyhow, I was SOOO sore. I figured I'd be black & blue all over. Not one single bruise. It was weird.
Hope you are feeling better soon!

The way I understand it, is that bruises happen when the walls of the blood vessels are damaged (e.g. by cracking or being punctured). If the blood vessel walls remain intact then blood stays inside them where it belongs. If blood escapes from the vessels but there is no break in the skin, then it shows up as a bruise. So no bruise just means you didn’t damage any blood vessels.

Very old thread? Well, for heavens sake, I didn’t notice that all. But I see that the person who revived it is new here and probably doesn’t realise it is better to start a new thread than to bring back one that is years old.

It makes me wonder if it's a new identity for someone who's been here a long time. I can't imagine why someone would bump this up.

I've seen quite a few bumps like this from newly registered members. They usually include a link or endorsement for some product that they feel will "help".

This is a very old thread from 2015, so the original poster possibly won't see your response. Poor you! The deeper the injury, the longer it can take for any bruising to make its way to the surface though. I'm glad you're seeing your doctor - hopefully you'll get some pain relief that will help you while you heal.
