We have been joking about our trip being like the Griswold's family vacation and so far starting out that way. Just minor things until last night when my debit card wouldn't work 3 times. The first time was at the grocery store and didn't think much of it as I was in the line that said "no debit cards". Time #2 at the restaurant but it was storming and our waitress said they had had problems. Of course by then I was in a panic. So for the third attempt I found an ATM and it was declined. The darn thing worked all the way down here. I wouldn't be as concerned if my 15ds hadn't of used my credit card and left it laying on his computer desk 11 hours away. So, just in case it wasn't some computer glich, how hard is it to cash a personal check at a bank out of state??
*update*
I've tried calling the number on the back of the card but automated and basically just to call back during regular business hours. My sister wired me some cash store to store from Walmart- a very easy process. A guy at a gift shop said his debit card didn't work last night after the storm (we are on the East coast) as well as the phone and internet. My bank is switching providers on our debit cards however doesn't go into effect until end of August. We had a similar episode about a month ago and was fixed before I could call and complain. I will be calling the bank first thing in the morning. Thanks to all for the responses. It's been an interesting experience as we all have become so dependent on electronics. I have a friend who never travels with cash. He just goes to the ATM each day and gets out what he needs for the day. Guess he would be starving and/or stranded without gas on this trip!

Call your bank to find out why the card was declined. It could just be a security feature that flags out of town purchases/withdrawals as suspect, and could be easily cleared up with a phone call to have the flag removed.
I think you won't have much luck cashing a check unless it's at a branch of your own bank. In the mean time, can you use a credit card and just pay it off when you get home?

I think your bank has probably blocked your debit card thinking it might be stolen since it is being used out of the area you normally use it in. Call the phone number on your card, they'll ask you a bunch of security questions and you can get it cleared up. Happened to me when I tried to make hotel reservations in several states. I understand it's for our protection, but it's a royal pain.

Do you know anyone in the area? You could write a check to them and have them just cash it at their bank. Or find a local branch of your bank.

I tried calling the bank and of course being a Sunday, no answer even on the 1-800 number. Can't use the credit card as my ds left it at home. I'm just in a panic because I can't get in touch with anyone. My next plan is to go to Walmart and write a check to get extra cash lol. I've never had any problems using my debit card when I travel so hopefully will be resolved easily enough.

Chances are good that your bank just blocked it because it's being used out of town (you should always call your bank and CC company and let them know you'll be traveling, and what cities/countries you're going to) That is, of course, presuming you haven't had such a good time that you've drained your bank account ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Buying something at Wal-Mart might work even with an out of state check. I've never tried it so I don't know what their policy is on OOS checks. Good luck, I'll X my fingers for you!

Check and see if there is a branch of your bank in any of the grocery stores where you are. Sometimes a bank in a grocery store will be open on Sunday. I would call your bank fraud department and they can tell you real fast if your card is blocked. Look on the back of your card and see if there is a direct number to the fraud dept. If you use one of the big banks, I would think that you should be able to reach someone. We have had problems before when we traveled. Now we notify them before we go and no more problems.

Keep trying the 1-800 # on the back of your debit card - not the bank's regular number. Somebody should pick up 24/7.

Since the Target debacle, my bank shuts off my debit card every time I travel. The last time I complained about it (because I was in the middle of nowhere needing gas and had no phone signal to call and get it turned back on) and they said they have changed the algorithms because of increasing fraud. I agree with Elaine, keep calling the 1-800 number.

Can you have someone wire you money? Walmart does wire transfers.

I spent over $500 at the commissary WHERE I ALWAYS SHOP, in my home town. My bank declined it and told me it was well above my normal spending amount there. They are really watching fraud.

I work at a large bank. Typically if it isn't your bank, no bank will cash a check from another financial institution. We don't have access to see another financial institutions funds. Ie, Chase can't see what is at an account at Wells Fargo so they won't be able to verify funds. There are check cashing places like Check City, Walmart, etc where you would be able to do it but I don't know what their procedures entail. Call the number on the back of the card. You should be able to reach someone.

Banks typical are not going to cash checks for non-customers. The out of state part doesn't really matter anymore. However, a bank can't verify the funds before cashing the check drawn on a different bank. Since they also have no recourse if the check is bad, since you're not a customer, it's unlikely any bank is going to cash a check for you. If your bank doesn't have a branch local to where you are, you're probably going to have to resort to a check cashing type place. Or maybe Walmart, as you already said.
I agree with those who said call the number on your card.

I'm glad you got the money, but I wondered if you checked your balance online? I would be concerned that something had happened to my balance.
