I love my Cameo but only use designs from their store as I have no idea how to use SVG files from other sources. This is not a problem as I have the minimal subscription and have no trouble using up all my credits.
My whinge?? Some of the designs just do not cut well no matter how many adjustments I make. Some of the borders do not resize to 12" without distortion of their shape. I would imagine that they CAN be designed to fit 12" and still only be 1-2 inches wide?
Some of the layered designs are so tricky to work out which bit is which. I tried to make a Holly, Jolly Christmas title that had a cute reindeer, santa hat and a string of lights. After 15 minutes of trying to work out why there were 3 sections to the reindeer's head I just gave up and chose another design. I wish the designer would show a little coloured or numbered sketch to help people like me!
I tried to make a simple Meow title. I think the letters were too close together as it kept shredding the edges of other letters. I don't think it is a blade, speed or cardstock problem as I have cut out many other things today with no problem.
Grrr.

There are some files that do have a lot of pieces to them but I don't always use all the pieces it comes with. For instance I cut out some clouds that had a bottom dark color (which was a bit larger than the other 2 pieces), a grey color and then a white color.
The idea was that dark bottom larger cloud first, then the grey and last the white with just a smidge cut out of it with some grey poking thru. I eliminated the grey piece and just used two pieces. I just use the pieces I want, not always all the pieces they have.
When I need a visual, I go to the store and click on the design to make it large, then use my snipping tool to cut around it, copy it, then paste it on my mat. I can make that as big as I want so that I can have a example right beside my design. Also if you want to turn a regular cut file into a print and cut, you will need that example to help you fill colors in.

Some files should have never made it into the Store. I wish there was someplace to "rate" a file. I have one that is obviously traced and it was done very poorly. The edges are so jagged there is no way it will cut right. I saw someone post an example of an "infinity - love" design where the word LOVE was in the infinity loop. When you opened up the design - you could actually see a picture of someones wrist with that tattoo on it. They had traced the tattoo off that picture and not removed the picture from the mat before adding it to the store! LOL - - It has since been removed.
I prefer to do print & cut on a lot of the designs that have tons of layers or tiny pieces. I take a "snip" of the design (enlarged view at the Silhouette Design Store) and then I just paste it onto my mat, next to the file. I shut off all the cut lines, except the very outside one, and then fill each area with color by using the eyedropper tool to color match from the snipped image (Snip is a Windows too, you can take a screen shot of your screen, but it allows you to pick what area of the screen you want to "snip")
There is a tutorial on Pinterest on how to do this, and I think the lady who does the Silhouette School blog also did a tutorial on it.
When you are enlarging a border to 12" how are you doing this? Are you entering a value into the the scale window, or are you just dragging it to 12".
SVG files can only be opened and used if you have paid for the Designer Edition of the program. They work exactly the same as Studio files, although some do not have cut lines on them. You can check by opening the Cut Style window (looks like the blade cartridge, on the far right toolbar). If the lines show up dark red - they are on. If not, just select the file and choose "CUT" from the menu to enable the cut lines. You NEVER need to trace a SVG file to get the cut lines.

Corinne That is a Miss Kate Cuttables design. There is always an instruction PDF file included whenever I buy them directly from her site. The file shows each individual layer of the die and how it is layered. I would think that all the same files would be included if you buy MKC designs from the Silhouette store.

Hmmm, as far as I know you don't get the PDF Miss Kate Cuttables when you buy the file from Silhouette. Unless I have not been seeing it .

No -I don't think you do get the PDF with them. I have never had a file that I thought was that hard to figure out though.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I wish there was a rating system, I've bought some definite duds! I am going to try the snipping tool idea. I usually have the store open but that means opening the screen and using my memory to remember which bit goes where!
And yes I do just drag the border, never even thought of entering the number.
I think I probably need to look up some more video tutorials or take an online class. I still haven't used the print and cut. I found a great tutorial and then I upgraded and the instructions were no longer relevant.

Corinne, you can email Miss Kate Cuttables at support@misskatecuttables.com and ask for help with the design. I'm sure they would be very willing to help you so that you are satisfied with your purchase.

I have had a couple of problem files, but different than the ones described here.
My personal vent about the designs is that in recent months, I have been disappointed in general with the quality of offerings. I am wondering if I was stupid to resubscribe. I usually could wipe out all my credits by the end of the month they were issued, but I still have about $30 left from last month that I am struggling to use.
I have noticed several designs that I could tell at a glance would probably not cut well. I find myself wondering if they test cut the designs before offering them in the store to sell. I suspect that some do not test their designs before posting in the store.
At any rate, I am not particularly happy with many of the new designs these days.

Would it be useful to start a new thread here for people to add comments about problem files? Or files that are really good? So people could just update with reviews as they discover these files?

I have bought a few from the Silhouette store that I could not get to work. They were very complicated with intricate cuts. Now I shy away from the ones that are too detailed.

I also wish there was a way to rate designs in the store. I love your idea of having a thread listing problem designs. It would be nice to have a spot listing files difficult to cut or better suited for print & cut.

I also wish there was a rate the design feature. There are several that I don't feel are worth the $.99 (LOL). My best advice would be to watch the "Tracing Without Tears" videos on Youtube and learn to trace. I trace so many cool things for my projects!!! It really is freeing to trace and create your own files.
