dentists?? Since turning 18 this past summer, I've had my DD start handling her own medical and dental appointments and she came home from the dentist yesterday with a RX for Fluoride Toothpaste (1.1%NaF 5000ppm). Something about grey or dark shadows/spots on her x-rays. The dentist sells the toothpaste for $10 and of Safeway pharmacy sells the same item for $30. I'm just wondering if this is one of those things that doctors are moving towards--selling supplements and products. Does my DD really need this type of toothpaste??
Without having heard the information directly from the dentist, I can't really determine. Now, my DD is wanting me to go with her back to the dentist to buy the toothpaste and ask more about what is going on but I feel that even though I want to do that, that that is a step back in letting her mature and be responsible for her own health?? What to do???

I think it is always a good idea to get a second opinion on anything that is medical or dental. I would encourage my daughter to do just that if she is in doubt.

Not a fluoride toothpaste but a fluoride rinse - Prevident, I think. It's not uncommon

I think at 18, and if she's asking for your help, your daughter's telling you she's not ready to give up having you as her back up. I don't see anything wrong with that. Help her out.
As for the toothpaste, yes, it's a common thing. I was lucky because my hygienist gave me a tube. One tube lasts many months as you use such a tiny amount, and only once a day.

I would go with her. As a parent, I'd be extremely concerned about the health effects of using high fluoride toothpaste (like damaging her thyroid).

I use Prevident toothpaste 3x a week. It's to be used at night only and no rinsing after brushing. I get it directly from my dentist but I have yet to see it show up on a bill so maybe they are just doing me a courtesy. I wont complain because I really don't want to pay $30 for toothpaste!

I had this prescribed but it is because since moving here where the water isn't fluoridated I have had a lot more cavities. It's helpful.

Does she get fluoride trays at her regular appts? If not, she should be using a special tooth paste 2-3 times per week.
I used to use a rinse every evening, but the rinse was too hard on my gums. My dentist recommended the tooth paste and now I use that.
If she has dark spots, it means she has cavities in the way and the dentist is hoping to prevent them. Or she has crevices in her teeth that could be prone to cavities.
Paige.
Eta - I wouldn't worry about thyroid function and this tooth paste. You spit the tooth paste out. That is. Ore related to fluoride in water.

I've used it for years. Just priced it at Costco and was quoted only $6 a tube, so that's where I'll be buying it from now on. My dentist has never sold it but I would have loved to buy it from him for $10. I've been paying $15-$16 a tube at the local pharmacies.

DH was prescribed one to build his enamel. He has very soft teeth. It was $16 through the dentist. 3M Clinpro. 1.% flouride as well as tri-calcium phosphate. He had to have 12 small cavities filled and two root canals done following his last cleaning. And he does brush regularly.

My daughter and I both use fluoridex, which is a fluoride based toothpaste. We were instructed to use it at bedtime only. It costs about $12 a tube. I haven't priced it elsewhere, we just pick it up when were in the area.
