Does anyone have the canon 24mm f2.8 STM lens? If so, what are your thoughts? Do you use it to take pictures inside? If so, can you get more of the room in the pictures than say with a 50mm lens? I feel like the answer is yes, but I want to make sure before I pull the trigger on buying this little baby!

I do not have that particular lens, but yes, a 24mm lens will give you a wider field of view than a 50mm lens. The higher the number of the focal length, the further its 'reach' essentially. Is the 50mm the only lens you have currently? The 18-55mm that comes as the kit lens with entry level Canons is considered a wide angle lens, as is the 24-105mm that comes with full-frame Canons. I am guessing you have a crop body camera. 24mm is not quite as wide on a crop body as it is on full frame. It will still be a useful focal length for taking photos indoors in most rooms though. The f/2.8 does not give as narrow a depth of field as a 50mm 1.8 (or 60mm 1.4, not sure which one you have) but is still a decent low light aperture.

I have the 28 1.8 on a crop sensor and it is by far my most used inside lens. I personally wouldn't get much use out of a 2.8 inside because we don't have a lot of nartural light, but I like the width of the 28 a lot for inside and portraits.

Thanks guys. . I think I'm going to get it. Heartcat, I have the 50D, so yes a cropped sensor. My kit lens is a 28-135mm, which is why I was thinking this one would be slightly wider. I also have a zoom and the 85. . I love lenses. . I'd like to go wider, but there are budgetary constraints affecting my decision as we'll.

I am thinking about getting it for inside use. I have the 50mm STM, but I think that the 24mm will work better for inside the house. Did you get the STM version? If you did get it, how do you like it?

Hi there. I did get it! Here's the link lensI am happy with the lens. I get way more of the room/background in my picture which is nice sometimes compared to the 50. I am happy with the focus on it. I haven't played a lot with the lens in really low light yet. I was surprised with how close you have to get to take pictures of some things! I shouldn't be, but I guess I'm just used to my 50 and 85 where you don't need to be so close.

The 50mm is hard to use in the house and I think that the 24mm will be perfect.

I bought the 24mm almost a year ago because I found my 50mm wasn't working for me in the house on my crop sensor camera. I absolutely LOVE the 24mm. I haven't used the 50mm since I got it!
