Was picking up a few things last at the local grocery store and saw a husband/wife with two younger boys. Mom had bag of grapes in hand while dad pushed carriage, boys walking. So I saw her give one of the boys a couple grapes, ok so what, we've all done that at some point or other. Fine. But then she eats a couple grapes and zips the bag shut. Great you think. But then I watch her walking back up the fruit row and I just stopped for some reason and watched her .......put the bag back and not buy them. We weren't quite half a row from each other but I did yell to her "what a piece of work you are" and walked away disgusted.
I would have loved to have said more but in today's day one has to think twice. I always wondered about when you see an apple core in the middle of a row or an open bag of cookies. Apparently i know what one of those pieces of crap people look like.

Ew! My dad sees ladies do that at his grocery store, too. He said sometimes they eat half a grape and then put it back in the bag and leave the bag for someone else to buy.

My brother is a cashier at a grocery store. Most of the time he says that people who eat produce while they shop will ask to be charged for the item they ate. So if they ate an apple out of their bag of apples my brother will charge them for whatever is in the bag and then take out one apple and charge them again.
But he also says there are plenty of people who just eat whatever they want and don't say a word. Just the other day he had a woman in his line who had a bag of tangerines and her cart had three or four peels in it. And she never brought up eating them. Unfortunately he can't say anything accusatory like "Did you eat those tangerines?" He can say leading statements but if the customer doesn't cop to eating the produce there isn't a whole lot he can do.

Yeah, I saw a woman get a coke from the soda dispenser near the sandwich counter at Raley's the other day. I passed her several times in the store and as I was waiting to check out I saw her dump the cup in the trash before walking to check-out.

Unbelievable! I just want to throttle those people and say, "Is this yours? Did you pay for it?!" It seems like every time I go to the store, I see someone with a child in their cart, opening up a package of goldfish or crackers or chips that they just plucked from the grocery store shelf and blithely handing it to the kid for their snack. WTF?!? Until you buy it, it is the property of the grocery store! Seriously hate the entitlement mentality that seems to be everywhere these days. Lady, your kid can make it through the grocery store without a snack!!

I once said to a woman (likely in her late 50s/early 60s) who was eating grape after grape after grape in the produce section of Wegmans, "The grapes here are sold by the pound." Normally I would never think of calling someone out like this, but she was being so blatant and obvious, plus this is one of the reasons produce prices are so freaking high!
She said, "I know" and kept eating them. I couldn't believe my eyes. I said to her, "You know that's stealing, right?" She smirked at me, popped another grape and said, "I know". I was freaking blown away by her arrogance and wanted to ram my cart into the back of her heels.
I then raised my voice a bit and said, "Stealing is wrong!", gave her a crazy look and walked away.
WTF??? She acted like she was entitled to sample (an excessive amount as well) the produce without paying for it and it was the most natural thing in the world for her to do.

What I hate the most is seeing people chowing down on deli foods while they are shopping, I mean things like wings and pieces of chicken, and then setting the container down when it's empty.

It's galling that we all pay extra to cover this theft. Even the stores that are really vigilant- we still pay because security had to be factored into the prices we pay! My other pet hate is seeing kids sitting and standing in carts. No, I don't want to put my bread etc down into the bottom where a babies bottom ( even when wearing a nappy) or dirty kids shoes have been!

Lady, your kid can make it through the grocery store without a snack!! I agree with you. But at least the package of crackers or cookies has a UPC that can be scanned so the person can be charged for the whole package. (Assuming that they give the cashier the open/empty package to scan and don't ditch it somewhere along the way.) The thing with produce is that it's usually sold by weight and when the person has already EATEN it, how is the clerk supposed to know what it weighed in order to charge the person for it? It's shoplifting! Sheesh. I owned a retail store so I am particularly annoyed by people who seem to think it's okay to steal. It was very eye opening at inventory time to see exactly how much stuff walked off by itself over the course of the previous year. I feed my kid before we go to the store (heck, DH and I feed OURSELVES first to cut down on impulse shopping, LOL), and on the rare occasion when I can't I have a couple packs of fruit snacks or a chewy granola bar in my purse that I can give to my kid in the car. It's so much better to try to set DD up for success before we even leave for the store, it makes for a much more pleasant shopping situation for everyone and a LOT less begging going through the store for stuff I don't want to buy.

Who eats in a grocery store? I don't understand that. You didn't pay for it yet, you don't own it. You don't eat it. That goes with opening a box of cookies etc.

What a cheek! Did she say anything back to you? I'm not a confrontational person but one day I saw a mother and daughter, and the daughter took the lid off a can of body spray, spray it - obviously decided she didn't like the scent - and put it back on the shelf. I said "Are you going to buy that now?" They both just walked off.

Conversely I never really wanted to put my *child* in a cart where people's raw meats and cat foods and other craziness, but what choice does one have? Can't really shop and carry a little one on your hip... I don't have little ones anymore but my nephew, who is 1, sits in the kart, inside a padded fabric seat liner that my SIL carries w her to the grocery and washes after each trip. I so would have embraced this idea when I had little ones.

My friend's daughter got arrested for eating chicken from the deli. Her and her friend got 10 days in County lock up. The judge decided to make an example out of them. If more places did this it would not be as prevalent.

I'll admit to sneaking a grape or two into my mouth. From the box of grapes I am paying for of course! I have also on occasion opened up juiceboxes for the kids, and packets for cookies so that the kids could snack on them while we are in the shop. But of course, I will PAY for this food! I have several times handed empty juiceboxes to the cashier and kindly asked if he/she could charge me for them and then throw them out for me.
The kids were younger, and grocery shopping happened at that awful time right after picking them up from daycare and before they had dinner, so I'd give them a snack while in the shop.
The people eating food and NOT paying for it is straight up stealing!

WTF?!? Until you buy it, it is the property of the grocery store! Seriously hate the entitlement mentality that seems to be everywhere these days. Lady, your kid can make it through the grocery store without a snack!! I have no issues with feeding my kid a cheese stick in the store from one of those 3-packs if needed. It hasn't happened in a couple of years but when she was 2 and had little to no idea of time or waiting and going through one of her growth spurts, I could have seriously fed her before and she would have plowed through every snack I had in my bag and she would still be crying that she was hungry. And ate a big lunch when we got home. Those cheese sticks saved my sanity and I kept the wrapper UPC and paid the $1.50 every single time. And I always said very loudly, "Let me have that wrapper with the barcode so we can pay for it when we leave" to relieve those people around me who were clutching their pearls. I occasionally take a swig from my soda bottle while I am waiting my turn in the checkout line too. *gasp* But yes the people who consume food and intentionally do not pay for it is ridiculous. As are the people who grab something from the fridge/freezer section and leave it on a shelf in non-refrigerated section. I've even heard of store stockers finding used pregnancy tests on the shelves. That's gross.

I have no problem with someone giving their kid a box of animal crackers or whatever and then paying for them on the way out. But I do take issue with those who think the rules just don't apply to them.

Personally I do not think it is wrong to sample a grape or two before you buy it. I think the produce manager would agree with me. In fact, I used to be a produce manager many years ago. I am sure the majority of produce managers are happy to let you sample anything. Better to have you sample and buy a product you are happy with, than to have you purchase something and then be unhappy with that is less than satisfying. So to play devil's advocate...she gave a couple grapes to her son and then tried a couple herself. She then returned them to the fruit section instead of just randomly putting them down anywhere. Sounds to me like she didn't think they were any good so she put them back in the fruit section. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Have you ever had a good grape? They are delicious! If those grapes were any good I find it hard to believe she would have just eaten a couple and put them back. Julie

I have one grape to taste. I'm not going to pay almost $4 per pound for sour or tasteless grapes that I'll just end out tossing in the garbage.

Wegmans has scales and printers near their produce and bulk bins so you weigh and label your items as you choose them. So if you put 5 cookies in a bag, the sticker reflects the price of those 5 cookies even if you eat them all.
So when DS #1 was little, I used to do just that. Then we'd pay for the empty bag.
One day we were at a local store that also had bulk cookies, but didn't have that kind of system and DS asked if he could have some. I bagged up a few and put them in the cart. he clarified that he wanted one then, and I explained that we could only do that at Wegmans.
Unbeknownst to me, an older woman was nearby and heard him asking. She comes closer to us and says to me "Oh, just let him have them. No one will ever know."
I was dumbfounded. I'm thinking "Seriously? You seriously just told a 3 year old that's it's fine to steal some cookies if you want them??". I mean, I know people pull stuff like that, but to come up to a kid and tell them it's okay to do so seemed a step worse to me for some reason. I was pretty speechless.

Around here, we just squeeze a grape or two. My kids want their grapes to be like little freaking rocks. I wouldn't want to taste them because I think they're kind of yucky before they are washed.

I drink water. I walk around the store drinking water. At the check out I just say here's my empty bottle. Just charge me for it. They smile and say sure, no problem. They know me at the store I shop at and they are cool with it. I mean I handed the bottle to the cashier and asked to be charged. Everyone was happy. Eating fruit at the store only happens if the grocery manager shares with me.

Thread steal:
My son once ate the tops off if all the broccoli I was buying, as I was putting the stuff on the belt.
I was mortified and still was going to buy the stems, But the PIC was very nice, went back got me new broccoli and threw the nude broccoli away.
After that the broccoli was the first thing out of the cart.

I am a one grape eater too. Can't stand sour grapes. I have had produce guys tell me that it's ok and that they would rather have us do that than buy something we won't enjoy. Jen

Am I the only one that thinks it is gross?? Grapes are so, so dirty!! Well, considering my coworker once found a spider in her grapes when she got them home, yes. Grapes are dirty.

I am guilty of opening boxes of tissues. I have sinus issues and several times I have gotten in the store and needed a tissue but didn't have one. I have bought more boxes of tissues because I needed them at the time than I care to think about. Funny thing is the cashier usually tells me that my tissue box is open. I will take my chances with the fruit though, I buy it and try it at home, after cleaning it. I don't blame those who taste one to see if they are good though.
