When we were on vacation a few months ago I accidentally left my camera bag behind our rental car and it got run over. It appears that the only damage was to the lens, but I discovered last night that the holder to slide the external flash into is bent and can't be used. When we got home I took it into the shop thinking they could look it over to make sure it was still working properly, which they think it is. I made a comment to the shop owner that the pictures I took on my iPhone had so much more color in them then the pictures I took with my 8-9 year old Canon Rebel. He said it was due to the more recent technology that is in the iPhones. I am wondering now based on the damage to the camera and the loss of color, if it is time now to buy a new camera.
Any thoughts.

I think 8 years is a pretty good run on anything electronic. So, if your budget can afford it you probably would be happy with an upgrade.

So much has changed in cameras since you purchased yours 8 years ago. I think an upgrade is due - plus new cameras are always fun

I have convinced myself to get a new camera. Now I just need to figure out whether to go with a Nikon 3300 or another Canon Rebel. If my external flash works with the Nikon, that is the route I would like to go.

I swapped out my nearly 10 year old Rebel XS (baseline model) for a brand-spanking new Canon 60D. OMG what a difference. I was actually shocked by the difference in both quality, features and pictures. I highly recommend the 60D if you're sticking with canon, and since it sounds like you'll be getting a new lens to replace the broken one, the kit 18-135 STM lens is a dream!

I ended up buying the Nikon 3300 and I love it. I can't believe the difference. Not only are the colors so much brighter, but I can actually take non-blurry action shots of my daughter playing indoor basketball.
