Okay, people will think I am insane, but I am wanting to buy my just turned 11 year old daughter a set of Copic markers. She is extremely artistic and would spend all day drawing if we let her. Santa brought her two sets of Faber Castell Manga Pens (black/grey and small coloured set) and she has been using them every day since. She has, however, requested more colours and the ability to blend colours. So you can see where this is going...she wants Copics. Today was her birthday and she received some money from Grandma and she also has money left over from Christmas and previous gifts. This child really never asks for anything except for art supplies, books and the occasional doll. She is all about art and drawing and has been since she could hold a pen or a paintbrush. So, we want to get her a set something like this : Manga Wallet B which I can't find in Australia, but I can get her those colours which she "oooohed" and "Ahhhhed" over for a full five minutes before saying they would suit her purposes perfectly. My questions: 1) Do I need to get her special blending paper? She isn't a stamper, she will be drawing her own outlines in permanent fine liner and colouring them with the Copics. She usually draws on 200 gram art paper, would that be okay? 2) Should we get her a wallet to store them in? Is this people's preferred method to store them? She can't keep them out on a desk or anything due to younger brother and sister. 3) Any good You Tube gurus you recommend? She is itching to start watching videos on how to best use them? 4) Anything else I need to know?

I've inserted a link to Marianne Walker's blog. She is the person that has brought Copic's into the crafting world. I've taken classes from her using Copics. I don't know that I'd get these for an 11 year old. There are other markers out there that will blend that are less expensive. Now saying that, Copic's are refillable and you can purchase replacement tips. I wouldn't get a kit. You need markers that are 2 numbers away from each other to get them to blend correctly. Explore Copic's site too. They have kits that they've put together. Don't discount purchasing grays if you get these. I have them and love them. I have all of the Sketch but the florescent ones. I also have their air brush system, but I'm not 11 either. Copic also has classes, although I don't know if they allow young children to attend. Paper--I use Neenah and Copic has pens. Copic does have paper too, although I've found Neenah to be fine for me. The pens that they have are what Marianne uses to draw with, then colors the images. She is a fantastic artist. I Like Markers

Thanks for the link CeeScraps. I totally realize that a lot of people would think we could just get her less expensive markers, but I am a firm believer in buying good quality items if you are going to use them often. And she will, this isn't a phase for her. I know there are pens like Spectrum Noir, but honestly, are any of the pens as good as Copic? Are they refillable, can you replace the nibs? Also, this is mostly her money she is spending. My husband I and said we would kick in a bit extra so she could get a decent number of pens to start her collection. Good info about buying shade 2 apart so they can be blended. The set I linked I noticed came in pairs of colours that were generally 2 numbers apart as well. It also had some earth tones and greys/neutrals, I think. I will take a look at the kits you suggested as well, thanks!

Ok my opinion for what it is worth. You know what your daughter's artistic ability is better than anyone. If you think she would benefit from the investment, then that would be what I would do. They aren't cheap but you know that. She may have a career as a graphic artist. I had a boyfriend eons ago and his mother said that is what she thought her son would do for a career. That is what he did. He and his wife have a business doing just that. Getting her started now just makes sense. If she was musical, you would invest in a piano or cello or violin, right? How is this different? Just food for thought.

My daughters BFF is 11, and has been accumulating copics for almost a year. She spends every bit of $$ she gets on them. My experience (because I guided her through the process, her mom isn't crafty!): - she uses them a LOT, and it seems like a good purchase so far - she buys the ciaos so she can afford more colours. Honestly, given that they are refillable, I think this is the way to go for a child. - Yes, I recommend some sort of copic paper or neenah white CS - regular paper is useless with copics. - I would recommend letting her pick her colours and not go with a set. Seija (child I'm involved with) KNEW what she wanted to create and what colours to start with. They would not have been my picks. Seija gets a lot of inspiration from online manga art. She wanted blue hair After she got those first colours, she started to fill in her skin tone copics: again, not what I'm using in my scrapping/stamping! Have fun!

I say go for it! Any hobby that a child is passionate about will cost money - art, sports, collecting, etc... This isn't her first time ever using markers, and every artist knows what 'perfect' is to them... If Copics are her 'perfect' then there's so much she will get out of them... If they're not quite 'perfect' for her, then she's learned another media, and they're certainly excellent quality for her to use until they run out... Really though, Copics are pretty perfect for everybody - illustration, colouring, Manga, industrial design, interior designers, etc... They're such a staple that even if in time she goes on to prefect paint or other media, the skills she learns about how to use them will help her...
As far as paper goes, I've used a high quality cardstock (especially when colouring digital images), and various illustration papers... She'll have her own preference... She seems to pay a lot of attention and likes to learn about products before using them so I'd say let her help you choose the type of paper too... If you have an art store, even a basic one nearby, go in there and let her feel the weight and tooth of different papers... Some shops even sell papers by the sheet or in sample packs... That way she can try a bunch out and see which ones she likes best... To start out though, any of the commonly recommended papers will give her a chance to start trying things out... I have a pack of X-Press It Blending Card and I like it... I don't know the name of the cardstock I buy because I get it loose at the office supply place near me...
My dad would always say not to go too cheap on something you are seriously considering... If you go really cheap, you're not sure if you didn't like it because it's not your thing or if you bought inferior equipment and that's what made it unenjoyable...
I was a child that was involved in art and was lucky to have parent that would buy me a $40 paintbrush for my birthday... The opportunity to push your skills as you have access to better tools is one of the things I loved about art - I was always learning and progressing...

I have no knowledge about copics but I agree with those who said that it's worth getting quality equipment for her if she's ready for it. And if she's willing to spend her own money on them? then SHE thinks the expense is worth it and will probably be even more careful with them than if they were bought for her.
I wouldn't buy expensive art supplies (or sports equipment or musical instruments or...) for an 11 y/o who is dabbling in this and that and hasn't shown much interest or passion in the past but for a child who is clearly invested in the hobby and knows what she needs - yes, if I could afford it, I would

If it is not a phase that she is going through, then I would get what would make her happy and work in the long run. My DD loves to paint. But she uses acrylics and canvases. She gets the canvas when it is on sale. She will also spray them white and reuse them. I don't mind buying her supplies at all. It is calming and therapy for her.
Now, will someone please tell me the difference between the sketch and the ciao markers? I have a few of the basics but I want to up my stash a bit. What I have now are the sketch markers.

- same marker ends - 1 brush, 1 chisel - same ink, but fewer colour choices with the ciaos - ciao barrel is round rather than oval. I actually prefer the feel although some say the oval barrel is nice because it doesn't roll. - ciao does NOT have the colour number visible on the lid - ciao contains less ink than sketch, but is refillable just like the sketch - ciao is about 1/2 the price

Ciao: less pricey, hold less ink, but refillable, less colors (but you can mix with the sketch), are round vs oval, and do not have the color name on the end like the sketch markers. Sketch markers: well, you are familiar with them, but they come in the full spectrum of Copic colors. ETA: Oops! I should have refreshed

Thanks, furryp and kitbop!! I am looking through my colors and checking out some of Nichol Magouirk's colorings and grabbing some of those. Joanns has the markers on sale so taking advantage of that.

People get six-year-old girls $100+ American Girl dolls all the time. I don't think buying Copics for an 11-year-old is outlandish at all. I would do it (or share mine) for my 12-year-old if she were into that sort of thing.
I almost always buy mine in trios of the same color family that will blend.

I think it is an excellent use of her birthday money. I also think books and art supplies make the best gifts!

My sister got a $5000 piano to use (a long time ago...). This is cheap in comparison. Especially if this becomes her career.
I think it's a good investment...if she is an artist then she is.

I'd suggest getting them on sale/with a coupon at Joann or HL, so you can get a better price and pick specific colors she might want. Or check out Dick Blic or Jerry's Artorama online- you may be able to get them cheaper there. There are a lot of great videos on youtube that show different techniques with copics, too.
DD#1 got BFA in Graphic Design and is in grad school now for an MFA in Sequential Art, so she uses markers all. the. time. She bought a few copics at our Archiver's when it was going out of business, but she uses other brands that she likes better. I'd go check to see what they are, but the ones she likes are at school in Savannah with her, not at home in CO.
ETA- If you know specific colors to add to her collection, the pens make great birthday or Christmas gifts from family and friends and don't cost too much when buying just a couple at a time.
ETA again- DD had to use the regular markers that we had and could afford while she was growing up (she's been drawing since she was a toddler), and it never hindered her ability or interest.

Hi everyone, thanks for helping me out with all of your suggestions. I agree with Delta Dawn and some of the rest of you, people spend a fortune on dolls, musical instruments or what have you for their kids and no on thinks it is strange. Really all she wants is art supplies. So why not? kitbop thanks for the idea re: the Ciaos and mixing them with Sketch, that is what we have done. She draws mostly animals, mythical creatures, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic characters and lots of manga inspired stuff, so she sounds similar to your daughter's friend. I am pretty sure she will spend all her money from now on pens lol. As I am in Australia we do not have Joanne's or Hobby Lobby etc. I did find a couple of online stores that I regularly buy craft supplies from (so I know they are legit) selling the Copics for decent prices. I have purchased her 24 markers (mostly Ciao with a few sketch if Ciao weren't available), a blending pen, a wallet to store them (36 so she can stick more in as she grows her collection) and a blending journal. I basically created a set from one that copic has on their site, so the colours should work together. She was so thrilled! She keeps asking me when they will arrive. Worth every penny if it makes her this happy. Thanks again everyone. I will update when they arrive.

Carpediemstore.com has them routinely for 5.24 with frees flipping at some point. Although when I gave ordered I was actually charged 4 something a piece... Good service, too!!
Also copic web site has an inventory to keep track of your markers online.
Look on Pinterest for some great copic storage ideas

My niece just turned 13 this past weekend and spends all her free time either reading or drawing manga characters. Copics was what she asked for! Since I use Copics my SIL put me in charge of her gift. As a family, we purchased 30 sketch markers, Copic mult liners, Copic blending paper, and a storage wallet. I choose color families that match her favorite characters since that is what she's drawing right now. I love that now I know what to get her every year.

Unfortunately, scrapaddie I am in Australia and that site does not ship internationally. Additionally, the Australian dollar is quite low vs the US dollar right now, so it works out best to purchase from Australian sites. The first shipment of pens arrived today and so far she is over the moon with them. My dad wants to send her money for her recent birthday and she wants MORE already! She is wanting to build around the colours she already has, clever girl. travelsoul your niece sounds just like my daughter! I also like the idea that I know a great gift for her at all times now.
