"As a toy designer (sometimes for Barbie) I have to tell you, it's hard coming up with new and novel ideas for Barbie. She's been around for over 55 years! That makes it hard to come up with something that hasn't been done before, so I guess the designers found themselves with nothing but crappy ideas for her this year!"
The above quote from Stefdesign is from another thread. It got me thinking, what Barbies are missing? How could you come up with a new idea?
So, what Barbie would you or your child have liked?
My my dd would have loved a series of sports Barbies. I know they have had some over the years, but not all sports were covered. She would have loved a volleyball Barbie.
I would have have loved a seamstress Barbie with its own mini sewing machine and bolts of fabric.

I thought of another one...
Dd and I both would have loved a waitress Barbie, but not an old fashioned one. A modern waitress like you would see at Chilis or Applebee's.

A modern military set would be neat. That would rock! No Barbie in a skirt. I would want her in combat gear.

Different scientists...a chemist with flasks and beakers...a paleontologist with hammers and brushes and bones...an astronomer with a big telescope and star charts

I've always loved Barbie. When she first came out in the '50's you basically selected one by hair color and each girl used her imagination for her own Barbie. That was when there were lots of outfits to pick from. One doll and lots of clothes/accessories to pick from.

On the legit side Judge, motorcycle officer, corrections officer, contractor with hard hat or plumber/electrician. I never liked or wanted Barbies but my friends had them so I would dress them as street walkers or murder victims. I know sounds this sounds warped but I grew up in the city and read the newspaper from a very young age.

Everything was such higher quality, and the fashion really catches that mod couture. If Ken had a tumbler of iced vodka and a pack of lucky strikes in his briefcase, you could really build a Mad Men tableau.

I like the "normal" size Barbie! She should have made it to the shelves.

I am also a fan of Mad Men and a few years back my son bought me the Joan barbie doll.

Mechanic Barbie. I think they had a mascara Barbie after I grew up, but I would have loved to play with mechanic Barbie. I was always in the garage 'helping' my dad anyway I'm sure he would have enjoyed me playing with that rather than rearranging all his tools to 'help'

Personally, I'd love a "Kill Bill" Barbie. Oh, and a "Pride & Prejudice" Barbie and Ken couple.

It's been a LONG time since Barbie was a Law Enforcement Officer, maybe a Barbie K9 handler? American Humane Society Hero Dog, winner in the Law Enforcement Category, K-9 Kota and his handler Cpl. Brittney Neer from the Winchester VA Police Department.

I was horse mad from a young age and never into dolls. I much prefer the realistic version that artist drew to the real one (link above). But I want a Walking Dead series - crossbow carrying Barbie, katana Barbie, look at the flowers Skipper, eyepatch Ken, old bearded Ken, mullet Ken, and of course - walker Barbie and Ken. haha, I love that.

Animal activist/PETA Barbie, comes with protest signs and a little bucket of red paint.
My Barbie would throw her red paint all over your Barbie.

My first thought was a Barbie with glasses because it was hard for my middle daughter to transition to wearing glasses. She felt like she would be teased.
Barbie with braces. Barbie in a wheel chair. Hearing impaired Barbie. Sight impaired Barbie. Barbie with crutches. Barbie with red hair and freckles.
I'm sure some of these have been done. My 15yo played with Barbie dolls some, but once the Monster High dolls came out she donated her Barbie dolls. My 13yo and 7yo never played with Barbie dolls. Just the Monster High dolls.

I loved playing school so I would have wanted a teacher Barbie with a class full of students. Also, an artist Barbie who makes real stuff. And a grocery store.
My 5 year old DD would probably enjoy a Starbucks Barista Barbie!
