DS18, who is living with his dad, had a breakup with his girlfriend? Or would you just check in "Hey I love you, what's up?"
I heard it from his older sibling, but DS18 hasn't brought it up with me, and didn't tell sibling details. Except I get the idea that the girl broke up with DS18.
The communication dynamics for years has been that I ask general questions, but let them tell me specifics at their own pace.

I would think a general what's up call is good. I get upset when my mother asks me about things that are sensitive rather than waiting for me to bring it up. When I'm ready, I'll talk...but I would never shut down an :I love you, how are you?" call from Mommy or Daddy!

I've always assumed (rightly or wrongly) that a lot of the communication between the brothers (my sons) that in turn gets shared with me, is done that way on purpose. Sometimes they don't want to tell me outright, so they tell their brother then it trickles down to me. If so, I have no trouble saying "hey, I heard from your brother that xxx happened and I just wanted to say that I love you and I am here." It opens the door, but doesn't force the issue.
The things they want to keep between themselves, they do. I never hear about it unless they want me to know. I may hear things from other people, but not those two. They are incredibly close and have no issues with keeping secrets between themselves.

I would treat it differently with each of my sons. Their personalities are so different. Follow you gut.
