UPDATE: I did receive a coupon from Customer Service for the amount of the brokerage fee ($64.95) and used it to order the last dress we needed. It arrived yesterday and I was fully expecting to pay another brokerage fee and nothing. The UPS guy just dropped it and left even though the packing slip states Delivery Duty Unpaid just like the other package did! Either the charge wasn't necessary because the box was significantly lighter or I got lucky. What a great thing for St. Pattys day!
Just venting -
Who knew that when you order bridesmaid dresses on line from JJsHouse.com that your dresses would be shipped from China and UPS would have to collect on delivery for "Brokerage Fees"? No where on the website does it state they are shipping from China - their About Us section doesn't state they are in China? SO - besides the $33.99 we paid for shipping for 3 dresses, the additional fee of $64.96 was tacked on upon delivery. UPS guy said I've heard the guys talk about this but I've never had to deal with one of these before and he apologized! What a sweetie, and cute too, but I digress - I told him it wasn't his fault but that he was going to have to come back tomorrow because I don't carry my checkbook with me and they can only take personal or cashiers check.
I have placed a service ticket and they have 24 hours to get back to me - nothing but great reviews online and on their Facebook page. I guess you live and learn but the pisser is we still have one more matching dress we need to order!
Ok - thanks for listening!

Greater transparency would be nice. I think if you read between the lines (ie, their shipping times, costs, phrasing to all major locations) suggests that they are NOT located in the US. But... the unexpected charges suck.

When you are logged in as a customer the About Us Section is totally different from the one when you first land on their website. The logged in version doesn't mention their location! I had to go back in to look!

Regardless, i think it's crazy to have to pay brokerage fees. I just ordered some stuff from a website that was based in China, but I didn't pay any fees.

#Ashley you are probably right but I don't frequently order anything but Scrapping Supplies online so next time I'll know to look deeper before I order anything.
ETA - maybe I'll get somewhere with my service ticket but I'm not holding my breath!

That's a bummer on the extra fee. It's a good reminder for the rest of us to be extra careful about checking details before we order.

When you entered JJ'sHouse in your browser the menu included the ratings and lists of complaints. I'm sorry that happened but the evidence was available before you ordered.

Well, that really sucks- that's not a small amount!
I ordered a couple items from amazon recently that came from a seller in China. I actually had a second thought after I noticed that on the order confirmation and wondered if there would be fees like this, but there wasn't. The items themselves were dirt cheap and I think the shipping was free, it just took several weeks. It was odd though- I didn't realize when I bought the items they were coming directly from China. And now that I think of it, I had an etsy purchase that was the same deal. I think I should look closer when online shopping, too!

Ok - I see what you mean - we did a search for the type of dress my daughter wanted and went from there - didn't see those either! Geez!

It always sucks to get hit with an unexpected cost like that.
When I'm ordering from somewhere new online, I always check their FAQ to see if there is anything that I might not have thought about asking before putting in the order.
Ask UPS for a breakdown of their Brokerage Fees. They aren't necessarily collecting a Duty or Fee owed to a government agency, but part of it at least will be their fee for processing any import paperwork and brokering the transaction (in addition to the shipping & handling you already paid). It sounds like they are implying the fee is being charged by someone else, but I'd bet most of it is going to UPS.

I think some overseas business purposely make it a little tricky to find out where they are.
I've noticed that on Etsy, anyway. They don't disclose in the main viewing area. You have to hunt around.

It showed up when I googled the store name but by using other search words I can see how you were not aware of the bad rep the company has.

Someone here recently said they ordered a prom dress for their daughter from that site I think but didn't say anything about having extra fees. DDs and DH have ordered stuff online that shipped from China or Hong Kong before but never had any extra fees. Hope you can get the fees reversed! Be sure to leave feedback so others can see it before buying.

Unfortunately it's in their terms and conditions but how many actually read the terms & conditions, not many I wouldn't think. Sorry you had the extra charge that really sucks.

It's most likely because they shipped via ups. I've read about this on the etsy forums, it's a frequent complaint for items shipped from the US abroad if they're shipped via FedEx or ups. USPS doesn't add a brokerage fee.

Thanks for all the comments. After reading all the bad remarks now I'm worried about the shape the dresses will be in once I get the box back tomorrow!

This! It's also happening on Amazon.ca. I never go with a third party and it's last time i ever do. I expect the seller is in Canada unless it tells me otherwise. I had my items shipped from Hong Kong and boy was I surprised when I got the e-mail that mentioned where it was coming from! I went back to their page and you really had to dig to find out where in the world your items were coming from! They had even mentioned shipping was in CANADA on another page.

If the dresses are in bad shape, I would dispute it with your credit card company that the items were not as represented. They are easier to deal with than an overseas company.
I ordered a jersey a few months ago from a company that advertised as being in St Louis and turns out it was in China. Big run around, didn't come for a long time, and my Visa reversed the charges. The company kept emailing me asking me to send money western union.
Hope the dresses aren't bad!

The OP will still be out the money she had to pay to UPS - the possibility of someone reversing credit card charges is the very reason they won't take anything but personal checks or cash for those fees.

Let us know how the dresses are.
A couple of my DD's friends ordered prom dress online that came from China. They looked nothing like the pictures online. Very thin rayon fabric with beads or sequins (very few of those) sewed on with long threads showing.
Hope yours turn out much better!

That is true Elaine - I also thought it was because the UPS driver doesn't have a way to process a credit card. They can't accept cash either. We purchased through our Credit Union Credit Card and I've already contacted them to ask about the process if we have to return them. They put me in touch with the Credit Manager and she is going to look into it for me - asked that I call her back once we decide what we want to do with the purchase.

whoa, thanks for the heads up! after googling them I found 100+ bad reviews and pictures of what people received vs what they thought they ordered and it looks nothing alike. I hope the dress you ordered fits and comes in good condition
