... not just a same-sex family mixed in with lots of other kinds of families, but a cute, youngish woman on the phone with what you think is her husband, telling him about the car she just bought on her own and telling him to come outside and see it ... and it's another cute, youngish woman who comes running out of the house at the end. It was an ad for a Toyota dealership in Oakland. You know for sure they're a married couple because one of the things she says is that it was so easy, she didn't even have to tell them she's married to a lawyer. Bay Area peas, it was on the KTVU 10:00 PM news if you want to try to catch it tomorrow. oh, the times they ARE a-changin'.

I first got sucked into Two Peas by a thread about.........a commercial! Something like 23 pages. Took me days to read. (Gap holiday commercial. I had never heard of the war on Christmas.) We could still stop this now. There's only three of us so far... ETA: Watched it. Nice!

oh, I don't know. If we can manage to turn it into the Gay War on Christmas thread, it could go for days.

Won't it be nice when the reference to gay couple or same sex couple isn't made, they will just be referenced as a couple

Not a bad advert, and I like that different 'types' of family are being represented. Good for them.

Won't it be nice when the reference to gay couple or same sex couple isn't made, they will just be referenced as a couple Exactly! This advert,to me, is making a political statement rather than advertising how good the dealership is and why you should use them rather than another dealership. Which is after all, the whole point of advertising..... The tag line in this advert is " The sale was so transparent that I didn't need to tell them I was married to an attorney" Is it normal for a person, any person, to go into a dealership alone to buy a vehicle and be asked who they're married to? I'm guessing not! Someone, somewhere has thought that adding this line would be a good idea to generate publicity, all for the wrong reasons IMO. Publicity like this often backfires because it gives the anti gay marriage the opportunity to voice the opinion that " it's been shoved down their throats at every opportunity" The advert would have still had the impact of accepting gay marriage as being no different to hetrosexual marriage if they had left that line out and said something like " The transaction was so transparent I hope you didn't mind me closing the deal without consulting you, come out and have a look" kind of thing.

I don't understand the big deal in qualifying couples as gay or straight, so long as we don't put a rank on either one.

I'm guessing not! I don't know if it's different in the UK, but on here, you'll hear many stories about women who go into dealerships, and the first thing they are asked is "Where's your husband?" I've heard people talk about car salesmen who wouldn't even let them sign the paperwork before telling them their husband should be there. So, no, I don't think it's unusual, if your spouse is an attorney, to say "Hey, I'm married to an attorney, so don't pull any crap."

It is interesting that the tagline on the closing image is "really different." I'm sure it is referring to the dealership and how their service is different, but it just jumped out at me as a poor word choice right after that flash of the wife coming out of the house.

This was years ago, but my ex and I had been divorced for about six months and I was in the process of buying a new car. (oddly enough, it was a Toyota.)
They asked the usual "where is your husband" question and I told them I was divorced. THEY CALLED MY EX HUSBAND to ask him if he was okay with me buying the car. He told me later that he was so surprised that he almost fell out of his chair. He told the guy that how he felt had nothing to do with it and that it was up to me. He also told them that he thought them calling was not legal (he is, oddly enough again, an attorney.)
The whole thing was so strange and I left and bought a car elsewhere.

I couldn't say for certain that it never happens as you're dealing with humans and men at that but it wouldn't go down very well if they did. I know quite a few women that wouldn't hesitate to put them in their place with their opinion if any of them said that to them. That is sooooo sexist. Wonder how many women salesperson would ask men if their wife knew that they were buying a lawnmower

The add was terrible. Not because of the sexuality of the couple but for 2 reasons. One it was more an add about their same sex marriage then it was about a car. Second it was so poorly acted. She wasn't having a naturally flowing phone conversation but a one dimensional rehearsed monologue into a phone in a weird peppy voice.
I have always hated adds that sold other things more then their products. Ie: adds that seem to sell sex more then anything.

I think the "married to an attorney" line is in reference to keeping the car dealer on the up and up legally - not about sexuality.
I agree - not well acted, but glad the paradigm is changing. I've seen some interracial couples on tv ads recently, too. It's about time commercials reflected real life.

But "real life" is pretty tied to a person's demographics. I live in an area where you just don't see much other then your white man/woman and no more then 2 kids per family. Now if you drove to the city of course it's more diverse but actually not by much. I would have to drive over 2 hours for real diversity. Not saying it's right/wrong just an observation about real life. I moved here from a large diverse city before anyone thinks I live in the backwoods somewhere and I actually do not.

Country Ham, might I encourage you to ask why you feel your community is not very diverse? I think we only see what we want to see at times, because people who are different from ourselves are all around us, but we don't want to see it. So whenever we find ourselves feeling like there is little diversity, we must ask where are they and why are we not seeing them? And what can we do to bring that diversity out, how can we help people who are different from us become business owners and church planters and school teachers in our own communities? Diversity exists, but we have to choose to see it and embrace it, and we must empower, not only regarding sexuality but also regarding poverty, ethnicity, and the myriad of other social realities. :-)

You'd be guessing really, really wrong. Car dealers are the most brazenly sexist jerks out there. I bought a car two years ago and walked away from a really bad experience at one dealership that was based solely on the fact that I have boobs.

I once had a guy at Home Depot ask for my husband when I went to buy carpet for the entire house. I looked at him, all confused, and said "Why do you need him? I'm the one paying." The guy still wanted my husband, so, on my way out the door, I stopped for a conversation with the store manager, then went across the street to Lowe's with my entire renovation budget. Not that it hurt HD at all, but it was a huge chunk of money - we were getting the house ready to sell.

If it were the EXACT SAME ad except it was a hetero couple, NO ONE would be saying it's more about their marriage than it is about buying a car. Because it's not. It's about how supposedly simple the process is of buying a car at this dealership. I'm not saying it's a GOOD commercial - but really, how many local car dealership commercials are? The acting is stilted and the dialogue is awkward. But that's a totally separate issue.

Yep, I am pretty sure you have never been a woman buying a car. To be honest, with the three vehicles I've leased, I've never been asked that question. I count myself very fortunate because I know a lot of women who have been asked.

This past weekend, I saw a commercial for a hotel I believe with a gay couple who were leaving their kids for the weekend. Darn, now I wish I could remember if it was for a chain or a hotel search site. I was so impressed I missed who it was for I guess!
