Ok, I know this is a stupid question, but I really don't know. We have two friends coming over tomorrow for lunch. DH is going to the local BBQ place to pick up some pulled pork and brisket for the 4 of us for sandwiches. One friend I know prefers brisket, but I don't know about the other. I prefer pork and DH likes either. Would a pound of each be enough?
I imagine we'll each make 1-2 sandwiches but I've never actually bought meat this way. Usually he and I just buy sandwiches and I have no idea how much meat is on there. But they are very full.
I would like enough meat so that there is clearly enough, but not so much that we're eating leftovers all week.
ETA: Thanks! I will go with 1.5 pounds per person, especially since I don't know the type of meat the one friend prefers. DH might be eating some leftovers!

I would go with a half a pound per person. And, I would ask at your local BBQ place what quantity they recommend...ours is really good at knowing how to estimate quantities...for example, if I say that I am having fifteen people over for brisket, beans and mac and cheese, their recommendation almost always nails it right on the head. It is obvious that they know best

I was going to suggest a 1/2 lb per person as well.

I know that around here that wouldn't be enough meat. I couldn't give you an amount to buy. When we make pulled pork we want tons of leftovers. My kids would eat pulled pork at least five times a week if I would let them. Your husband could ask the BBQ place how much they suggest.
Have a great time with your friends.

Sounds good! Get lots, so you have leftovers.

If you are having sides with it, I would start by estimating a half pound per person, so a pound of beef and a pound of pork. If that looks too skimpy, I would add a half pound until it looked about right. I hate the idea of running out when we have people over. You could use leftovers on nachos, baked potatoes, etc. or just freeze it.

One of my bosses does BBQ competitions and catering on the side and recommends 1/2# per person. BBQ freezes wonderfully if you want to buy more to be on the safe side.

I never like to run out so I always err on the side of a little more. I would probably buy 1.5 pounds of each. I know that would be plenty and I would have leftovers but not so much leftover that I was eating it for a week. Also, like another poster said, you can always freeze the leftovers.

I'd go with 1 pound per person.

Although the pound of each would likely be enough, espeically on sandwiches with sides, I would still go with 1.5 lbs of each. Bbq leftovers are yummy. Being short on food is embarrassing!

We usually ask at the place we get the food and they are helpful at telling how much to get. And if we have extra, that's great, we will eat it.

We did the BBQ for 400 people recently, and with 100lbs meat, we had about 15lbs left over. This was a mixture of children, adults, and elderly, so if your group is all big eaters, you can adjust accordingly, but in general 4oz per person should be sufficient. FWIW, we had potato salad, green salad, beans, and cookies to complete the meal - possibly with fewer sides, you'd need more meat.
