We'll be there very late on a Friday night and leave mid-afternoon on Monday. On Sunday, we will be going to a Devils game. (the game is the reason we are going)
I'd like to see the Statue of Liberty, but what else should we do?

Have you been before? Do you want to do the touristy stuff? Since you don't have a lot of time pick your favorite couple of things and try to group them so you're not running back and forth across town. For example, if there's a restaurant you want to go to choose a tourist spot near there for lunch, then do the same for dinner.
Personally, I love the Met, the library, and catching a show on Broadway (buying tickets at the discount booth on Broadway). Ellis island was fantastic too, and you have a great view of the statue of liberty on the way to Ellis.

Circle Line Cruise...Trip around Manhattan. They will show you all the famous sites and buildings. Buy tickets on line. It only lasts a couple of hours And you see and learn a lot. Central park was another of my favorites. We only had 2 days so we had to hurry!

Central Park, the Met, Guggenheim, Broadway Show and the Highline (park on disused railroad) were some of my favourites last time I was there. We also did one of the Grayline hop on hop off tours - although we basically just did a circuit without getting off to get a quick orientation and find our bearings. There's so much to see I agree you should choose 2-3 things that don't require too much travel.
Have a great time!

I agree with the above posters if this is an adults only trip. If you have kids in tow try sticking to the Broadway area and over to Rockerfeller, maybe do Top of the Rock. Relatives did this a few weeks ago and despite the cold the kids loved it. This time of year it may be too cold to do ellis island. I love the Met and it can be done on a budget since the entrance fee is what ever amount you give them as your "donation". We often can only stop in for 2 hours so we do not pay the full suggested entrance donation.

No kids, just DH and I. We may have to add another day. Neither of us has been to the area and I have no idea when we would go back.

9/11 Memorial and museum, then take the subway to ChinaTown for souvenirs. From there walk to Little Italy for dinner.

Circle Line Cruise is great. Ellis Island if you like history and it is right by the Statue of Liberty. Central Park will have a plethora of interesting people to see. See a show on Broadway. Wicked is awesome if you haven't seen it! Just walk down and around Times Square. You might see the Naked Cowboy or a fight or someone peeing in the alley or… or… It is New York City. You will see it all!

You need to add a day. You'll get in on Friday night. You'll have all day Saturday and you are going to the hockey game on Sunday.
If you actually want to go to the Statue of Liberty and not just sail around it or see it from the shore, it takes up a good chunk of time. It always takes more time than I think it will when we bring visitors! Plus, there's Ellis Island to visit as well. It's very cool to see it from the inside, but since you have limited time, you might want to pass on that.

And if we can get tickets to the Alumni game, that will be on Saturday, so there won't be anytime to do stuff that day either. I'm excited for the game, but still...

Depends on what you like to do - museums, shows, shopping, eating, famous landmarks, etc. Where are you staying? I would pick the one or two things that are most important and then plan around that to maximize your time. When are you going? Weather will factor too. I always like walking around (Central Park, Highline, Brooklyn Bridge, etc), but not if the weather is miserable.

We loved the Met, loved walking around Central Park. The Highline, Chelsea Market, Washington Square ... I wish we'd had time to do a food tour and visit the Tenement Museum, but we just ran out of days. We went for the first time in December and I'm dying to go back sans kids. So much to see and do. Have a great time!

That's good. Hopefully better weather! I would also check out the NYC forums on tripadvisor - very useful.

I loved Ellis Island. My great grandparents all came through there and it was AMAZING to walk in the same rooms as they had. We even looked them up on their ship manifest logs and had archival copies made (it helps to know some of this info ahead of time if you want to do this and don't want to spend all day searching). We went right by the Statue of Liberty and didn't feel like we missed much being so close to it! Once you're at the statue there's not much you can do but take pics and walk around. When we were there at least you couldn't go inside (this was a few years after 9/11). Maybe it has changed though.
I'd also eat my way through the city. Ha! And shop.

If you don't want to see the 9/11 Memorial, just walk around the area. Lots of interesting things to see. I love that area of the city. The men walking around the city with sheets have contraband to sell. Lots of purses and glasses. I like just watching them hustle everyone.

Well the tickets for the alumni game on Saturday sold out to the season ticket holders before normal people even got the chance to try to buy them, so we may have all day Saturday to see New York (if I can't find them elsewhere) ,

FYI, I believe Ellis Island is still closed due to damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy. Statute of Liberty has reopened.
