I have 2 students this semester that have severe nut allergies. Both are allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Their allergies are so severe that me having nuts and then touching one of their papers could be a problem. Because of this I have decided to go totally nut free until the semester is over. I don't want to be grading a paper while eating nuts and touch one of their papers. I used to take peanut butter crackers or nuts as a snack to have some more protein to get me through the day. This is now out. I will have to come up with other snacks.

There was just a long thread on peanut free snacks, perhaps that could give you some ideas? Good for you for looking out for your students in this way.

Sunflower seeds?
You can replace your PB with sunflower butter.
There are some great recipes out there like sunflower brittle, sunflower snack bars, etc.

That is awesome of you to do this. I've been nut free (because of my dd's allergies) for almost 20 yrs and haven't missed it. I use sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds instead. Plus wowbutter in place of peanut butter. If you don't want soy, the sunbutter mentioned above is pretty good. There's also golden pea butter.

Good for you.... I am happy that you think that much for you students that you would go without having something you like for their safety.
My mom was highly allergic to macadamia nuts. I remember when she found out and how sick she was. I love them but would not have them when she was around because she was so highly allergic. If I ate them and touched her she could have died she was so allergic.

Oh how I would miss my fiery hot peanuts! It's awesome you're taking an extra step of precaution for your students.

A few semesters ago I had a class with a woman who was highly allergic like this. She said that if we had a PBJ early in the day and came to class she could have a reaction.

I am 100% peanut free. Not by need but by choice. I can't eat them at all so I never have them or touch them. There is peanut butter in the house but I can't eat it. So it sits. I wouldn't buy it again either. (Do I like the stuff? Yes a LOT but I just can't eat it).
Regular nuts (cashews) I would say I have 10 a year? That's not very many. So I think I am about 90% nut free but my house still has nuts in it. If I worked somewhere or DS had a friend who was allergic again (16 years ago he had a friend who was) we would just not eat them or have them in the house. It's not a big thing for us to give up. My dad is happy as long as he has his Spits to eat while watching football/golf/hockey/baseball. DS doesn't eat them.

Does hummus/chick peas make your stomach feel like you have had peanut butter? I don't ever remember eating them but I will avoid it if it's similar.

They are beans. That is why they are also known as garbanzo beans. No relation to nuts. Does he have to avoid all beans? If he isn't allergic to beans in addition to nuts, it may just be that he doesn't like hummus and it is easier to tell people he is allergic to it.

Isn't it the tahini? Oil that triggers the allergy in hummus? I may be both spelling it wrong and totally off base

Peanuts are legumes, same as beans and chickpeas. Maybe he's allergic to peanuts as well as nuts.

Peanuts are legumes, same as beans and chickpeas. Maybe he's allergic to peanuts as well as nuts. Maybe! It is fairly rare to also be allergic to chickpeas however. Something like only 5% of those with a peanut allergy, and then they are usually allergic to peas and other beans as well. Hummus can be a great protein alternative for people allergic to nuts, and for most allergic to peanuts, it would be a shame to have it dismissed summarily.

Just an idea but couldn't you grade their papers and send them a photo/scan of the corrections/grade as needed?
That seems like a lot to go through when they probably don't NEED to get every bit of homework back physically right?

As the parent of a son with a severe nut allergy...thank you so much for taking the precautions and taking it as seriously as it is. Many I have found in my own family do not.

elaine thanks for all the suggestions. I will have to check out the hummus. I could do that easily. I generally avoid all milk based items at school due to some lactose issues that lactaid usually doesn't really help with.

Someone else mentioned Sunflower Seed Butter. My kids really like this as a good pb substitute when I have to pack their lunches for summer camp, which is completely nut and peanut free. That spread on crackers would work too!

I've only known one person with a bit allergy who was also sensitive to sesame seeds.
You could always make your own hummus without tahini. It still tastes good. P.
