Normally, I rent from Avis when I travel for business because that's who our contract is with. I'm a member of their preferred program and have always been happy with my renting experience. I'm also a member of Hertz's program and have been happy so far.
I'm traveling on vacation and want to rent a car but Avis and Hertz are far more expensive than the others. It looks like Dollar, Enterprise, and Alamo are the best deals. I would sign up ahead of time to set my preferences so as not to have to go through all the paperwork and insurance questions.
So, who do you rent from and have you been happy with them?
TIA!

We always book thru Costco and go with whichever company is cheapest. I also check back with Costco to see if the price drops.

I used to use Hertz until we joined Costco and now mostly it's Avis. Sometimes Enterprise if we're not flying, as we can pick the car up a mile from our house instead of at the airport.
We did once rent with Alamo (I think it was) and my DH was not covered to drive the car. Only the renter was covered, unless you paid extra. So no matter who you choose, just make sure that your spouse can also drive the car for free.

We use Enterprise because my brother, his wife, and another sister-in-law were executives there. Now it's habit.

We always use AVIS for business, vacation and road trip travel. Hubby and I have both found its just not worth the grief the other companies seem to give. Any time we have ever rented from anyone else other than Avis, there is always an issue with something. Love the one time we rented from Alamo or Dollar and got a phone call two days after returning the car, questioning when the car would be returned? Never have ANY problems with Avis and no matter what we would do, with any other company, it was never as easy as just walking to the board finding our name and leaving with a car. They all seemed to require a stop at the counter, no matter what program we were signed up with. It just worth it to us and usually we can find plenty of codes or coupons to help with the cost. I have used all three of those. I second the suggestion for checking/reserving thru Costco as you often get much better rates.

We've used Enterprise and Alamo with no problem. Also, I continue to check the prices until we leave. One time, there was a large price drop the day before we left, so I just made a new reservation and cancelled the other one. That was a nice surprise .

Hmm...I always have used Enterprise, but now I am going to have to check out Costco. Because in doing just one sample, even if I kept Enterprise, it would be cheaper through Costco than the Enterprise site itself!

I always use Avis as well. I have preferred status, and oftentimes I find that I am given a much cheaper rate or upgraded car once I get to the counter.

I don't rent often, but I always use Enterprise. The price seems reasonable and they don't nickel and dime me.

Thank you all for the feedback. We recently joined Costco so I think I'll check that out.

I usually go with whoever is the cheapest. I've never had a problem, here in the US or in Europe. I usually go through Hotwire or Priceline when it's pleasure travel. I'll definitely check the COSTCO website next time.

I used to use Avis for work mostly. But I need a GM vehicle and they messed it up every time and it got annoying. So I switched to national because I can usually pick my own car and I think they have a better reward system.
But if it was on my own dime I would use any of those companies and not worry about it. They're all national and reputable. But it sounds like Costco could be an option as well. I've never tried that. I usually book personal travel through hotwire.com and have never had an issue. It's been Avis Hertz and enterprise that I can remember through there.

We tend to rent from Alamo and have been very happy with them. We had a rock hit the windshield in Denver one trip, and I just knew it was going to cost us a fortune. When we returned the car I pointed out the small crack in the glass, and they told me they'd get back with me. i never heard from them so I called to check the status. They told me it must've been taken care of by the company. I'd always heard stories of rental car companies nickeling and diming you if there was any damage but that wasn't our experience at all.

Avis. DH uses them for work and he likes being able to just stroll to where the cars are and pick it up instead of going to the main counter first. I got his wizard number from the travel agent and use it to make our leisure travel arrangements ourselves. I tried using Costco once or twice and they were always higher than his corporate rate.

Thanks Peas!!! I had a care reserved through Enterprise for next week and just for grins went through Costco to see if it would be cheaper. I just saved $30! I booked through Costco and cancelled my previous reservation.

We use Avis, but I had no idea Costco offered this. Will check them out for our trip next month.

I pretty much use Dollar/Thrifty all the time. Cheaper and I don't need any extras.

I used Hertz last time (IIRC). It was a local location and they upgraded us but we actually didnt want to be. They were out of the grade of car we requested though. The upgrade was "too much car" for us and DH drove it from SD to SF and didn't like it very much. I will check Costco for rentals from now on. Enterprise required a heft deposit last time I checked (like $400 vs. $250 with the others).

Whoever has the best deal, which is usually Alamo or Enterprise. Never had problems with either.
Another tip that I've seen some people already mention. NEVER prepay for a car. Set your reservation, then keep checking back weekly to see if prices drop. I did this when we went to Hawai'i. Initially booked our car about 5 months out, then kept checking prices. About 1 month before the vacation I checked prices and got the same car for nearly $300 less!!! Just cancelled my old reservation and got a new one.
