Because the Peas know of diseases and disorders I have never heard of, maybe you can help come up with something to look for or at before the next doctor appointment.
SIL was called by the school yesterday, her 5 year old daughter was wheezing and short of breath and the school became concerned because she couldn't catch her breath. SIL picked her up and went straight to the pediatrician who got her in right away. They did 3 breathing treatments (no idea of the details of this) but it didn't help. They sent her to the hospital for chest X-rays, techs took her BOL 4 different times while they were there because they kept saying that with her struggling that hard to breathe that she couldn't possible be getting enough oxygen, but her BOL was fine each time. Dr gave her a Rx (sorry don't know what it was) to take overnight and said to come back this morning at 9:15 for results of the X-ray and to see if the Rx did any good.
Chest x-rays are clear but DN is still struggling to breathe - SIL said just now "now it isn't wheezing anymore, it is literally like she can't take air in" It went on all night as well - she texted me early this morning that all night she sounded like she could just keel over at any minute.
Pediatrician is stumped, they have absolutely no ideas but because the chest X-rays were clear they stated that it must be something in her throat area. They've referred her to an ENT but the first available appt is Feb 16. SIL and BIL don't see how she can keep going like this for that long.
I think they should just go to the ER at the children's hospital - I think they will do everything possible there, and then the ENT would be called in for consult and they'd get results sooner...
SO what say the peas - any ideas or experience? I have no other details except what is above. THanks in advance!

Go to the ER. If my kid had been sent home unable to breathe I'd be livid.
(sorry if that sounds harsh - Asthma wife & mom here, but certainly not an expert)

Did they not x-ray her throat area? She's five, I wonder is something stuck there, top of a pen or something similar?

No ideas but I sympathize with the 2/19 date as my dh just needed hernia surgery was referred to doctor who's first appt was two weeks out just for a consult, bottom line is my dh ended up finding another physician who basically saw him and did the surgery in 72 hours so instead of waiting for that ENT doctor you might want to see if you can find another one that will see you sooner, just because the pediatrician referred you doesn't mean you have to only see that one. You just need to make sure the ENT is in your insurance's network if need be you can look on their website or call them for other ENTs in your area.

I'm not going to diagnose her. My first visit would be to an ER, not to the pediatrician. She needs to be evaluated and seen by an ENT and pulmonologist.

I just tried to call her and it went to VM so I'm hoping she is on the phone trying another route. I texted her and told her I thought she should go to the ER right now, but I've not heard back from her. The only good thing is that DN is not distressed and freaking out. She was at first, but she is acting fine now, just the gasping and gulping for air. So scary. Thanks for the responses!

Pediatric RN here - go immediately to a pediatric children's emergency room. If she keeps going like this, she will wear herself out and that becomes a whole other set of problems.
I hope they go soon - keep us updated.

Just from a mother's perspective - she needs to be taken to a pediatric ER immediately.
My first thoughts of things to look for (since the lungs are clear)
-physical blockage in the throat
-paralyzed muscles in the neck, throat, etc.
-or the nerve-brain connection "thinking" the throat area is paralyzed. (When I had a epidural, it went too high and I couldn't feel myself breathe. I was telling the doctor, "I can't breathe, I can't breathe!" Bless his heart, he calmed me down and said, "If you couldn't breathe, you wouldn't be able to talk.")

I have no idea but I would go straight to the ER. I just read a story about a 5 year old that died because there was mucous caught in her throat. Not saying that is what it is but that story freaked me out and I can't seem to get it out of my head...I wouldn't take any chances.

How odd that her blood oxygen levels are fine! So, even though she is having a hard time breathing, she is getting enough oxygen. That has me stumped too!
I would take her to the ER too, rather than wait a week for the ENT.

I can't even venture a guess, I'd say she needs to be seen now in the ER at the children's hospital. I wouldn't have kept her home all night like that. If her lungs are clear they need to focus on her throat. I hope she's seen asap and they get it figured out quickly. Tell your sister multiple nurses said so!

This story is a bit odd and something is missing.
If she is indeed struggling to breathe that hard with no response to bronchodilators, she would have needed to be admitted.
My first thought, after reading that, was that she aspirated something that cannot be seen on the xray. Not everything can be seen on an xray. Reading the update makes that even more likely on my differential diagnosis list. Hope she is on her way to an appropriate facility.

I'd go the ER at the nearest children's hospital. She could have something caught in her throat and still be able to breathe.

I would have her ask about bronchial/throat spasms.
About 10 years ago, I went with a kid to the ER with a similar story, including the doctor's office sending him home. The hospital ER had pediatric respiratory specialists, but even so, it took 3 doctors and a lot of stubbornness on our parts before we got the correct diagnosis.

I agree. Ped. ER. this is crazy they just sent her home.
There are a couple of congenital heart defects that can cause breathing issues that often don't present until a child chokes, or struggles to breathe, so if they can't find something, that's a place to look. My niece had her aorta grow around her trachea and her esophagus and reattach to her heart, so as she grew it crushed them together. I can't think of the name of the defect. They didn't find it until she choked and nearly died from it at 1 year. But some kids are much older before things like this are discovered.

SIL has not responded to any more of my texts this morning she told me the wait time for the ENT. I really hope this means that they are at the ER. I'll update when I know.
I don't think there is anything else going on or missing that SIL *KNOWS* about. They did not X-Ray her throat and I'm only going to assume that the ped at least looked in her throat.
I don't know about anxiety, she's not typically an anxious child at all - and I would think that 24 hours later if it was anxiety it would have settled by now. I also thought that if she were faking it for some reason (which would be out of character, but I'm grasping at straws) she wouldn't have been doing it in her sleep or been able to keep it up for this long. A 5 year old wouldn't have the ability to do that mentally I don't think.
Anyway, I hope I'll hear from her soon. Thanks for the input everyone.
