raindancer - I wanted to more info but didn't want to scare her, there is a few things mine is obstructional lung disorder due to my heart condition. It feel it mostly with activity or when I lay down. I can't breath. Does she have trouble at night sleeping etc... I sleep with a wedge. Sometimes my o2 is just fine and other times it's in the 60's. So I have the o2 at night. It used to be all the time. It will take a pediatric pulm dr to figure it out. I hope she feels better and they can find out the source of the issues.

SIL has not responded to any more of my texts this morning she told me the wait time for the ENT. I really hope this means that they are at the ER. I'll update when I know. I don't think there is anything else going on or missing that SIL *KNOWS* about. They did not X-Ray her throat and I'm only going to assume that the ped at least looked in her throat. I don't know about anxiety, she's not typically an anxious child at all - and I would think that 24 hours later if it was anxiety it would have settled by now. I also thought that if she were faking it for some reason (which would be out of character, but I'm grasping at straws) she wouldn't have been doing it in her sleep or been able to keep it up for this long. A 5 year old wouldn't have the ability to do that mentally I don't think. Anyway, I hope I'll hear from her soon. Thanks for the input everyone. My niece went to the ER after her choking incident and was released since nothing was lodged in her throat. Her ped. however was not so dismissive and insisted on a pediatric pulmonologist and a cardiologist. She required two surgeries. She will have breathing issues for the rest of her life. Hopefully they are at the ER and they are able to figure it out.

I hope it's been sorted out by now. I'm allergic to several things and they leave me gasping for breath. I would look at what the child had eaten or drank and eliminate those things.

I agree with everyone else, go to the ER. But for the record, when I was younger I came down with asthma like symptoms that drs were relatively perplexed by. They decided to test me for tons of things, and I came up positive for Lyme disease. It turns out that upper respiratory problems can be caused by lyme disease, so depending on where your niece lives, maybe she should be tested for that. I know that's tricky in this day and age with all the controversy over lyme, despite the fact that lyme disease IS a real thing and a ton of people are really badly affected by it.

ER / trauma nurse here although we do not see Peds at my ER.....this child needs an ER. If a child is struggling to breathe and a breathing treatment hasn't resolved the issue, other intervention is needed. Like now.
I'm not going to even attempt a guess / diagnosis but if the chest X-ray is indeed clear, something else is restricting the airway. That leaves really only the throat / larynx, possibly a cardiac issue. If I were the nurse, I would look at the throat first for something lodged.

IF blood oxygen levels are normal, is this some extreme panic attack??? I would still take her to the hospital!!!

Any updates?
She could have a partial obstruction somewhere with a foreign body (or even thick mucous) and still have a normal pulse ox. I do wonder how she slept that night at home and if the sounds continued. Poor baby! Hope there is an answer and she is better!

That would scare me to death! I would have taken her to the ER before the doctors office. Let us know what happens.

Ok, I know someone who had similar issues recently. No one knew what it was. Many Many nights in the hospital, Trips to the Mayo clinic. It was this Paradoxical vocal cord motion disorder www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2599980/Not many people even know it exists. Maybe it's what this child is going through too?

ER would be what I would do. I don't think they should be messing around with struggling for air. Yikes.

Sorry for my delay, crazy weekend.
My niece is much, much better. SIL did not take her to the ER on Friday after they left the ped office. She was on the fence about whether to take her because she started showing improvement Friday, and even more over the weekend. The sweet thing sounds like she's winded, or maybe stopped up is a better word. She's just breathing heavy, but no longer gasping or gulping for air.
I did not know this until Friday night, but BIL had his tonsils, adenoids, uvula and about 1/4" of tissue on each side of his throat removed because he was diagnosed with sleep apnea that was just getting worse and worse and is also a very heavy breather; everyone is wondering if maybe she has inherited this trait from him. So, they are still scheduled to see the ENT next week, but are on the cancellation list. Even if she inherited this from him, it's still odd that it came on so fast. But she remains in good spirits, has been playing, eating, and sleeping normally and is her usual happy self.
Thank you for your thoughts and concerns!

I'm so glad that she is doing better, but had hoped they would have figured it out by now. Poor girl!
If you have the time, after she sees the ENT, I would love to read an update. She is in my thoughts.

Not sure if you mentioned or if it was done, but by now I would think an ENT would have scoped her throat. Several years ago I was having a hard time breathing in the middle of the night - my lungs did not feel tight but I just FELT like I couldn't take in enough air, had to sit upright... Went to primary doc who diagnosed strep but i just KNEW he was wrong. Long story short, ENT diagnosed Epiglottis - inflammation of the tissue that covers the trachea (windpipe). It is a life-threatening disease. Yeah, mine wasn't 100% circumferential - because I would be dead if it had been. But lots of weird things can happen to our bodies. Sounds like she is resolving, but problems can be a pulmonary issue or an obstructive issue (in general).
Breathing issues should never be taken lightly (not that I'm saying they were), but too much can go wrong too fast.
