So renters moved... Back to Israel. Rental property is in the middle of a neighborhood, but has a large deep lot.
In the way way back we found an active bee box sitting in the dirt with a few ivy vines attached. Put it on craigs list for free. Two people looked, but, they were amateur bee keepers and were afraid the bottom might be rotted out, and said they were afraid 'angry' bees would storm if we disturbed their home.
Called animal control who referred us to Dept of Ag, who said that wasn't something they did. They had zero recommendation. Couldn't find professional bee keepers within a 100 mile area. I hate to call a pest extinguisher, they are good bees. Happy little pollinators in the neighborhood.
what to do? Any suggestions...
Update: So, I now have a professional willing to come get them, in two weeks. However, the two amateur bee keepers have circled back (at different times) to take another look and they each want them... but are looking into finding help to pick them up. I guess it will be first to arrive... gets them, but I really hope its the professional.

What would be the harm in letting it stay there?

What would be the harm in letting it stay there? I guess it would depend on the preference of the renter. Plus, I had better check to see if it is even permitted in the city.

go on your local facebook swap shop and ask for bee keepers. Don't say why, just let them assume you want to buy honey.

I'd do all I could to avoid an exterminator. Bees are struggling now and need us to help.

Bees are so important and can use all the help they can get right now. I know it might be a pain for you, but I would keep trying to find a beekeeper than can help you out. I have friends that keep bees, I can ask them for suggested resources.

Beekeepers probably belong to lists, groups and forums. Pudgygroundhog's friends may know how to find someone near you.

It's too bad you aren't local to me because my friends said they would come get them. They suggested contacting a local apiary, although I don't know if that is feasible where you live. This might be a good starting point. There is something listed for every state so hopefully somebody would be able to direct you to the right place. US State Honey & Beekeeping Associations:

I drove over to the local farm supply (feed and grain store) as they have a farmers market every Thursday. They gave me the name of three bee keepers. Thanks spitfiregirl ... Good suggestion, we'll see how this works out.

I am in several beekeeping groups on Facebook. I can either link you up, or can post there for you if you want to send me some details of where you are. The link pudgygroundhog posted is also a good place to look.
When you say 'bee box' - how big is it?

Here's another link on how to remove unwanted bees: American Beekeeping FederationUnwanted Bees/Bee Removal If you have unwanted bees around your home, you can contact a local beekeeper who may be able to remove the bees without killing them. To locate a beekeeper: Look in the Yellow Pages under BEEKEEPER or HONEY. Do a Google search for your local area or state's beekeeping association. Many websites will post contact information of local beekeepers who can help with swarms. Contact your County Extension Service, which may be listed under the name of your state's agricultural university. Ask your fire or police department. They often have lists of beekeepers who will take unwanted bees. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE BEES YOURSELF UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED BEEKEEPER!

You could also try any local universities. Sometimes their agriculture departments can help or at least will give you other contacts.

When you say 'bee box' - how big is it? The amateur bee keepers that looked at it told me it is smaller than the standard(?) bee box. I would guess it is Maybe 18x24. There are lots of different types of hive. We use quite small ones that are 14x12, it sounds like yours might be a top bar hive
Moving a bee hive where the bees are already settled is much easier than collecting a swarm. If it was me, I would wait until the evening when they have stopped flying around, close the entrance and then move it. If they are worried about the bottom being rotted then just slide it on to another board to move. We have 37 hives in various locations over here - we want to become professional bee farmers and hopefully make a living out of honey!

Can you put it on Craig's List "Free Bees to a good home!" That was the first thing I did* ..... Alas the two responses did not want to move the bees for fear that the bottom of the bee box had rotted out. Bees box has been sitting in dirt for an undetermined amount if tme. *see original post

But, if that was their reason for moving then they aren't good enough beekeepers anyway
