I could care less what the lady looked like. I'm just glad to hear you didn't turn a blind eye and called the police. You just might have saved that little boys life.

Don't get the uproar over the heavy set comment either. She made a description. So glad she stepped in. Hope the little boy is okay and it was looked into.

I don't think the OP meant anything other than being descriptive in calling the woman "heavy set". She used it to provide a visual of an even larger than normal size difference between an adult and a small child. She did the right thing in calling the police. It sounds to me like people were just looking to criticize the OP right from the beginning of this thread.

some of you get a bit too caught up in her description
i agree that it's just a description and it is relevant to the story
sorry that it hurt your feelings...but sometimes facts are facts
even if you do know lots of really strong skinny women

Weight has nothing to do with abuse. A thin woman doing the same thing would have been OK? Ashley, dont be a fucking idiot. All you people defending the OP's choice of language? You're okay with this?

I'm offended you use the term older.
Seriously people you care she wrote she was heavy set. And I'm heavy set. I'm good with the term. She didn't say some fat old lady was beating on a child. Again the only thing that you should focus on in that statement was SHE WAS HURTING A CHILD.
I didn't even see the "heavy set older" description when I read the post. It wasn't until I read the proceeding comments that I noticed people were pointing it out and making comments on the words used to described the person in the wrong.. She didn't jump to conclusions on it either and used terms like she was a low income or very wealthy, was single parent or married, uses food stamps and buys uncrustables with them, or has no education or 6 degrees at home and has a masters in child psychology, she never even said this was the persons kid. Just the person had a child in the doctors office.
The only thing that truly matters in this post is that SOMEONE DID SOMETHING or ATTEMPTED TO DO SOMETHING.
What she should have wrote was some low life woman was beating on a child in a doctors office and NO one would do anything about it.

Who gives a flying fig what the woman looks like?! Clearly the only reason the OP posted "heavy set" was to give a description to illustrate what she saw for all of us. Seriously, this is not something to get upset over.
OP you did the right thing. Good for you. I hope he will be ok.

Good for you. Please don't let what people here say stop you from intervening on behalf of a child again. He can't say thank you, but I will.....

I don't see how the description of the woman had anything to do with the behavior but I don't have any problem with her description. the fact that some people focused more on the description and not the act is what's concerning to me. would it have been any different if a super model was doing it?

We'll yeah. There is nothing offensive about saying "heavy set". Just like there would be nothing offensive in saying "slender" to describe someone. They're just adjectives. Not all words are used to shame fat people. Now if she had said, "this giant fat ass" or "gross tub of lard", or something else completely ridiculous and irrelevant to the story, then yes, that would be something to get upset about.
ETA: oh, I completely misread what you wrote there. No, I am not ok with what the OP said to Ashley. No need for that.

Thank you OP for doing something. I am absolutely appalled that there are people that could read your words and be outraged over the description "heavy set" rather than the fact that a child was being ABUSED.

Thank-you for doing that! And you know the old rules, just ignore those that upset you.
No validation, just proud is all.

IMHO those that are upset because of the way you described her would probably be the people sitting there trying to ignore what was going on. The forest for the tree's.
OP you did good. Bravo for standing up for what was right.
I will say a prayer of Thanks for you being where you where, when you were.

I say good for you for reporting it. How disappointing that no one else there had the courage to do the same thing. As for the heavy set comment she was describing what she saw. Don't see a big deal there.

This thread kind of train-wrecked, but if you really agree with what you quoted, why did you even bring up her description?

She could have described her as a giant bag of shit and I'd be ok with that. Mainly because she is.

And no one but you has said or implied any different. But my point is that if the important part of this thread was that the someone actually tried to help the boy, and YOU are quoting and EXACTLYing that, why nit-pick with her about her description? I don't think it hurts to give someone the benefit of the doubt in this kind of situation. She was upset. She had stood up for the child even though she was scared and upset. She had had to call the police and deal with all that. I've seen fat-shaming here in the past (like that thread where the pea bashed on an overweight woman for being in a bathing suit on the beach), but this clearly didn't seem like that kind of thing.

Ashley, dont be a fucking idiot. All you people defending the OP's choice of language? You're okay with this? I saw both sides of whether or not heavy set be excluded from the story but the "fucking idiot" comment was really uncalled for especially with the respectful way Ashley was addressing the OP.

Thank you for intervening!
I would take it one step farther. I would call the doctor and tell him that his own staff was unwilling to act on their obligation to be mandated reporters. That's not ok.

I was thinking that too or find some way to follow up with the dr, and at least give them an observation of what happened outside of the office. That's not right either. I doubt they would tell you anything but it's not ok.

I understand what you are saying. Thanks for looking out for that little boy! I don't think you meant anything "mean" by the way you described the woman. I am so used to hearing detailed descriptions on the news, from my husband/kids, etc., that sometimes we just are so caught up in the moment and forget that perhaps that detail isn't needed. I understand what you meant. I hope the little boy is okay!

Thank you so much for calling! What a monster that woman is. I wonder if you can call the doctor's office or the police to find out what happened. By doing what you did I'll bet you've changed that poor little boy's life for the better.

I agree with this! I didn't even notice the description either until I read the comments. I am sorry that some were offended, but I really don't think the original poster meant anything unkind. She was just upset about a little boy being hurt.

Well this thread escalated quickly.... into something that has nothing to do with the point of the experience... I appreciate you stepping in and helping that young boy. My heart bleeds for children who experience that. And you are absolutely right; if this is what the woman was capable of doing in public, who knows what she is capable of doing behind closed doors. I pray the police and CPS will arrest this woman, at the very least keep track of her to see if this is normal behaviour for this woman and can be caught in the act by more people. Has the police or CPS contacted you for more details? I know you said you are done with this thread, but if you hear anything more about this I would appreciate an update
