Wednesday afternoon update: As last evening progressed, we had more and more trouble getting liquids to stay in. I called a friend who is an er nurse earlier and followed her advice. I went to shower and when I got out, DH said she had thrown up again. I went to look at her and was horrified- just in the time that I was in the shower, her appearance changed so much - she started to get dark circles under her eyes and they were sunken in. She also hadn't peed in a few hours. We decided not to mess around anymore and took her to the ER.
They discovered she was severely dehydrated (took 3 huge bags of solution before she could even pee). She also had a heart rate over 170, when the highest it should be is 120. She was hooked to a heart monitor, given lots of tests, meds, etc. When the heart rate came down and she was rehydrated, they let us take her home.
She slept all night and has had 1/2 popsicle, a few small cups of water and a glass of apple juice.
They gave her Zofran last night and once it kicked in, she chugged a bottle of water. She was so out of sorts because she was so thirsty.
Today she's chugging like she did on Zofran and it's making me NERVOUS! Every once in a while she starts whimpering about her tummy hurting.
But, no throwing up (yet) knock on wood. Still having a lot of diarrhea, but I'll take that over the barf!
********************************************************************************************** Tuesday 4:45 pm update... well, I thought we were getting somewhere. She hadn't thrown-up since 11:05 this morning. We started small sips of clear liquids 2 hours later. 1-2 teaspoons every 15 minutes... success! Until 4:15 when she threw up again and 4:45 again.
DH is home now and has taken over as vomit police!
Poor baby girl! She's crying she wants a drink and we have to wait! ****************************************************************************** When compared to all of the peas with so much more significant issues, this seems petty, but I just need to whine...
A week ago Monday, DD started coming down with a cold (she's 8. Fortunately it was a snow day so she stayed in bed and rested. She wasn't any better on Tuesday and was running a fever. Same Wednesday. Better by Wed. night. Thought I'd send her back on Thurs. but she woke up Thurs with a fever again. Kept her home Friday since she was still coughing and sneezing. (She has a compromised immune system and gets sick worse and longer than normal - she was hospitalized for pneumonia 2x.)
Finally feeling better and went to a b-day party Sunday. Found out that after the girls left, bday girl started throwing up.
Sent DD to school Monday, she was fine. But, now I'm sick with the cold she had last week, including a sinus infection, ear infection and bronchitis. I spent most of the day yesterday in bed while the kids were at school.
Was planning to do the same today 'cuz I still feel like crud. Woke DS up at 6:15 for school. He doesn't feel good (chills, aches, sore throat). Let him stay home. Figured he's a teen, he'd sleep and watch tv all day and I could rest too.
Woke DD up for school at 7:30. She went in the bathroom and had (sorry - TMI ) major diarrhea. Then came out and sat on steps and said her tummy hurt. Proceeded to run back in the bathroom and get sick. She has had major diarrhea and throwing up 3 more times since.
No rest for me... The worst part of it though is that I have a horrible phobia about throwing up. Usually DH deals, but he's at work. After 3rd time, I called and asked him to come home, I just can't deal.
now I'm freaked I'm going to get it, and DS and DH. I've cleaned up after her (she partially missed the first time). I hate, and fear throwing up myself but dread DH and DS doing so... DS is messy. I warned him that if he doesn't make it, he cleans it (he's 15) and DH is LOUD
Yuck...I'm praying and disinfecting and praying and drinking grape juice and praying... would you please keep us in your thoughts?
Thanks pea friends!!!

I am so sorry, nothing is worse than nursing sick kiddos when you are not feeling the best.

Oh gosh, I'm sorry! Being a sick mom with sick family is the worst!
My family are awful vomiters, too.
Here's a helpful tip... if anyone throws up on the floor or misses, cover the sick with instant oatmeal. Let it sit. The oatmeal absorbs almost all of the liquid, and it's way easier to clean up. I often just sweep it up and then wash/disinfect my broom.

Oh gosh! I hear you! I'm fine with cuddling a kid with a cold. I just try and keep my face out of their face and hopefully remember to wash my hands afterward. But give me a kid who is puking....ugh. I have a hard time comforting them. I do but I internally freak out about catching it, just like you.
Just keep cleaning and know that a good portion of the time, adults don't get the stomach bugs like kids do!
Here's hoping for the best!

Ugh. My tip is if any of the kids have bunk beds, don't let them on the top bunk. It has an astoundingly large splash zone. Don't ask how I know.

I feel you! My husband brought home some cooties and I've been dealing with being sick while he is quickly recovering. I can't remember the last time I had an ear infection! Craziness. I'm hoping you will escape the heaves unscathed @nicoli!

Oh no! Here's hoping she feels better fast and no one else gets it. Spray everything with Lysol, wash hands frequently and keep her confined as much as you can.

Oh, and make your kid carry a small trash can with her wherever she goes. Yep, she is!!! Especially since both seem to keep happening at the same time!
And, no, we don't have bunkbeds, thankfully!!!

Just went through this at my house. As someone mentioned to me, this shall pass. But, try not to pass your vomit phobia onto your kids. It's a natural and efficient way for your body to get better.

I gave her all kinds of snuggles last week. Twice today she's come up to me looking so pale and pathetic and said, "can I have a hug." Breaks my heart to say no, but I keep telling her I'm trying to keep from getting sick so I can take care of her.

I start to have anxiety at the first signs of stomach illness as well. I just *know* that it will go throughout all 6 of us. Yesterday, as I was picking DS up from daycare I overheard her on the phone with a parent talking about the child having diarrhea. Then, at 9:30 this morning the DCP sent a text saying that she had it now and was constantly in the bathroom, so she would be closing. Ugh. So, I am now home with DS and hoping that he and the rest of us can stay healthy.

Wow, that sounds like a really rough week! I hope you all feel better soon. Not that I have a vomit-phobia, but waking up three times a night with the kids' vomit in my hair and pillow four days in a row is hard! Can't imagine what this must be like for you with a phobia

When we had bunk beds, anyone who felt even the slightest bit puny would sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag. With a dishpan next to them.
OP I hope your family gets healthy soon. Nothing worse than the stomach bug.

ashley Vomit Comet meet Vomit Queen OP, grape juice is NOT your friend if this is the road you are on. Stop immediately, switch to seltzer, sprite, ginger ale. apple. I know what they say about sugar content, but you've got to think stopping stain power.

I think she's using the grape juice to prevent getting the stomach bug. I've read that it works for some. The down side-if it doesn't, it's very messy puking up grape juice.

This is why it is a good idea to have disposable gloves and masks on hand, because you never know when these damn viruses are going to hit.
When cleaning up you should be wearing gloves and a mask (think the hard shell kind that you might wear when painting) because cleaning up (and the vomiting itself) releases airborne droplets. DON'T use reusable cloths or mops, only disposable, and dispose of items immediately. Clean with a bleach solution. And wash your hands a lot.
And please, please, please. . . no going out of the house, to school or to work until at least 48 hours after the last symptom. 72 hours is better. If you don't do this, then you are just spreading the virus around.

That is a nightmare!
It's tough to avoid it, but I go through the entire house with Clorox wipes. The sick person uses one bathroom and no one else uses it.
Also, noroviruses are often spread through food. Do not prepare food for others until at least 48 hours after your last symptoms.

That is a major nightmare. I hate throwing up... and when I hear other people do it it makes me sick. I hope all of you get well soon.
I had a chest cold for 2 weeks. had to camp out on the couch. I can't lay down when I have chest colds. I had it so bad that every time I cough I had to pee and then after the first couple days I was coughing so much and so deep it made me pee and poop. I spent 1 1/2 weeks running to the bathroom coughing and blowing my nose. I finally got over it and went to bed on Thursday night. Friday daughter came home 2 /2 hours early from work because she had a fever.
She ended up sleeping on the couch all weekend. she had to stay as vertical as possible while she is sick or it goes into her chest and with he asthma it takes her some times months to get rid of it. She has had pneumonia before so she has to be very careful.. But she is already feeling better. She stayed home yesterday but is going back to work today. She said she feels almost like her normal self.

Oh man, sounds like a crappy week for you. I hope you all feel better.
As for the vomiting, I always, always, always make sure that the kids have a bowl or garbage can with a liner near by when they are sick. I do not risk having to run to the bathroom. It is much quicker to clean up that way as well since if the bucket is next to their bed, they never miss.
I also always emphasis to them that if they can't make it to the bathroom the first time it comes on, then do it on a blanket. Blanket ONLY! That way it can be wrapped up and thrown right into the wash. No worries about mattresses and carpet if they use a blanket.
Good luck!

Poor baby girl! She's crying she wants a drink and we have to wait! Whoa, I just read this? Why do you have to wait?? If someone is vomiting or has diarrhea it is ESSENTIAL to push liquids! Even if they vomit it back up! Something still gets absorbed. Dehydration is a major concern. You don't want to her get dehydrated.

I don't have a vomit phobia but as soon as one of my girls threw up I immediately felt the nausea coming on. It was usually just in my head and I didn't truly get sick but UGH!
A couple of months ago a child in my class told me that "E" was crying. He is not a crier (I teach first grade) so I called him up to me and asked him what was wrong. I couldn't understand him because of the sobs so I leaned down a little to hear what he was trying to say and he threw up all over me. IT GOT IN MY MOUTH!
I didn't get sick. Miraculous. But I did go home and take a shower and change clothes. My principal was surprised that I came back to school that day.
