So, why do you have to change the water every 30 minutes? It's a 20 pound ice cube; the water is still cold after 30 minutes, EVEN colder than the tap water I'm going to replace it with. Can I change it every hour instead of every 30 minutes? TIA!

I do not know the answer to this, but I wonder if the fact that it is a 20 pound ice cube IS the reason? You want the water to be cold, but not too cold or the turkey will never thaw. Hopefully somebody who knows for sure will chime in!

We thaw ours in the sink and only change the water a couple of times ... it works for us and the turkey hasn't killed anyone yet

I would think it would be because you're cooling down the water to the point that it's no longer warming up the turkey? I dunno, I just plop the thing on a plate on the counter for a couple hours and I've always been fine.

It's not so much about the time as it is the temperature of the water. The water needs to remain at 40 degrees or less to be safe. If you keep you house warm then it's likely the temp of the water will rise faster even with the frozen bird sitting in it.

I think the people who answered already are right.
We don't thaw our turkeys that way we put them in the fridge a few days before we need it. If it still seems to frozen the day before we will put it on the counter for a few hours.

I just take the frozen turkey to bed with me for a night of cuddling. Works like a charm!

You aren't changing the water to keep it cold. You're changing it to keep it warm. (Warm enough to thaw the turkey, that is.)
