Hi All,
I should know this and after days of reading and trying to figure it out, I still don't. I'm hoping someone will educate me and not tell me it's already been addressed. (It probably has and I have my blinders on.)
At our previous home, all of the posts were in bold. After I read a post, it was no longer bold, so it was easy for me to keep track of what I had/hadn't read. But here, it doesn't work that way and I'm confused!
I've seen several folks mention how to mark all as read, but if I'm reading in the am and again in the pm, they don't stay marked. I can see the NEW! flag, but it stays on all of the posts, even after I've read them. The only way I can get it to go away is if I reply. There's also that funky little check box, which I'm sure is there just to confuse me.
So, as a former lurker, I don't want to get slapped for asking something that has already been asked, but I honestly have looked for the answer and still CANNOT figure it out! Would someone please explain (in Kindergarten language, apparently) just how I can tell what I've read and what I haven't read? You ladies are writing so much these days and this girl is having a hard time keeping up!

On this forum, threads you haven't read have a "new" tag to the left. On threads you've already read, the tag will be missing. But when a new post is made to that thread, you'll see the NEW tag again.
It's a nice feature-especially since you can click on the NEW tag and you will be taken right to the first unread post in that thread.

Thanks, so that's what the flag means, duh.

You can also mark a post "read forever". I use this because I use the "participated" button in the top right often. This "read forever" is helpful if you post say, congratulations and you don't want to ever go back and see it again. Up in the right is "actions", just pick "read" and "forever".
If you want to clear the whole board, while at the list of topics, just choose the "Select", "action" button and "mark board read". This would get rid of all "new" labels until there was something new.

But when a new post is made to that thread, you'll see the NEW tag again. It's a nice feature-especially since you can click on the NEW tag and you will be taken right to the first unread post in that thread. Exactly - EVERY time there is a new post since you last visited a thread, the New button reappears. Other things that should help - if you're reading on a desktop you can hover over the thread title and it will show the first few sentences of the OP. - if you read a thread (or several) once and aren't interested in seeing it again, when you're in the thread listing click in that tickbox you mention. Then go to the Actions dropdown near the top right (opposite the page numbers). Choose Mark as Read, and it will give you several options. If you choose Forever, the New button won't reappear on that thread for you, even if there are new posts.

Well, that answered my question as to why the NEW tag kept popping up non threads I know I've read. I feel like a big lightbulb just clicked on over my head and the giant "Ohhhhhh," you hear is me!
Thanks for the help!

OK, my lightbulb just turned off. I'm stuck again. Sorry! I hate being stuck! I went to the main page, under NSBR and was reading posts. When I was done, if I didn't want to go back, I clicked on the checkbox and got a checkmark. Then I went to actions, clicked on mark as read, selected forever and then continued reading. When I went back to the main page, it was marked as NEW again! So, I thought I had it figured out (I've even referenced your directions several times admin). What am I doing wrong?

Um, pass? It works for me! Are you refreshing the page, or just using the back button? Have you got cookies blocked?

I'm just using the back button. Should I try refreshing? No, cookies are only blocked for unfamiliar sites. This one is OK. I'll keep trying. At some point my learning curve will click, I hope! Thanks for answering me!

Yep, if you're just using the back button you're going back to the exact same state as you had before you changed/read anything. If you refresh the page (or go back by clicking on the name of the board in the white box above the thread title) it should then register what you've read/marked as read.

I've discovered if I use the back button, the 'new' flag doesn't disappear; if I go to the top of the page and click on the forum name (NSBR Resurrected) it does.
