I am going to be covering a board meeting and city council meeting for our local newspaper. I'm able to record the meetings and am looking for suggestions and input on digital voice recording apps, sound quality, necessity of a microphone (and I'm seeing there are digital microphone apps and external plug in ones) how these affect battery life, etc. Anyway, color me overwhelmed by the topic and I can't afford for any technological troubles the night of.
Does anyone have any information to help me out?
Thank you!

I'm going to be taking minutes for a few meetings with over 125 people in attendance. I'd bought a little sony recorder for about $80 and tried it out at the last meeting (similar type meeting as the ones I'll be doing) to try it out and it worked great. As long as they used the mic I was able to capture it all and I sat about 3-4 tables away from the podium.

By mentioning "aps" I assume you are thinking of using a smart phone... I wouldn't attempt it with a smartphone. Not only can you end up with battery issues (and you can't reload a battery) but you can end up with data storage issues if your phone memory is taken up with aps and photos. If you do use your smart phone an external mic is a must. Smartphone mics were made for very close range recording (you recording your voice to a memo for example) Even an inexpensive digital recorder from WM will give you a more reliable recording.
For interviews and meetings while doing my school work we used a Zoom recorder but it will set you back $200-300 or so. I've got a Sony I think I paid $40 for that gets better sound than my phone. Plus the batteries and the media storage can be changed out if needed.

an ap can't give your phone better playback sound than the hardware is engineered to pick up in the first place.

Thank you so much for your help. I went out this afternoon to best buy and purchased an Olympus digital voice recorder.
