My son surprised me yesterday - he is taking me to New York for 4 days over Mother's Day. I am beyond thrilled and excited. He and I have talked about going since he was in high school 12 years ago. So he decided to make it happen. He's already got our flights, hotel and we are going to pick a broadway show and restaurant for a nice dinner.
Fly in at noon Friday and fly home at 3:00 on Monday. What are some must see and do in NY? Must places to eat?
what is your favorite broadway play?
have I mentioned how excited I am? Because I am beyond excited

How fun! NYC is my favorite! My favorite show is Wicked. However, we also loved Lion King. It really depends on what type of show you are in the mood to see.

one of the best shows on broadway now is Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder. also, PIppin is really good. if you have never been and haven't been to many shows, though, you might want to see Wicked or Lion King.

There's an AMAZING italian place called Bella Vita's in Times Square on W 43rd. Their brick oven pizza is so good and so is everything else there!
My girlfriends and I always make it a point to go share a frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity 3 and then we hit Dylan's Candy Bar while we are there. Serendipity 3 is the place from the movie Serendipity and it's just so cool inside.
Over by the Hilton in midtown, there's the Halal Guys food cart. The food is so so good and while the line will be really long, it moves fast and it's worth it. Juniors for dessert!
As for the Broadway show, I saw Newsies two years ago and it was so so good! I haven't seen any other shows so I'm probably not the one to give you advice there.
Also, you can take a carriage ride around or a bike buggy through (buggy is better) through Central Park. That's definitely a must do!

My vote is for Wicked. I absolutely LOVE Chelsea Market. Central Park and Governor's Island are cool. Also the High Line . What kinds of things interest you? Shopping, fashion, touristy vs local off-the-beaten-path, museums?

I am a musical person, so my suggestions lean in that direction. Lion King and Wicked are perennial favorites. Both are still open. Not sure about ticket availability for either these days. Both remain quite popular. Book of Mormon is generally sold out. Pippin was fabulous, but closed. Cabaret is closing soon too. If/Then (Idina Menzel) is closing any minute now so that's out too. An American in Paris is coming to Broadway very soon. Not sure when previews end, but you should be able to get tickets now for May. Prices are a little less during previews. I am waiting for my March work schedule and plan to see it in previews. It got rave reviews in Paris. On the Town is also supposed to be fabulous. Annoyed that I have to wait to see it now. I missed my chance earlier. Finding Neverland will be open by then. We know 2 of the young boys in that. I know people love Aladdin, but I wouldn't pick that one for a once in a life time trip. Kinky Boots is fun! Have not seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch yet. I have not seen the revival of Les Mis (saw the original a few times), but it should be fresh as the leads and children have all be recast very recently. We adored Matilda. It has humor for everyone. If you want to see Chicago, there are generally seats available for half price at the TKTS booth, most nights. Same for Mama Mia, Jersey Boys and Phantom of the Opera. Best nights for ticket availability for most shows is Tuesday night. Many theaters are dark on Mondays, but those that are open usually have seats available. As far as a nice dinner, what is the price range and what type of restaurant would you be interested in? There are quite a few good restaurants in the theater district.

Dh and I went in November.
I think you will be struck by how small certain things are in real life. Like Times Square. It is so much smaller than I anticipated. The city is so very walkable.
Download the HopStop app. It makes the subway so easy. All you need to keep straight is uptown/ downtown. Get a free map from the hotel or airport that shows the neighborhoods. That helped me so much. Also, pull up the subway directions before going underground. Keep it open on your phone in case you lose reception. We loved the subway. Not at all scary.
I highly suggest the 9/11 museum. So amazing. A must see in my eyes.
If I had it to do over I would take the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue.
Chinatown was a blast. You only need 2 hours or less to walk around and see the sights. This is a great place to buy the souvenirs you see everywhere else. Be prepared to bargain.
Make sure you go to Central Park, Grand Central Station, and the NY Public library.
One top: outlets are few and far between in the older NY buildings. Our plan was to charge our phones at meals. That did not work out. I would buy each of you a portable cell phone charger. I got mine for about $40 at Radio Shack. It is a must have in my opinion. You will use your phone for so much during the day.
Have a wonderful time!

I highly recommend the Circle Line Landmark (semi circle) for a great overview tour and if you like walking, walk the High Line down to the Chelsea Market. If museums are your thing, the Met and the MOMA would be my first recommendations. The Met is on Central Park, so ties in perfectly with a walk through the park. The MOMA is in midtown, so near Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, the Public Library and not far from Times Square. I can also recommend the Foods of NY Tours as a nice way to explore a neighborhood. If you are looking for another evening show besides Broadway, check out Stomp. Definitely take in the 911 Memorial and Museum. I wish I was planning a trip right now - have fun!

You have to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. We had pizza at Grimaldi's Pizza after we walked across the bridge. We also walked along the promenade ( I think that is what it is called) - phenomenal view of Manhattan. I loved Central Park and we tried to visit a different part of it each day of our trip. We saw Wicked while we were there. We decided to go with a big musical that has been there a while. We all loved it. We took a ferry out to the Ellis & Liberty Island. I probably would just take a trip on the Staten Island Ferry instead to see the statue from the water. We went to the 9/11 Memorial and the visited the museum. I would recommend doing that. On our last day of our trip we bought a hop-on/hop-off bus pass from Groupon and just enjoyed driving through all the sections of New York we had not made it to yet. If we wanted to get off and check out a neighborhood we could knowing we could hop back on the bus a little later. We did a night tour that was part of our Groupon. That was pretty cool. We went to Wicked and loved it. If I went back I'd probably go to the Lion King.

We love seeing Matilda, the kids are amazing in it. As far as restaurants, my favs are: Carnegie Deli, ABC Kitchen, Shake Shack, Spice Market, Burger Joint, Dominique Ansel's Bakery, Levains (amazing cookies!), Grimaldi's Pizza (by the Brooklyn Bridge), Joe's Pizza, City Bakery (for their hot chocolate), Eataly, Carmine's (family style), Momofuku milk bar, Quality Meats....I could go on and on....love that city so much!

I absolutely love NY!!! We took a bus tour and it was awesome! I loved window shopping on 5th Avenue and going to Tiffany's. My biggest regret is not having had an opportunity to see Wicked!! I hear that it is fabulous as is The Lion King!

How exciting! What a wonderful son!
I went for the first time last year. My DH was in meetings all day and I was a bit overwhelmed since I didn't even plan for my trip. Just decided to go at the last minute.
I have to tell you I bought 2 passes on those tourist buses. 1 day Uptown. 1 day Downtown. I LOVED IT! Got to see everything in 2 days! Get on and off where you want. The bus will pick you up when you are ready. Included is also free tickets to the top of the Rock and some other places. Can't remember now.
If you want to climb up into the Statue of Liberty make your reservation now. You had to have a reservation (which I didn't know about)
We saw Newsies. Loved it! I was surprised at how small the theatre was! I'd only been in LA.
We had the cheap pizza one day. Loved it! Juniors. Yummo. Got a treat from the Cake Boss near Times square.
I really want to go back.
Have FUN!

We went for the first time last March and we loved it so much we are headed there again next month. Must do Times sq. Plus, a highlight from ourtrip was going to the Times sq museum. It is here where you can write a wish on a piece of confetti that will sprinkle NYC on NYEve. We also loved Phantom of the Opeta-classic NY, in my opinion. Must see all the icons....statue of liberty, ellis island, walk the brooklyn bridge....for this trip, we are planning to walk the bridge to Manhattan at night so we can see the city all lit up. You will have a blast!!! What amazing gift!!!

What a wonderful weekend! For Broadway, I recommend the Lion King if you want to see a musical. It is visually stunning and the music is amazing! I'm not a person that is crazy about all things Disney but this show is unforgettable. Wicked is also fabulous, but the Lion King is something I will never forget. The Top of the Rock (the NBC building) has great views of the city and Central Park. Central Park will be beautiful at that time. (I was surprised at how beautiful spring in NYC can be!) Walk "The High Line" (The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues.) The high line is beautiful and unique. It's a walking trail up above the streets and it has trees and flowers. I've never seen anything like it. The High Line

My husband and I are NYers *but* when we were dating in Summer 2002, we did the double-decker red bus tour. It is still one of my very favorite memories. Ever! We had so much fun! (Not-so-fun side note: it was 10 months post 9/11 and there was still ash floating around in the air). But yes, the bus tour will let you see lots and you can hop on and off as you please.
