We are having our dark wood kitchen cabinets painted white/cream. If you've recently painted your cabinets, did you use a semi-gloss finish or eggshell? I want them to be scrubbable but think the semi-gloss might look a little dated? Or maybe that's just in my head. The overall style of the kitchen is traditional, not modern, if that makes a difference.

when we painted them, we always used a cabinet & door paint. it was a satin I guess? you couldn't choose the finish, it just "was". it worked really well and they held up to lots of scrubbings.

I just had custom cabinets installed and they are painted an off white with a clear sealer. It's not so much the paint as it is the clear sealer that makes cleaning easier. Mine is a matte finish.

I'm painting mine now with chalk paint and sealing with a satin finish polycrylic.

I sell paint for a living, and the standard finish for cabinet re-dos is Satin, which sits between eggshell and semi-gloss on the sheen chart.

Thank you scrapalatte! That's the information I was looking for. The contractor comes back tomorrow so I'll tell him satin.

I'm a big chicken.

Sherwin Williams Divine White - it's the color the builder used on all our baseboards, doors and trim when the house was built and we wanted it to match.

I don't know if you looked into this, but I've had two different friends tackle similar projects in the last few years. One painted everything. It was very, very difficult to get a good finish on the oak cabinets - the grain really wanted to come through and durability has been an issue. In less than 2 years, there are areas where the paint has chipped. The other friend painted all the cabinets, but replaced the doors and drawers. It looks awesome. I would definitely consider something like that if I wanted the painted look in my kitchen. It was significantly cheaper than replacing the cabinets (she mentioned something like 10%) but obviously more expensive then painting. It does give you the durability of a factory finish on the highly visible and used pieces.

Thanks, Darcy. We're having professionals paint the cabinets so I'm hoping they will be OK. If not, then we might look at replacing the fronts down the road.
They're only seven years old and in excellent condition, so it seems wasteful to replace them if the paint will do the job. I guess we'll see!

We had our dark oak kitchen cabinets professionally painted white over thirteen years ago. They removed the doors and sprayed them, used brushes for the cabinets.
The painters spent quite a bit of time on prep, that can make a difference. Ours have held up really well. Coincidently, they used a Sherwin Williams paint.
