I don't love having strangers in my home, but it doesn't generally BOTHER me.. However, once when my daughter was a baby we had Sears send someone out to repair our dishwasher. This guy creeped me out SO BADLY that when he went out to his truck to get tools or whatever, I grabbed a knife from the kitchen and hid it under the couch my daughter and I were sitting on. Can you believe that? WTF was I thinking? In retrospect I can't even believe I let him in my house. Of course, he didn't actually DO anything but he set off every internal alarm bell I had.

It normally does not bother me at all to have a service person at the house. I make sure that I call a reputable company and assume they do their due diligence on the employees they hire.
That said, I did have one service person that bugged me some. He was here for my refrigerator. He needed a part that had to come from a warehouse in the southern part of the area. He wanted to come back later that day with the part. I told him that if he could be back before 5pm that would be fine. He could not guarantee that he could get the part and be back by then. I suggested coming back the next day or some other day. It wasn't an urgent fix. He didn't want to do that. He really wanted to be finished with the service call that day. Maybe they have stats that are kept or something. Anyway, he kept questioning me trying to find out why he had to be there by 5pm, wondering if I had plans, if I was going to have to leave, etc. etc. I don't tell strangers that are in my home what my plans are, where I will be, when my house will be sitting empty because I am gone, etc. It bugged me that he kept trying to get the information asking in different ways about 4 or 5 times. I kept saying that I was only available until 5pm.

I'm with Olan on this. The world needs 'service guys' to fix things I'm incapable of handling. I am reluctant to come up behind them in case their shirts aren't long enough though.

I find this topic so odd when it comes up. I have never been freaked out or scared or nervous etc when a worker comes to my house. dh ran a business for 20 years where he went to multiple homes daily. I feel part of the reason he was so successful was because he is so friendly and clean cut and apparently many women are super freaked out about people in their homes but they felt comfortable with him. Do you really think someone from a company is going to do something to you -- you know where to find them if they did! Of all the things to be worried about, I find this really silly and pretty rude.

I am similar as the OP. I am not fearful of them though. I just don't like it. I don't feel like I can relax and carry on with normal business. Since my dh is one of these guys, I can add that this thread does not offend me at all.

Not in the slightest no. I know you're not saying that you think they're going to rape or murder you but really to say they freak you out is pretty bloody insulting. They are just ordinary people earning a living, maybe you shuffling things around aimlessly freaks them out!

I don't know him from Adam and you think it's silly and rude to feel uncomfortable with him walking all over my house. Geesh. These are my feelings...thanks for being so accepting. Of my feelings about what goes on in my own house. For the record, this guy wasn't that friendly, cleancut or seemingly knowledgeable. He smoked on the patio. He tracked mud. I'm sure your Dh was a gem tho. He only had one tooth. Yes, I'm sure that makes me a judgemental hag.

If you don't think them murderers and rapists what exactly about service professionals creeps you out?
The last servicemen in my home was a plumber. It was overkill to call him but I really couldnt figure out how to install my shower head and bidet. I stood over his shoulder so next time I could save the cash. He talked me through what he was doing, showed me how to change the filter on it and suffered my small talk. I had an Angies List deal and instead of making me redeem it he recommended I order a more sturdy bidet and use the coupon for a subsequent visit. When the bidet arrived I called the company again and they sent out a different guy who was just as helpful and friendly.
I think when you treat people with kindness instead of suspicious it pays off.

Yes, it totally freaks me out. I don't want to breathe down their necks but I also don't like the idea that they're off in a part of my house where I can't see them. It causes me so much anxiety, I will put it off as long as possible. And there have been a couple of times I was worried for my safety. ETA: FWIW, having people I know in my house generally causes me anxiety and a stranger just compounds that. That said, I understand it's my issue and not theirs. I am always kind and offer them a drink or something. I don't understand why my anxiety makes me rude, though.

Welp, with that lack of attention to detail it will be hard to pick him out of a line up...you know when you comes back to rob the place. Next time try looking him in the eye. I heard that helps.

No. I do not feel freaked out when service people are in my home.
I do get a little burst of energy when someone is here---I feel compelled to clean and appear busy. But it doesn't freak me out in any way.

No. I figure they are human beings trying to earn a living just like me. Not murderers and rapists. I agree! I have never worried at all when service men and women have come to the house to fix things. It never even crossed my mind to worry about it. We have had many people come to fix things and these men and women have been so kind. I always tell them they are welcome to use the powder room and offer then a bottled water or soda.
I bet the service people are probably worried too. They don't know what they are going into when they come to your house. An acquaintance cleans houses. She has to have a background check when she started with the company. But she says obviously her clients don't have a background check in order to be her client so she has to hope for the best. I never thought of it that way before. I probably am not explaining it well, but what she said made sense to me.

I do not feel like they will rape or rob me. Good golly....... I am 100% sure of that!! It is more my fear of being judged by them for not understanding the workings of whatever it is they are repairing. I worry they will ask me a question and I will look ignorant. I also worry that my house is not clean enough. It never fails, they will need to be in that one place you have not cleaned in months like the far corner of the basement. Recently we had some phone issues, wouldn't you know it, the repair guy had to work behind my sofa. I had been neglecting the floor under there for a while and about died when he had to pull it out. It was not gross but still embarrassing. Me too! I am so embarrassed that my house is such a mess. They are always so kind and tell me that it doesn't look bad at all.

I can understand your feelings. I prefer not to be by myself when someone comes, and try to schedule it so that my fiancé can be here to handle it lol. Ironically, it's my house I owned before him, even. Despite the fact that he's generally more knowledgeable than I am on most household things (he can explain the prob better and what he's tried to do to fix it), I also worry about my house like most PP have said. I worry that it's dirty, smells, etc. And what I should do while they're working. Fortunately, I've never really really had the creeps over a visitor.
On the flip side, my fiancé does occasionally does similar things for work. I would hope that no one judges him as such, because he's a big teddy bear. I try to be as courteous and nice as I can to those that visit, and try to offer them drinks or whatever as well.

I can't remember the last news story I heard about a service man attacking a housewife. I just don't think it happens very often at all. Wives of service men probably find these posts offensive. These men don't walk into your home and suddenly become savage rapists. They're working. Their office just happens to be in your bathroom or laundry room for a few hours. Reading comprehension is a good thing...but thanks for playing. LOL Well.....you were in a panic. Getting hives. One could only assume that you were afraid for your personal safety. Comprehensive posts are a good thing.

No, service call people don't freak me out. In fact, the last time a plumber did some work for me, I slept with him. He's my husband though. Having strangers in my house when I am alone doesn't bother me at all. I do whatever I'd normally be doing. I don't worry about them judging me or anything either. I've never had dh come home and laugh and tell deprecating stories about clients though, so I don't figure other service people are going to do so about me. I am not offended by threads like this, but I can never relate to them. Dh does mostly commercial work these days, but his residential clients always loved him, and would request him. Sometimes they'd even feed him meals (the older ladies especially) and people have given him random gifts, etc. He does excellent work though, and is very honest, and also very personable and charming (but not in a socialized psychopath kind of way..... )

Hand to god I've never called a service repair person. Growing up my mom and dad fixed everything that broke. Since I've been married either my husband or I do all the repairs including appliance repair, auto repair and remodeling the house. Last time we roofed the house I did it mostly by myself while my husband was at work. The only thing we ever hired done was the concrete driveway, but the workers weren't in my house.
Now I'm wondering if it would make me uncomfortable to have a service person in the house. Hmmmm. I don't know. Have to think about it.

I've been lucky, every single service person I have had in my house from cable guys to window installers have been awesome! One contractor that was doing some work in my bathroom over the course of 8 months I became so comfortable with I would find myself offering him dinner. They have all just been really nice, normal guys. Often they are the ones concerned about keeping me safe because I live alone. Telling me to remember to lock my door once they leave and stuff like that.
Depending on what is happening I will "babysit" them. Often because I am trying to learn what they're doing so I will understand things better and maybe not have to call them next time. Also because there are certain areas of the house I don't want them alone in. Not because they are a service person but because they are strangers. I wouldn't want any strangers just wandering around in my bedroom unsupervised.
I agree with being embarrassed by things. It never fails. The cable guy will always need in the one room you didn't clean for him. The electrician's work must be done right next to the catbox, etc.

No it doesn't bother me at all. I've never thought twice about it. We have an old house and have done a lot of remodeling projects over the years and there is always maintenance and repairs to be be done so I guess I'm just used to it. We do use well established/recommended companies though.

I think my family creeped out a painter once. We had heard how wonderful he was from a friend (whose whole neighborhood uses him). We had him come and paint the ceiling of the house we were selling. He did great work for a great price. Then we moved to a very large house a mile away. He came and gave us an estimate for getting most of the house painted. We hired him to come and do 2 rooms. (He would do more another time). He came and because it was new drywall maybe, he was having trouble paining a deep maroon color in the study. We told him that if it takes longer, that's fine, we would pay him whatever more he needed, and he could do it when he could work it into his schedule. Well, he came back, painted for 3 hrs. then left. Never finished! Never said bye, just left! We thought he was taking a lunch break. He didn't even ask for money (but he only did primer and one coat). We called him and asked what was the problem, that we were happy to pay more and he could come anytime. He wouldn't come back and didn't even want to get paid.
Never understood what happened! We were really nice to him, and kept our kids out of the way and quiet.
