Looking for some tourist advice for things to do in Las Angeles. We will have a car. DH wants to see Venice beach and Hollywood. Other than that I've got nothing.
I was wondering what we shouldn't miss? Are the tours of stars homes worth it? Seems boring to me but you never know.

April will be a great time to be here!
Hollywood blvd is gross and dirty but all the tourists love it. to me, if you have been part of the street scene in Time Square, there is no need to see Hollywood Blvd. if you really want part of the movie experience, do a tour of one of the studios. Sony, Paramount, Warner Bros....they are all within driving distance.
the beach cities are always great in April because the throngs of tourists are crowding them all. Venice and Santa Monica are the usual tourist traps. I live near the beaches in the South Bay (Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo) and used to live by the beach cities south of Long Beach (Seal, Huntington, Laguna, Newport)
I my opinion, tours of stars' homes is a waste of time because most of the celebrity homes are set far back behind high gates and long driveways. you probably have a better chance of seeing more D-list celebrity homes because they won't be as secluded or guarded. you have a better chance of seeing celebs at restaurants than driving by their homes and just seeing their hedge or gate. seriously, if you want luxury homes, just drive yourself through Bel Air, Malibu, Newport, etc. the houses in Beverly Hills are more clichés than impressive.
a final word: TRAFFIC. don't expect to see many sights in one day because most of your time will be spent in traffic whether it's freeway or side street. even though you have a week, prioritize what you want to see and do. if you have a chance, come and ask here and we will tell you what freeways are worst and when.

If you want to do really touristy stuff, definitely do a tour through Starline Tours. They have a kiosk in the courtyard of the Chinese Theatre. We've done a couple of them, and they're a lot of fun. Check out the Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax. The Grove shopping mall is there too, but if you're hungry (especially for breakfast or pie), make a stop at Du-Pars. Definitely the yummiest pancakes you've ever tasted! For culture, check out the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA). If you want to head south, Laguna Beach is a fun day, as is Crystal Cove park/beach. Have a great time!

The Warner Brothers VIP tour is fun.
If you like hiking, you can hike up to the Hollywood sign.

Thanks for the ideas. Not sure about going to the beach, while ds and I could spend a day there would hate that more than the day we'll be spending at Disneyland.
A studio tour sounds good I'll add that to our list.

I grew up south of LA, but when we were there last summer we took the Starline city tour. It was perfect for seeing a lot of things, but only investing 6 hours in it. Of course, once we were there, my teenagers wanted to know why we weren't doing a movie stars homes tour, but we didn't have time for that in the same day so had to pass.

Los Angeles is spread out and I would plan my week based on seeing a different area every day.
The LACMA is near the LaBrea Tar Pits, Craft & Folk Art Museum, Architecture & Design Museum, The Grove and the Farmers Market.
Paramount Pictures Studios is next door to the Hollywood Forever Cemetary and near the Chinese Theater, Walk of Fame, Griffith Observatory and Hollywood Bowl Overlook. You get a great view of the Hollywood sign from the Observatory and the Chinese Theater with the hand & foot prints is way cooler than I thought it would be, but the Walk of Fame is nothing exciting. Check out the shows at the Observatory too - we saw Water is Life several years ago.
Another day I would go to The Getty Center, Museum of Tolerance and then meander onto Rodeo Drive and over to Westwood Village.
Explore Santa Monica on a farmers market day (Wed or Sat) and head down to Venice Beach and the Venice Canals (don't miss this neighborhood).
IMHO star home tours are fun and let you both enjoy the drive without having to navigate the roads.
If you are into science/space head to the Endeavour exhibit at California Science Center on the USC campus.

Thanks again for all the things to do. I can't wait we haven't had a vacation in years.
