I have taken/watched The Perfect Collection class from Shimelle awhile back. I am considering trying out the Return to the Collection. Have any of you taken that class? What are your thoughts - especially if you are taking both? thanks for any feedback!

I did not care for Return to the Collection. I think The Perfect collection was awesome and somewhat reset how I scrapbook. It remains one of my favorite classes ever. However, I think if you took The Perfect Collection and have seen at least one or two other Shimelle/Glitter Girl videos, the Return isn't necessary. I don't even recall liking it while I took it when it first came out, but I'll be honest, I don't remember why that was.
The main thing I recall is that I used the same collection that Shimelle used. It wasn't anything I would normally have purchased, but I was willing to step out of my zone for the fun of the class. I used it to scrap an event and the collection did fit the guest of honor of the event. I recall thinking that Shimelle didn't seem particularly enthused with the collection either. But, that is probably just me, you know? I also don't recall being particularly bowled over by the embellishing. I feel bad saying that, but I just don't think that it rose to the level of what you find in Glitter Girl videos and that was the intended focus of the class.

I was kind of wondering if it was anything more that what I could see in the Glitter Girl videos or any new concepts. I just watched a series by Nicole Mackin on YouTube where she shows her twist on "The Perfect Collection" and it got me wanting some more inspiration of "batch scrapbooking". I may just wait on this as I have plenty of other classes I still need to work through...including another one of Shimelle's. I also saw on another forum that a lot of people were distracted by the collection she used for the class...so that made me hesitant as well. Anyways thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

It wasn't just you that didn't like the collection in Return to the Collection. I thought it was a horrible choice and it didn't inspire me. And honestly, I think the layouts Shimelle made were bad because of the collection.

What collection did Shimelle use in Return to the Collection - CB Wildflower or something else?

Shimelle used Glitz' Wild and Free. You could choose any collection you wanted or even a selection of papers from your stash. I chose CB Wildflower because I loved it but was having a hard time using it.

I normally don't pay much attention to the papers and embellishments used in classes. I've always been able to overlook that and make a class work with the stuff I choose. But for some reason, i didn't feel a connection to the material she did in that class. And I've taken a ton of her classes. I'm not sure what changed with that class.

I think this might be because Shimelle said Wild and Free wasn't the sort of collection she usually went with, but she was trying to work outside of her own comfort zone. A lot of people really didn't like that collection or found it difficult to use...I think her layouts were generally fine, not my favourites, but that was only due to the product.

I took Perfect Collection and loved it. Took the ideas from it and used them right away. To me, this class is timeless and wonderful.
In Return, I just couldn't get past the collection she used. I didn't even finish watching the videos. Maybe I missed something, but it didn't really seem like an extension of the original class. It seemed more like her usual videos.

impearia, I love your layouts! I bought quite a bit of paper from that Wildflower collection because I just loved the look of it (and the texture!), but haven't even cut into any of it yet- I really need to use it! I never took The Perfect Collection, but have tried on my own to construct layouts in that manner, and it just didn't work for me. Maybe I need to take the actual class to change my 'mind-set' about working 'page first' rather than 'photo first'?? I think when I first read about Return to the Collection I thought it sounded like it might be better, because of the more 'theory' rather than 'project' based approach... I'll have to look at it again, I think.

Thanks crimsoncat05, I really LOVED that collection it felt so different and modern to me. I went back and counted, I did 6 layouts (including a double page, so 7 pages total with it). I especially loved the photo realistic strip paper. I loved it so much I bought an extra piece and I am hoarding it since i used up almost an entire piece making my other layouts. I am like you, I can't construct a page without thinking about the photo; I just cannot do it! So the Perfect Collection class, while cool, wasn't a great fit for me. While Return to the Collection was perfect. You really do have to be able to get past the Glitz Wild and Free papers though, as some people mentioned they can be a bit distracting, cause boy are they LOUD. I give Shimelle credit though, for using something outside her comfort zone. Try the class, I am bet you would like it.

Crimsoncat - I cut the paper as suggested and then picked photos and then did the layouts. It was just very handy having all the papers cut already and then being able to quickly try them out. Usually I cringe before I cut.
I did it with a 6x6 pad and just adjusted the measurements accordingly. It went super fast and I liked the finished mini album I made.

I feel like "The Perfect Collection" and "Return to the Collection" aren't really necessary anymore; when "The Perfect Collection" came out, it was when scrapbook videos were mainly a TwoPeas thing, but recently there has been an explosion of YouTube videos showing people's process and a majority of them are using kits so you can get much of the same information (be it less instructional) for free now. I took Return to the Collection" mostly because Shimelle always inspires me, just looking at her layouts and seeing how they come together alone, but I feel like beyond her design being beautiful, it didn't really convey it's purpose, I felt like it was valuable for THAT collection kit, but not as helpful in general.

Thank you so much mamakven. iammikki you are right to an extent...nowadays you can find loads of free process videos on You Tube, so many people are doing them just because they enjoy it and to help inspire others. I do wonder sometimes about the future of online classes because why pay when you can get things for free. I have only paid to take classes from Shimelle and Wilna though, so I am not sure. wilna always gives loads of cut files though, which to be helps make her classes worth the price.

I think that you pay for personality, expertise, innovation and insight, like a complete bundle. How many of the process videos out there now offer much of that? I love them, don't get me wrong. To me, they are awesome company while I'm scrapping, but very few offer much in the way of what I am willing to pay for, do you know what I mean?
And, just an aside, I don't think of the process videos as a scrapbooking thing only, I think of it is a Youtube thing. It seems like Youtube is the new American past-time. Everyone with a video camera wants to post videos (okay, not everyone, but a lot. LOL). I love all kinds of Youtube videos. But, just because I like watching process videos doesn't mean that I'll give up paying for innovative classes by an enthusiastic teachers.

meganliane,
I took both classes and loved both of them, for different reasons. In the Perfect Collection, Shimelle cut-up a collection pack of papers and arranged the cuts as starting points for layouts. The point was to randomly cut-up paper in order to use one's stash. I made all of the layouts and even added a few extras. She did provide a cutting diagram which I have found very useful.
In Return to the Collection, her focus was to use a collection pack that she ordinarily would not use but wanted to put to good use and see what she could do with it. The paper collection, Wild and Free by Glitz, was not one I would have looked at twice, but I bought it on-line for half price and made the exact layouts that Shimelle made. She had some good tricks and hints that I found useful, and after I made all the pages, they looked pretty good, so I used them for my daughter's surprise 40th birthday party. I also felt very happy with myself that I could use an entire collection pack.
One of the main reasons I will pay for Shimelle's classes/videos is that she does a great job of filming and speaking. She usually scraps upside down, so there are not distracting hands, bodies, etc. in the viewing area. She also always provides the names of the paper and embellishments she uses. Shimelle has many free videos on Youtube including 4x6 Photo Love(one of my absolute favs), the Glitter Girl series, and tons of others. Check 'em out.
I do watch some other process Youtube videos, but one of the most popular scrappers drives me crazy with using "um, um, um" constantly plus she never gives the names of the paper/embellies she is using. Another one usually has a phone ringing, hands in the way, wasting time trying to find something.
Hope this review helps.

jamh I have to agree with your review of Shimelle's videos. She is my favourite process video scrapper because she is SO well spoken, clear and she often scraps in real time which is amazing. She explains it all as it happens! I also enjoy Wilna F. for basically the same reasons. I love that people do process videos for free because they love them and some are great, but I still think Shimelle's are my favourite. I miss her regular videos so much!

imperia,
While waiting for Shimelle's return, I have been re-watching some of her classes. Your layouts using the Carta Bella Wildflower collection are so awesome that I have ordered that collection to use with the Return to the Collection class. I also accidently found some of your layouts over at Scrapbook.com that I am in the process of copying.
Thanks for sharing. I so miss that huge gallery that we had at TPs(scrapbook.com is a close second).

See, I LOVED that class. The Perfect Collection was okay too, but it was more a single idea adapted from the old idea of speed scrapping with cutting guides. I thought Return had more to it, more techniques and ideas. Even if I didn't love all of Shimelle's layouts the concepts worked well, I thought. I made a bunch of layouts using Carta Bella's Wildflower collection (6, I think even a double page which I NEVER do anymore!) and I LOVE them all and I found myself really using up the whole collection. In fact, I sort of want to do it again with another collection. Here are a few of examples of layouts I made with the class: Beautiful layouts!

I do like SB.com and usually post all my layouts there, but honestly, I feel ignored there. I don't get much layout love on SB.com, a lot of my layouts don't get a single comment, so it makes me happy you found them there and are enjoying them! I would love to see what you come up with! Be sure to share them when you finish. scrapnatya Thanks Marianne! I need to check on the March Scrapbusters challenges! Thanks LavenderLayoutLady and nylene you know I always love your pages too! Your Disney album is amazing!
