I love the show "The Middle." I was reading some random article about it online, and there was a part where the author said the character of Axel was unrealistic because teenaged boys wouldn't be caught dead walking around the house in their underwear like Axel does. Before I read that, I just assumed that was an accurate portrayal of what it's like to live with a sloppy teenager. So my question - is this normal behavior based on your experience?

As the older sister of what used to be a teenage boy, he spent a lot of time in his bathrobe. He never walked around in his boxers. But he is an introverted personality, maybe that plays into it?

Not my oldest 2, but my 3rd would, but only his boxer-briefs, not his regular boxers. Maybe because at that point, my dh would also walk around in his own boxer-briefs, which he didn't do when the others were teens?

My son is 13. Almost everyday, he comes home, takes off his pants and sits down to the computer. He walks around in boxers and a t-shirt all the time. To be fair, he gets this from his father who is the same way.

Mine don't. The may take their shirts off every once in a while while they are wearing athletic shorts- but no boxers. Everything else about Axel works for me, but not the boxers.

No. DS15 would never do that. He also would never qualify for the stereotype of "sloppy teenager" either.

My 18 year old is very modest. That doesn't happen here. But none of the rest of us do that either.

IMO, the answer depends more on the entire family's unconscious messages about nudity and varying levels of undress. If the boy's family accepts walking around in your underwear as appropriate then they will likely do it.
My dd would have heckled her younger brothers to no end so they were much more likely to dress just to keep out of her teasing.

My son is only 11, but has been doing this since he was in pull-ups. I don't see him ever changing. My DH doesn't and never did.

Two sons, now 25 and 23, never went around in their underwear after about age 7 or 8. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do it now either. Also, husband has never walked around in his underwear.

I will one up that. Mine is a senior and played football so he has a lot of compression shorts. He comes home many days and strips down to just those. It is just the three of us. He has no qualms walking through the house on the way to the bathroom in just those. He will stay in his room doing homework, watching videos or playing games in just those. What can I say? His dad is a Floridian and would rather not wear too many clothes.

My 15 year old would if I allowed him to.
As far as being an accurate depiction of a teenage boy, Axl is the reason I fell in love with the show because his attitude is my son 110%!!!

Four boys here, none of whom wander/wandered around the house in their boxers. DH doesn't, either.

My DS is 16 and does not. He might make a run to the laundry room in his boxer briefs, but that's about it.

I'm not a fan of that show (that's an understatement - I hate that show), but aren't the kids supposed to be REALLY socially awkward and weird? So what a normal teenager would do, they would probably do the opposite?

Mine would not be caught dead anywhere in his underwear. Ever. He wears something over his under wear under his band uniform so he doesn't have to be in his underwear in the boys band room. The only place he is in his underwear out side of his room or the bathroom, is in the PE locker room and only because he'd get teased if he made an issue of it.
I'm sure there's a kid out there who does that, but not one that I know of.

I have a 13 year old boy and he doesn't. Wouldn't be caught without pants/shorts on. My husband doesn't either.

No. But then DH would never walk around in his underwear either so maybe that factors in?

My brother as a teen would have died first, my oldest child is 12 years old and would do this year round if he could (same with his 9-year-old brother).

Yeah, back in the days of Axe and hair gel I'd say DS did. Charlie Mc Dermott who plays the role of Axyl is a local guy, he is a year older than my son, so he's 24. Maybe it is a regional thing. They went to the same high school, and we belonged to the gym his parents owned. Such a nice family.

DS (16) will change into athletic shorts when he gets home and, if it is really hot might take off his shirt, but has never hung around the house just in his boxers and neither has DH.

Mom of 3 boys who were teens - Never in boxers, but two of the three were shirtless in gym shorts frequently. The other in sweats or pj bottoms. Always.

Ds, 17, doesn't routinely walk around the house in his boxers. But if he's going through the house to the basement to get clothes, he's not shy about doing so in his underwear, and might stop to chat for a moment.
