This is quite interesting. I was thinking of making cherry jam since prices are so good right now but was not looking forward to the pitting process. This makes it pretty easy. I tried it with some Ranier Cherries and it worked great.

I would definitely recommend a gadget of some sort.After watching some YouTube videos, I opted for the straw method. A regular straw won't work. Needed one from a Tervis type cup. It worked well (even after I broke it in 1/2() oh well, DH wanted a cherry pie & by golly he got one!

I love that one that pits 6 at once! I had trouble finding a cherry pitter that was less than $40 locally and that trick with the paper clip didn't work for me. After some trial and error, I ended up using a small funnel to pit the 10 lbs of cherries waiting for their vodka bath.  I had a nesting set of funnels and found that the smallest one worked great when I used the funnel part to push out the pit. My fingers got stained, but it was a quick process once I figured it out. |

I've never made anything that required my cherries to be pitted. I just eat them. The paperclip method looks simple but a little messy. I think if I was going to pit cherries I'd rather the 6 cherry pitting tool.

I have this one and love it!  Eta: it is easier to pit cherries if you get them cold and firm in a bowl of ice water before you pit them. |

I never heard of using a paper clip. I have an old fashioned pitter, similar to that OXO one but with less bells & whistles. I'd love a way to make it neater. Some of the other gadgets show here look cool. |

When using a paperclip, make sure that it isn't a cheap one, but a sturdy one. Unfold so there are shepherd hooks at each end. Easy to do. Having the cherries chilled does make it easier.

With the paperclip you would definitely need gloves!! I suppose if you were just doing a small amount this would be a good method. I'm always wondering if I really DO need another kitchen gadget but those pitters look like nifty little gadgets.
