My 15 yr old mentioned to me last week that he feels a small lump on his testicle. I immediately took him to his dr and she sent him for an ultrasound. The result shows a hydrocele. It is small but the dr wants him to go to a urologist to get it drained. The nurse was sharing that it is seen in infants alot. Does anypea have experience with this in an older boy? I am pretty sure that a needle will be involved and my son is quite nervous. Is the procedure painful?? Ugh

Yes, I have. My story is a bit different Several years ago my son and his friend were screwing around and his friend dropped a round weight on my son in the groin area. My sons testicle swelled up. My son didn't say a word, he figured the swelling would go down. He was about 12/13 at the time. Well, a couple years later a friends son had testicular cancer and one of the symptoms was swelling of the testicle so he finally said something. It was a hydrocele he was completely knocked out. And I beleive a urologist did the surgery. He was excused from PE for a week or so and his PE teacher had a similar surgery. I don't remember him in excess pain and his testicle was pretty much open from top to bottom. There was more pain with his wisdom teeth.

Thanks for sharing. It does sound like a different situation but glad he said something to you. The dr said to me that she usually finds them during a well check up and then the boy would confess that he had it for a while.

May dh had one for years, since childhood. His one testicle could end up larger than a baseball, but as long as he wasn't in any pain (except for the skin stretching when it was bad) the dr left it alone. (Did lead to some teasing about the size of his package lol.). He finally had it repaired when he had hernia surgery, turned out he had the hernia a lot longer than we thought and it was actually the the cause.

My BFF neighbor's son had one drained last summer. He was 17. They watched it for a year or so before draining it. He had to take it easy - no sports - for two weeks, but no problems after.
It's great that your DS talked to you about this. Good luck!

My DH has a hydrocele and hernia repaired back in 2009. He was in his late sixties when it happened. He had complications with his b/p and internal bleeding. When he was scheduled for prostate surgery two years ago, he couldn't have it because the mesh used to repair the hernia had caused severe scar tissue to develop all around his organs. We are still dealing with problems today. Good luck to you with your son.

DH has one. They didn't do surgery, but did feel that it led to a low sperm count and low motility. We ended up doing IUI with DS, but DD came all on her own. I've been pregnant at least 4 times, with only one pregnancy due to IUI. I guess that jump started things in my body.

My exH had it when he was in high school (we were together at the time and I was the one who discovered it). Maybe it was small because his doctor didn't do anything about it and he ended up having 3 or 4 kids after we split so fertility wasn't an issue for him either. Seems to be pretty common though, no reason to think your son won't have anything but a full recovery from it
