My 16 year old ds is trying to lose weight and I am having problems finding meals that will fill him up. It doesn't help that he is somewhat picky and doesn't love to eat lots of veggies. He will eat them but not a plate full.
If you have any recipes for low calorie but filling meals, I would love to see them. I did go on Pinterest and found some that I think will be good but I thought I would see if you had tried and true ones.

Would he eat a chopped type salad? I find those more interesting and palatable than a regular bowl of tossed greens.
Also, beans. They're high-fiber and filling, and have lots of protein. But they're low-fat and therefore a lot leaner than most meats.

Would he eat turkey chili? Lean ground turkey is way lower in calories than ground beef. I make turkey chili all the time and with the ground turkey and beans it is pretty filling.
Stir fry with chicken breast, lots of veggies. I can make a stirfry with 4 oz. of chicken and the rest veggies and my plate is full. I only put broccoli, snap peas and pepper strips in mine. I'm sure a 16 year old boy could have 5 or 6 oz. of chicken.

I will try a chopped salad. That is a good idea. He doesn't enjoy a big serving of salad but I think you might be right that a chopped salad might be better. Thanks!

I recently consulted a nutritionist and started counting macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates). It's a little work to plan ahead, but I really feel good and I'm eating more than I have in a while and still loosing weight. Many of us have damaged our metabolisms by focusing on low calories...your body eventually adjusts to the decreased energy going in. It might not be something you two want to investigate, but I just thought I would mention it because it's working for me.

I'd also second the looking at something beyond calories. A 16 year old boy can eat a lot of calories and still lose weight. I would focus on feeding him lean proteins, whole grains, and vegetables, but as much as he wants of those, that's the basis for a healthy diet. I sometimes follow the Weight Watchers "Simply Filling" technique, and you get unlimited fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, lean beef, beans, whole grains like brown rice, Quinoa, cheerios, and skim milk among other things.

I am following the advocare diet and there are lots of recipes you can find that are would be good. I know there is a bunch on pintrest.
Just a note I am not selling the Advocare products just saying there is lots of great recipes you could use. My favorite is the turkey chili. They use a lot of mRs Dash low sodium seasonings. The recipes are very filling and low cal.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will consider each of them. I agree that counting calories is probably not the best thing for him to do for the long haul. It has been educational for him to learn about it though. He has been shocked at how much junk he consumed before he decided to make this change.

I think that if he/you focus on healthy food and remove processed stuff he would see great results fast.
Also encourage drinking water with or without lemon.
One of my hard fast rules for losing weight is not drinking any calories. I drink green tea or water. I can't remember the last time I drank a soda.

Get him set up on My Fitness Pal and make sure he's seen a nutritionist. Damaging his metabolism at this age could be totally inadvertent and is completely preventable and not difficult. Plus it will give him some responsibility in this which will help a lot, for both of you.

While MFP is a calorie count bring app, it will make him more aware of the macros he needs. Too many people are eating way way more sugar and simple carbohydrates these days than is healthy and the "low cal" foods many times just add to it if not selected correctly.
