My mama turns 90 years old this year which of course requires a big party! Her birthday actually falls on a Sunday so I asked her if she'd like a drop-in that afternoon... to which she replied, "Punch and cookies? How boring!" So now we have a hotel space reserved for Saturday night. We also have a musician as well as back up DJ music taken care of as well. This is the cake she selected and it's already ordered so we are going with the lavender and lime green color scheme. I am in contact with a caterer to do heavy hors d-oeuvres. And we will have beer, wine, and soft drinks. I'm gathering photographs to do a display but would welcome ideas for "how." So... what else? I think we'll do a candy bar with the color scheme if anyone has a good source to order candies. Shoot me some ideas for decor, centerpieces, and so forth. I'd like to do something a little over-the-top and memorable.

Happy Birthday to your mom! Candies the same color, I'd probably start with ordering M&Ms. They have lots of colors and you can even put Happy Birthday or 90 or something special to you both on them. For pictures, not knowing how much time you have, I might do a shutterfly photo book with lots of white space in it so your guests can write her special notes maybe even about the picture. Maybe even adding a few blank pages to the end to add pictures from the birthday party. Have lots of fun and good luck!

What about using pictures of her at different decades in her life for table centerpieces? 20s, 30s, 40s etc teen years, elementary years and baby years. We recently went to a party where they did this. The had the pictures on wires in with the flowers. There were printouts of popular news stories, what stuff cost and popular movies, actors etc printed to look like newspapers on every table. It was cute.

You can actually buy lavender soda. Lavender scones are delicious. Great idea and beautiful cake! I feel candy bars and just for visuals and not touched much by people. I would do a projection screen with pics and explain a few to people along with a prepared speech of stories about your mom. Curious what is your mom's bedtime?

You can order all sorts of candies from nutsonline.com. I've ordered from them before - excellent service and really fast!

Later than mine most nights! Lol. She's doing pretty well for her age. She has no stamina at all, but goes anyway. She has her own apartment, still drives well, meets friends several times a week for meals/shows/playing Bridge, and rarely misses any of my youngest son's soccer games. I'm hoping I got her genes!
I love the idea of the lavender soda and scones!
Also think the idea of doing the photos by decades is neat -- combined with facts about what was going on in the world then. The Shutterfly book is a good idea for people to write in, too. And I like the idea of a projection screen --- in fact, the room has a large-screen TV mounted on one wall so we could probably play a continuous loop of photos!
The photo backdrop or booth is a must. Can't believe I didn't have that on the list already.
And thanks for the recommendation of nutsonline.com. Looks like they have a lot I could use.

Beautiful cake!
I love candy bars at parties. Check out OldTimeCandy.com. I went to a 60th birthday party recently, and they had a lot of retro candy that the guest of honor had enjoyed growing up.

I ordered the printed m&m's for a color themed party. Also ordered a bunch of unprinted I es in the same colors. The Mars website was quick and the customer service was excellent. If you want to go that way keep your eye out they have sales from time to time.
The rest of the candy for the candy bar we got from SAMs and Costco and a little specialty candy store here, and candywarehouse.com Also I collected Easter Hersheys minis and Easter wrapped mini reeses, as they had my colors ( light blue & lime green ) for a may party. Worked out well because I got those 1/2 off and I had no problem Finding someone to at the other colirs lol.
We got the little colorful paper bags from michaels for the candy bar ( for guests to put their candy in )
For green candy we could buy without having to buy specialty packages I found green apple twizzlers, green star light mints, those green minty leaves, green laffy taffy, Andes mints and green green rock candy sticks and green ribbon candy from party store.
Special dark Hersheys kisses come wrapped in dark purple. And twizzlers come grape.
Happy birthday to your mom!!

Lavender macarons! :-) I think there is a lavender lemonade and I've seen lavender infused honey. I've also had a cocktail called a Marie Antoinette that had a sprig of lavender in it.

I second the oldtimecandy.com website, I've ordered from them before and was pleased with them. Another place you could check would be Party City if you have one in your area, they have a lot of single color candies in bulk packages for wedding favors in a lot of colors. The photo booth would be fun with props from different decades for guests at the party to use. My friend had a photo booth for her DD's wedding, and everyone who came was encouraged to make a scrapbook page with the printed photos. The only thing they should have done differently would have been to get all of the photos that were taken during the event saved onto a CD or DVD for the bride and groom. The photos were taken with a laptop camera so it should have been a no brainer, but the person doing it was a friend of the family and didn't think of it. The cake you posted is beautiful! I hope your mom has a great birthday and that the event is a huge success.

I really like the idea mentioned above sharing what things cost "way back when" (you could use her birth year). My Grandma turns 96 this June and I love hearing about what the movies, gas and a loaf of bread cost in the 1920s. I recently made a photo banner for my SIL's surprise 40th birthday. I mounted each photo (I made copies) on various patterned cardstock and clipped them all onto a long twine with clothespins. Scattered throughout the line were little chalkboard clips with the years, so people could keep up. We hung it at the restaurant and it was a huge focal point. Everyone kept getting up to look (the older pics are the most popular!) I also made a VERY large sign-in board (I mounted it via my professional lab). It was displayed on an easel near the gift table and all of the guests signed. It makes a nice keepsake (and we featured a cute photo in it's center). Pretty cake! HB to your Mom.

Thank you all for so many good ideas. I like the idea of using photo props that reflect her history -- that could be fun! And to have some ideas of where to shop for the colors of candy is very helpful.

How absolutely wonderful! I have no clever advice but am voting this thread my feelgood moment of the day. Will we get to see some pictures? Hope so. Enjoy the planning and the occasion, of course. Many happy returns of the day to your Mom.

It went great! We had about 140 people in attendance and she received so many cards & letters from ones who couldn't attend. The caterer did a fabulous job and everyone raved over the food -- pork tenderloin, beef tenderloin, big shrimp with two different dipping sauces, cheese & fruit trays, veggies, hot dips, and more. She did a lavender-infused lemonade, too, similar to what was suggested above. A local beer & wine boutique provided numerous choices of each and he took back unopened cases for credit which was nice. The bartender was kept busy! Oh, and the cake turned out just like the photo -- we were happy with that. The candy bar was a big hit as well. We had ten choices of candies mostly all in the party's color scheme in gorgeous glass containers and I found little clear scoops to put in them. One of my cousins did a beautiful display of the bags to fill. In addition to the take-home of the candies, we had handmade lavender soaps. Again, my cousin wrapped those and had them beautifully displayed. I had made a custom order of the soap through a woman on Ebay and had it mailed directly to my cousin. She got it all ready and brought it with her to the party. We decorated with swags of purple satin-like fabric behind the food tables, swagged from the sconces in the room, and used as tablecloths on the candy tables. Over those was swagged fishing line that I had hot-glued pom-poms to in the party colors so they looked like the were floating. I enlisted my son in the Navy to help with that (he had a week's leave before the party) and he was so excited to be doing a "craft project." Lol. I hired a local couple who do Karaoke and live performance to do the bulk of the entertainment. They were accompnaied by another cousin's husband who has his own band. He brought his guitar and amp to plug in with them. That was great! They kept everyone up dancing. My mama and I danced to "Dance With My Father" and then my four sons came and joined us. It was really sweet. We also had a bagpiper! Yet another cousin has a next-door-neighbor who plays bagpipes. He came and played "Happy Birthday" on the bagpipes. Because really what birthday is complete without a bagpiper? We partied long into the night. My mama had a ball which was exactly the goal of the party. So many of her friends in attendance said that night - and have said since - that they haven't attended a party like that in years and couldn't remember when they'd had that much fun. And here's the birthday girl singing Karaoke at her party. This is my mama and me with my four cousins (small family!) I'm third from the left. And this is an idea of how we decorated.

And here's me with my sons and my husband. The youngest kept making faces and wouldn't "pose." Oh well. You make weird faces then that's how you'll look for all eternity in the pictures. Lol!

annabella - at my Grandma's 90th we requested that in lieu of gifts, everyone/every family bring a single flower to create a bouquet for her. Many people still brought gifts but she got so many flowers and was so pleased with them. I also sent a birthday request to the White House and she received a card from the President and First Lady (obviously a generic one but embossed with the seal, etc.). She thought that was pretty neat.

What about doing some sort of photo station or back drop along with photo props? You could have a cut out of her face on a stick. People could use it in a photo booth. Trivia facts about the birthday girl is fun. When my Mom turned 75 we did a bus tour of her life. It was a lot of fun, we drove by all the places she had lived and worked. We got drive through from her favorite burger place as a kid. She grew up in an affluent house in a neighborhood that was being re-gentrified and it happened to be on the market so we had a big stop there and she and her siblings took us all through the house (it was a huge house that her parents built in 1913) and talked about what it was like to live there. We recreated a photo of her and siblings from when they were young all sitting on the steps at the front of the house. It is one of my favorite pictures. Thought this might jog some ideas for you! Just read the whole thread! LOL... sounds like a fabulous party the pictures are gorgeous!!!
