My 12yr old DD asked if she could make my 10yr old's birthday cake next month. She wants to make this one. She's says, "It'll be so easy!" LOL! Apparently the dripping wax is colored butter cream. My kitchen would never be the same.

Let her try, but if you can, have her practice first. She'll need to figure out how to handle the butter cream and what thickness it needs to be. It's going to be thinner than standard so it will be harder to work with. Practice is going to be the difference between a cake she'll be proud to share and a disaster. You might also want to ask her if she's ok with the base color being white. Black frosting has to be pre-purchased because it's almost impossible to get a true black at home. A white base would look pretty as well and it would be very easy for her. You might also gently suggest a pastel color scheme because those are easier to get with frosting at home. If you do go with brights, buy her some professional gel colors at a restaurant supply or craft store and don't expect to get a true red either.
Do try to make the frosting at home. It's so much easier to work with than the pre canned stuff. This is my recipe: 2 lbs of powdered sugar 1 cup salted butter (I like the little bit of salt in the frosting) 1/2 cup whipping cream 1 T vanilla
This will make quite a bit of frosting. Feel free to cut the recipe in half. it works best if you mix half the powdered sugar with the rest of the ingredients and then slowly work in the rest of the powdered sugar as you beat (don't add it with the mixer running or you'll make a huge powdered sugar dust cloud.) You can adjust the sugar to get the consistency you need for decorating. If you have a stand mixer that works best. I find that American butter cream tastes best when I whip the holy heck out of it. It gives the cornstarch in the powdered sugar time to dissolve so it doesn't have that weird raw flavor.
good luck and have fun!

Where will you find all of those sizes and shapes of candles???
If it happens, you need to post a photo.

Wouldn't that taste better than a black frosting?

I say give it a whirl. You will not ever learn, if you don't try.

My mom did the Wilton classes when my brother and I were very young, and she made beautiful character cakes for our birthdays.
Then we moved to an area without a cake shop where you rent the character cake pans and accessories and get specialty ingredients.
I started baking and cooking as soon I could stand on a pulled out drawer to reach the countertop. My mom taught me how to do the basic Wilton techniques--not hard at all, just need practice.
I say let her do it. By 12 I was baking cakes and other desserts for friends and neighbors, including cleaning up the kitchen afterwards.
I've even done tiered cakes for different events and loved every minute of it. Cake decorating skills can be a good way for your dd to earn money as a teen or even later in life. I would do fancy cakes for extra income if my health permitted it.
*I also think that the cake pictured would be best made with a dark chocolate frosting instead of black. Black tastes nasty. Personally, I'd make a frosting from melted and cooled unsweetened baking chocolate, like Baker's.

Looks can be deceiving - I bet it is far from easy to make! LOL - but it will be fun. Get the good gel colors. I get mine at Hobby Lobby. Regular grocery store colors will not work. Do share a picture of the finished project - you may have the next Cake Boss!

Standard buttercream is a pound of butter to four pounds of powered sugar. Add vanilla , add WATER until the sugar looses up and looks like frosting. It will not take much. I would make at least 3 pounds of frosting. You can freeze what you don't use. If you use milk ,the cake needs to be refrigerated.
Add cocoa powder for chocolate frosting.
To make the runny parts thin the frosting out with water not so much that you can't use it.
Each if the colors are put on with thicker frosting first. Divide the top of cake up into however many wedges you want. It would be easier to pipe the colors on than to try and spread them on.
Use a small round tip to pipe on the drips.

I like the idea of using dark chocolate frosting! Yum! That would be so much better. Don't mind us. We'll just sit here and tell your dd how to do it.

That's a cool cake. I don't think it would be that hard to replicate. It would be very cool to have colored cake layer inside too. I would also use chocolate ganache instead of the black buttercream on the outside. If she does choose to make black buttercream, I would recommend purchasing a large bottle of Super Black by Americolor as she'll need a lot to make true black. There are only 5 other colors on top which she can pipe with a round tip, or even just a piping bag or ziplock with the end cut off. I think the real difficulty will be finding all the different kinds of candles:) I'm sure your daughter will have lots of fun making this cake!

Ooooh, I LOVE that cake, it's fabulous!! And thanks for all the tips perumbula. I'd love to try something like this one day, but I think I'd stick with white (even though the black looks amazing).
